Psalms Chapter 78 Discussion

Psalm 78. This is a Psalm of a repetitive theme within the O.T. in particular of God's longsuffering from the time of the Exodus until the time of Israel's peak (in this case; under David's leadership as per verse 70). We should be reminded of Joshua 5:14 in regard to the Angel of the Lord being on "the Lord's side".

God had established a covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15 (after initial promises in Genesis 12 and the circumcision rite in Genesis 17 setting His people apart. some 450 years before Moses and the predicted diaspora that occured in Exodus.

Verses 4 through 8 show how the children were to be taught the Word so that they would not forget the promises to their fathers and of course to worship the one true God. In the case of Ephriam; it is not clear from my study where they failed; but it is clear here that they didn't keep the covenant of God (verse 10). This could certainly be attributed to not destroying enemies as commanded. In any event; verses 11 through 55 show God finally bringing the descendants of the Exodus into the Promised land after multiple rebellions. When they were there they continued to serve false gods (v. 56-59). Thus; GOd once again brought severe judgment. In fact; verse 65-66 could mean that God destroyed "enemies" both within and without once He finally judged whatever nations are referred to here. It is clear from scripture that many died when people presumtously fought without seeking God or sin was in the camp. Verses 68-72 shows at least temporary respite with David and the tribe of Judah being chosen. This would be shortly before the dividing of Israel after Solomon's reign became complete. Ultimately all the Covenant blessings go to God's true remnant but the rest have greater judgment having known God and rejected Him.

God does not want Christians focusing on keeping the letter of the law, especially since they can not do that. They can try but if they violate one point they may as well have violated them all. If a Christian violates one point of the law then he is guilty of violating the whole law. The Lord, however, has a better way for Christians to serve Him, by seeking to believe and obey His will for our lives, which will always be in harmony with the spirit of the law if not always in harmony with the letter.

    Galatians 6

12 As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.

13 For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.

14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

Hiya Marke...Lemme give ya my thoughts on keeping the Commandments..the law etc....And you are right the commandments have to be fulfilled...But Jesus said... Luke 17 : 10 ...After you have done all the things Commanded you say we are unprofitable servants we have done that which is our duty to do...Keeping the commandments are our duty to do...But that does not make us profitable..We still just a servant.

.....We do not become profitable till we are married to Christ and bring forth fruit unto God...As Romans 7 : 4 says

......Which is the H.G. the Child of Promise...which is fruit unto God...As Jesus said unless you receive the Kingdom of God as a lil Child you will in NO WISE enter there in...As the Woman that gave birth to the manchild keeps the commandments.... Rev 12 : 17...The Manchild is the H.G. the Kingdom...Jesus said i say unto you unless you receive the kingdom as a lil Child you cannot enter ...The kingdom does not come till the Woman gives birth to the manchild which is the H.G. that Child of Promise.

...Plz note the Kingdom does not come till the Woman births the manchild the H.G....which is the results of that GOOD SEED the words of life...the contents of the book in the fathers right hand has to be opened 1st,...That BOOK BEING THE NEW COVENANT,THATS Y THEY SANG A NEW SONG...After the book was opened, then the woman gives birth making her Profitable to God...Thats when the Promise was fulfiled of the multiplication of Christ Jesus in humanity...Us Sinners are turned into the Sons of God via the words of the book the seeds of the sower the meditation of the new covenant...A birthing Covenant...I will know them ALL from the least to the greatest...An intimacy that is gonna reult in a birth of Christ in Us...the H.G. The children of Promise....Plz note the woman had kept the commandments but she still had to bring forth fruit unto God in order to be Profitable...A baby Christ...the Son of man...mankinds fruit unto God...via that good seed the WORD.

    Psalm 78:4-7.

Christians have a responsibility to train up their children to fear the Lord. Public schools cannot do that for parents because public schools by law must mostly deny or ignore God.

    Psalm 78

4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

After re-reading Psalms 78 I get the message that: God can supply all my needs. I also find value in serving the Lord God Almighty because he loves me. I don't feel sorry for those who refuse to obey or deny God and Psalms 78 identifies why Christians should desire for people to be saved but release them when they chose to say "no".

I will praise and thank the Lord every day, through Jesus, who called us by name, and through whose Love and Mercy we are saved. We each fall short every day by doing the things we are called not to do and by not doing the things we are called to do. We are to love The Lord our God with all our heart, all our strength and with everything we do. We are also to love our neighbours as ourselves. To look to God for his plan for our life's and serve him first and others second. I am thankful every day that God, through Jesus, has called me, my husband, our sons and our family members by name and who has saved us. praise God from whom all blessings flow. Thank you Lord for your love and mercy!

    Mack: How to find what God thinks of "marriage";
Type marriage into the search box above and it will give you a sampling of verses.
To narrow your search select a link from the Marriage topics on the right side of the page in the red area, example: Love and Marriage
    Hope this helps.

Mack (cont.); God made marriage for men to build their house, their family. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Marriage is friendship and loyalty and learning how to be unselfish. Marriage is so you aren't alone going through troubles; and it will also bring about trouble in the flesh. God HATES divorce, and He expects us to work through our troubles and differences by love. Marriage is GOOD!
  • A disciple on Psalms 78 - 6 years ago
Hi Mack; A Marriage is a Covenant of Love and Fidelity to be One flesh unto the LORD, and Family for Lifelong Companionship. The LORD God built the Woman out of the Man, to be a Help unto him; and upon presenting her to Adam, Adam pronounced the Law of Marriage for ever: "This now is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman for she was taken out of Man..." Joined together!

A reminder that HE backs us up when OUR backs are to the wall. All we have to do is not move away from Him, or He lets our enemies conquer us.
  • Bryan McCloud on Psalms 78 - 8 years ago
This chapter teaches me that know matter how much God does for us; we are still ungrateful. We are just like the Isarealites who murmur and complain against God after all he has done for us. Like Proverbs 27:30 states, "hell and destruction are never full, and so the eyes of men are never satisfied."
  • Annie on Psalms 78 - 8 years ago
I thank God that when I get up in the morning my life is about him and not someone else. I thank God that when I go to bed at night my life is about him and not someone else. I am fortunate to have a relationship with God that commands my attention and not someone else. I am fortunate to possess the maturity where God is my SOURCE and not someone else. God is my all not someone else. Change you.

God, of course,is All Power and merciful beyond human description. We have not and do not fully acknowledge this at every moment or day. We give in to our fleshly feelings and desires too easiy with out enough disciplne of ourselves. Praise God for His perfect intergrity, Love, and mercy. We are nothing without Him. He left the belief of Him up to each individual to choose. Choose life and live.
  • BS ANAND on Psalms 78 - 9 years ago
The chapter explains God s love on His people inspite of their dissatisfaction, disobedience and ungratefulness. But at the same time we understand His angry towards ungrateful. It is unfortunate to see the same tendency even today among the people.

It appears that we as a people are reliving the same world as in Bible days. For we are still the same people with the same behavior patterns as the Israelites that is never being satisfied with what GOD blesses us with and are not patient neither are we grateful for his presence in our life. Where is the LOVE FAITH and TRUST.
  • Michelle on Psalms 78 - 10 years ago
God loved Israel, and to prove his love as to a unfaithful spouse. He gave that loved one every thing they so desired, of the world. And Israel showed their love by using, being disrespectful and unfaithful to God. By creating other Gods and testing his love.

GOD is an awesome GOD. Even today, we still will not heed his voice and he is showing us that he is still in control. His word is coming to pass. The world is in great turmoil and confusion, and we still won't turn to him. What is it going to take? Japan has felt his wrath. Who will be next???
  • Davida on Psalms 78 - 13 years ago
I think that the children of Israel refuse to take Christ as their Father rather they rebelled against Him but God delt with them and choose David to lead among them. GOD IS A GREAT GOD.
