Re 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich. Worldly prosperity had, probably, made the church indifferent. Knowest not that thou are wretched. Because rejected by the Lord. Poor. Destitute of the true riches. Blind. Blinded by the god of this world.

Discussion for Revelation 3

Insight; the example that the Lord uses, of "like a thief in the night," is simply just that! When he sees the world sleeping carelessly and completely unprepared for what's coming... Like a thief in the night, He will break in on them and their world will be shattered and destroyed. The warning is obvious, that we keep awake spiritually, and not be lulled to sleep by the enchantments of the world

"I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead." Judgment BEGINS at the house of God: unlike what is so popularly taught among the many who wish to avoid the cross, and the scorn and persecution of the world. Revelation starts with the Lord's convictings and warnings to the Christians to live ready and to walk in truth, with the view toward the things coming on the world.

In verse 17 the Laodiceans thought they were doing good because they were materially well-off. We must put spiritual things first and not material things.
