Revelation
Chapter 9

+     Text Size

1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.

10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Commentary for Revelation 9

The fifth trumpet is followed by a representation of another star as falling from heaven and opening the bottomless pit, out of which come swarms of locusts. (1-12) The sixth trumpet is followed by the loosing of four angels bound in the great river Euphrates. (13-21)1-12 Upon sounding the fifth trumpet, a star fell from heaven to the earth. Having ceased to be a minister of Christ, he who is represented by this star becomes the minister of the devil; and lets loose the powers of hell against the churches of Christ. On the opening of the bottomless pit, there arose a great smoke. The devil carries on his designs by blinding the eyes of men, by putting out light and knowledge, and promoting ignorance and error. Out of this smoke there came a swarm of locusts, emblems of the devil's agents, who promote superstition, idolatry, error, and cruelty. The trees and the grass, the true believers, whether young or more advanced, should be untouched. But a secret poison and infection in the soul, should rob many others of purity, and afterwards of peace. The locusts had no power to hurt those who had the seal of God. God's all-powerful, distinguishing grace will keep his people from total and final apostacy. The power is limited to a short season; but it would be very sharp. In such events the faithful share the common calamity, but from the pestilence of error they might and would be safe. We collect from Scripture, that such errors were to try and prove the Christians, #1Co 11:19|. And early writers plainly refer this to the first great host of corrupters who overspread the Christian church.

13-21 The sixth angel sounded, and here the power of the Turks seems the subject. Their time is limited. They not only slew in war, but brought a poisonous and ruinous religion. The antichristian generation repented not under these dreadful judgments. From this sixth trumpet learn that God can make one enemy of the church a scourge and a plague to another. The idolatry in the remains of the eastern church and elsewhere, and the sins of professed Christians, render this prophecy and its fulfilment more wonderful. And the attentive reader of Scripture and history, may find his faith and hope strengthened by events, which in other respects fill his heart with anguish and his eyes with tears, while he sees that men who escape these plagues, repent not of their evil works, but go on with idolatries, wickedness, and cruelty, till wrath comes upon them to the utmost.

Discussion for Revelation 9

I have a question concerning musical instruments in our worship today.. I have read and study one view on this and it is something that I have never studied before and had never even heard in all of my church going years. There are those who believe that instrumental music is not authorized for the New Testament worship of God today. I have read all the scriptures supporting this but it has come from one source. What is your commentary on this subject and do you have scripture to validate your stand? I have read the new Testament and have not found the use of musical instruments mention when the disciples gathered to worship. How did it come to be acceptable in our worship services if it was not authorized by God for his worship to him according to the gospel of Jesus? I would just like to hear another view on this subject but know that we are worship God in spirit and in truth. We are to do the will of God, and not what is pleasing to us. When we gather together for worship we are to worship according to His purpose and by his authority, according to the New Testament. The Israelites were commanded to worship with music in the Old Testament, but no mention of instruments were mentioned in the new Testament.

Hello, there's nothing in the Bible saying to not use a musical instrument, but it does say the opposite. David played the harp: 1 Samuel 16:23

Psalm 150:3-4 - Says to worship with trumpet, harp, psalms, timbrell, stringed instruments, organ.

Instruments will be in heaven too- harps. Rev 15:2-3

It says worship in spirit and truth: John 4:23.

Playing an instrument is like serving and sometimes is hard to focus on worshipping God. But the same thing can happen if you're the leader singing, or if you're in audience reading notes or spacing out. So, I think there's a case for each where we need to make sure its done in spirit and truth and done to glorify God, not ourselves or some other purpose. God bless...

And you are right there is no little sin or big sin. The bible say in Romans 6 : 23. "That the wages of sin is death and the gift of God is eternal life". So how ever you wage it if you sin it is sin their is no sugar coating it, or to say it is a white lie it is still sin and sin can lead to death...

Who was given the key to the bottomless pit
  • Jesse - in Reply on Revelation 9
    B COLE,

Revelation 9:1 tells us that when the fifth angel sounded, a star fell. In Revelation Chapter 1, we know that the stars represent angels. So a star fell from heaven. Secondly, the word fall is in the Perfect Tense. So he sees a star which has already fallen. He didn't see it as it was falling. He saw a fallen star, a star that had already fallen from out of heaven unto the earth.

And to this angel, this fallen star, was given the key to the bottomless pit. Notice that it was given to him. He did not possess it. He did not have authority over it. We know from Revelation Chapter 1 that Jesus has the keys of Hades and of death. The Lord holds all the keys to all of these places.

Now the bottomless pit is the word abyss, ABUSSO in Greek. And it is interesting because it is believed that around where Babylon used to be, and in fact, it was the place where Saddam Hussein was caught, but they believed that there is a shaft that goes down into the heart of the earth. And this shaft is closed up on the top.

And this would be the place that Peter told us about in 2 Peter Chapter 2:4, that there are angels who are reserved in chains of darkness, ready to be revealed.

And so this star who had fallen was given the key to the bottomless pit. This star is none other than Satan himself, and the creatures that will be released from this pit are going to be two-hundred million demons unleashed upon the earth.

But concerning this star who had been fallen, back in Isaiah 14:12-15, we have recorded for us the rebellion of Satan. It is called the "five I wills," where Satan said I will be like the most high, where he expressed his rebellion towards God.

And it is at that time that he lost his first domain. He lost his first position with God.

Well, having read everything that takes me back in 2014 when I had a revelation and I asked myself for years what it really met and why would God show me something so poeerf like that,me,a tiny young woman of 25years by that time

I found myself in an endless garden ,it had fruits ripened and attractive, it had homosexuals, it had bars, clubs swiiming pools every luxurious place was in that beautiful garden ,people happy dancing, others smoking ,drinking having sex in broad day light,i admired to go that side and enjoy too.

As I made a step,I heard voices I looked up,i saw 3 angels only faces were human the rest was covered in white garments in a white cloud one was Michael the leader ,but he was very angry the voice told commanders them, Go down in the garden, wipe away anything that is contaminated, any one that has eaten of that fruit of poison not even a small grass will u leave as long as it's contaminated.

I saw them destroying that side I desired to go to,nothin was left except there's was a fruit dome near me and I wanted to bend pick it eat it,but one angel said to Michael, Look back, someone is getting contaminated, Go destroy her,I never picked it,he flew back up,I woke up.

For long time,it disturbed me,it's here in 2020,I see that revelation happening and it's powerful.lets pray and turn away from evil go.the days are dark and we need to be pure when that angel of death comes to take

It is said that man was created in the likeness of God. I believe God is a tribune God. Man is created in Flesh and Spirit/Soul. Which is the third part?
  • Chris - in Reply on Revelation 9:18
Thapelo, indeed Gen 1:26,27 says that we were made in the Image of God. That is, His only Creation that received a spirit, able to reason at a higher level, to articulate in words what is in his heart, having "set the World in their hearts" (Eccl 3:11) which means, we have the privilege of understanding so much of God's Creation so our worship might be returned to Him. No other living creature has these divine qualities, yet no other creature has done the evil that man has done to God's World.

So, you believe correctly, that God is a Triune God: Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit. Likewise, man was created in three parts: Body, Soul & Spirit. The Body signifies the outer structure/form; the Soul is the life given to the Body ("& man became a living soul" (Gen 2:7); the Spirit is by which we are able to function above animals, whether in our minds, in morality, discernment, speaking to our Creator or allowing Him to speak to us, etc. Animals don't have a spirit; when we die, "our spirits shall return to the Lord Who gave it" (Eccl 12:7); of course, many of those departed ones will not enter Heaven because of their treatment of God's Son & His Sacrifice for their sins. We hope that your heart & life has been wonderfully changed by God's Spirit & you daily enjoy the Triune God working in your life & giving you His Grace.
