The passage could have had a literal interpretation, but it definitely has a spiritual one. It can be a literal death, or the 'death to self' people speak about, or both. The time period is indefinite. It is the spirit in prison and not the bars of a cell. I write from the midst of the over 20 year experience. It is systematic and relentless persecution that closely parallels the book of Job in affliction ways. Everything that did 'work' (gifts of the Spirit) cease to work. The relationship with God becomes like a long distance phone call. Approaching the close of the experience you don't know if the body is going to cease, nor do you care if it does. There is nothing to 'live' for in it, and eventually no desire to bother either. You feel like a squeezed out tube of toothpaste. I'm greatly abbreviating the matter and omitting the many afflictions and persecutions that brings the person to that point. It is the most cruel thing imaginable. God described it as having NO freedoms at all; and like being dead but not buried. People who have not experienced haven't a clue about what it actually means, and have not correctly explained the matter.

  • Jeremy on Revelation 2 - 10 years ago
you dont overcome by holding out. there is only one way to overcome and that is by the blood of the Lamb. Salvation is by grace through faith. the only way to be saved is to trust what Christ did for you on the cross.

Please help me to understand chapter 2,The letter to the Churches
  • Anonymous on Revelation 2 - 10 years ago
Rev 2:9 Christ is talking about the people in Israel now calling themselves Jews when they are NOT the real Jews! Because when you read Jeremiah 14:1 The Jews are black people! A Jew is a person from the tribe of Judah. So what race of people Christ is talking about in Rev 2:9? Type Jesus Christ in google and your answer is everywhere!
  • Campbell on Revelation 2 - 10 years ago
Wat is the meaning of this verse
  • George Santos on Revelation 2:9 - 10 years ago
This is the time of great poverty and oppression for the people of GOD in which all forms of blasphemy will occurring and devil forces will penetrate to the true CHURCH OF GOD and many will deceive even to the very elect but there a promise for those who remains faithful will be save.
  • Garyloyd on Revelation 2 - 10 years ago
think when you read of the churches which ones God loves completely. Smyrna is one who knew the jews that said they were jews but were not. Philly is the other. John 8:44 will tell you. Cains daddy was Satan if you seek the first murderer and that puts you to Gen. 3:15 where the controversy begins between the seeds. At the end of this book you will see that the time was shorten for the elect to 5 months and Satan comes as instead of Christ or ati-Christ and as Daniel told us with peace and flatteries. Remember Our Lord returns as a Lion with Hail Stones crushing Jerusalem because Satan is sitting playing a god. Store up your food and rent for 2 and a half months because the deeds and program of the seals haven't changed. G

No one is perfect, but Christ does allow you to repent. For it also states, "he who has an ear, let him hear what the spirits tell the churches. To Him that overcometh, I will give to eat of the Tree of Life.

My sins have left a crimson stain upon my life; I must repent and never go back to my old ways, God's word is all I will be living for, from this day forward and I truly repent of my sins and my fornications. Abba Father I truly repent in Jesus Christ name. Amen thanks Holy Spirit for never leaving me alone.
  • Mabel sungwee namukonde on Revelation 2 - 11 years ago
The last and first, the one who was slain is Jesus Christ, he is talking about the believer, the body of Christ, he is talking about the reward he will give to his own ones who will endure to the last in the race, of life. He is talking about the character of the believers, how they behave once they receive Jesus Christ himself. At first they are zealous for the Lord, then as time goes by, they turn back/look back like the wife of Lot did. As a believer we are not supposed to look back but keep on going in the things of God. For when we go back to sin, we are crucifying Jesus Christ again and again. So it better to stick to his ways of Holiness and endure in life. It is a time to forsake the ways, norms and regulations of the word and follow the precepts of God, His commandments and bear the fruits in life. Once we have Spiritual fruits and live according to his ways, we will overcome. One thing I pray is the Lord Jesus Christ to write the name of his father on my forehead, the Holy Spirit to be my friend, that I may be surrounded with the angels of the Lord Jesus Christ. I really want to rule the nations with the Lord Jesus Christ. To him, Jesus Christ the mighty ruler I give the praise and to The Holy Spirit I say: welcome in my life, and unto God Almighty: worth is the name of the Lord. God will look away from you and I if we sin, as he did to Jesus when he was on the cross. I dont want my name/your name to be left out in the book of life. Hear what the Holy Spirit is saying: take heart. Thank you.

This chapter is for everyone understanding, it is God's will. At this present time I am enjoying a study course that is really helping me to put the nuggets together and want more. Thank you for giving me the opportunity.
  • Brian on Revelation 2:11 - 11 years ago
    @Robert,
Amen, Salvation is wholly of grace. It is about the finished work of Christ, not about our ability to endure and overcome. All true Christians have already overcome!
  • Dirk on Revelation 2 - 11 years ago
Satan comes at the 6th trumpet. Christ does not come till the 7th. Do not belive Satan when he comes playing the part of Jesus.
  • His Mercy on Revelation 2 - 11 years ago
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

not all the church goers are saved there are a lot of corruptions going on in their lives some greed on moneys and some keep living in their sinning lives and this I don't understand at all because to me once you accepted Jesus Christ as your own Saviour you live in a new life and all things becomes new...I do know there is a lot of struggles to obey His Words day by day but as long as you are faithful to HIM I believe we enjoy the new life we have in Him as we follow His foot step day by day in His mighty living Word! So repent whoever you are out there before it is too late!

this is a response to first gentleman gary, I just have a thing about proper spelling and english.
no doubt pounded into me by my dear mother....weather is not proper but "whether" is. interpretations are numerous for revelations but what you say sounds very plausible. Its what the words mean to you that matters and how you choose to mold them into your life...
  • Garyloyd on Revelation 2 - 12 years ago
These seven churches are examples for us to see that 5 out of seven were failing the teaching from the get go. These 7 are in a some what circle and 7 is spiritual completeness. They still exist in their teaching and it give us an example to test the fruit of what we step into. 2 of them taught what God wanted to see and look for. Learn of the jews that say they are jews but are not. Kenites, tares, satans seed sowed. Not only that but the whole key of David. I wouldn't worry about weather God knew if 2000 years later if candle sticks exist or if the English translation is exceptable for the name of a church. Point being, 7 churches and seven angels. God wrote this Book to enlighten and Christ gave it to John to give to us to learn.

"Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols."

As the body of Christ, where are we and where is each individual? Can we confess Jesus as Christ? Can we hold faithful to His word? Can we preach the word and do good deeds?

Can the new man acknowledge and know Jesus and be faithful in preaching His word, and, yet, at the same time not have victory over the old deeds of the flesh? These deeds manifesting themselves in fornication and eating things of this world. Is every believer and the church as a whole obtaining victory over the deeds of the flesh or is a duality seen? The church preaching God's word and doing good deeds in the community, and, yet, failing to overcome the flesh nature; deeds of the flesh are seen? Are we seen as overcoming the world, or as becoming one with the deeds of the world?

Jesus says to repent of these deeds. "And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works." ( Revelation 2:2l-23)
  • Anton Lavey on Revelation 2 - 12 years ago
It's primarily allegorical... but it can't be. But it is... it's so hard to resolve the Bible's internal contradictions!
  • Ruth on Revelation 2 - 12 years ago
the book of revelation speaks of things to come, is all figthening things to hear but only u were on satan's side. to all GODS servants be ready spread the THE GOOD NEWS to very one. THE TIME IS AT HAND!
  • Bootstrap Bob on Revelation 2:4 - 12 years ago
The POWER of God is the Gospel. The Gospel is
the news of His LOVE! The Church has lost it's
ability to convey His love because we have
turned from the "Spirit of love." We use "form"
instead of Spiritual "function." WE have replaced
Mercy with "machinery" We love "gilt" more than
Grace. Are we "Christ like?" We are not what we
    profess! NO? "Search the scriptures!"
  • Audrie Moss on Revelation 2 - 12 years ago
Good behavior should always be an act of worship. Resisting remptation, forgiving, serving, and loving each other are all opportunities to tangibly express our love for Jesus....not to get a star next to our name or apat on the back.
For many, love is just a word, A passing phase, a brief emotion; But love that honors Christ our Lord Responds to Him with deep devotion.
  • G.Newman on Revelation 2 - 12 years ago
Smynra/Philly these two churches teach the Key of David-them that say they are Jews and are not so what do we get out of this. Blood line. Who came from king David-Jesus so we know a true king is to sit on the throne. What did Jesus say in His first warning in Mark 13 and the scriptures tell us. Don't be decieved by a man. Don't go here or there if they tell you to follow theme even to or in a desert because its not me until the hour of temptation is over with and there is a falling away first and that son of perditon/death is on the throne playing like a god. Remember mother, father, sister, brother, will turn over there or take them to death thinking when they turn them over their turning them over to Jesus but its not.
