    Part 1 of 2

[Take his garment when he becomes surety for a stranger; And for an adulterous woman hold him in pledge.]

There are just plain dumb decisions that are made in life. At times when we make these stupid decisions, God in His mercy will deliver us from the consequences. If this happens, do not think God approves your actions - He is just showing amazing mercy to you in the midst of them. But there are some decisions God decides to allow us to face - with the full measure of the consequences being given to us. This proverb tells us about two of them.

The first has to do with a man acting foolish financially. When someone becomes surety for a stranger, that is a very foolish thing to do. This proverb tells us to even take a man's garment when this happens. Just as a reminder, surety is when we co-sign a loan - or guarantee another person's debt. If they default on the loan - we are on the hook for what they owe. The reason this is so foolish here is because someone is doing this for a stranger. He doesn't know the man - and is not related to him. He is just guaranteeing a loan for someone he does not know. He does not have a clue as to his character or his integrity - he just lays down his money to guarantee this man's borrowing. Surety is discouraged for anyone - but this should be a no-brainer when it comes to a stranger. With a family member of friend, we at least have a sense of their character and whether they will be likely to repay the loan. But a stranger - we know nothing about him. Thus, Solomon tells us to take this man's clothes when the loan defaults. This is something that hopefully will teach him a lesson about guaranteeing the loans of others - especially those he does not even know.

    Part 2 of 2

The second scenario is when a man hires a prostitute for sex - and offers her a pledge as payment. Adultery is a very foolish sin - but to offer someone our name as pledge is really foolish to another level. Amazing as it may seem, this is what Judah did when he hired his daughter-in-law Tamar as a prostitute. Tamar was not being a harlot. She was simply desiring that Judah's family line fulfill their duty in raising up sons for the deceased. When Judah did not have the money in hand to pay her - she asked for his seal and his cords. These were things by which a man could be known if they were seen. This was not wise for him - but it gave her the proof she needed when her adulterous father-in-law wanted to have her stoned for playing the harlot. When Judah saw his own seal and cords, he was humiliated and withdrew his call for her death.

No one wants to be humiliated by their sin. But there are times when it is a far better thing to be humiliated and learn than to escape humiliation and continue in sin. God is amazing how He delivers us from sin and from the world around us. May God give us grace to embrace that deliverance - and truly be wise.

Comment: I learned this the hard way: helping out people I didn't know well. I got burned each time, until I learned this lesson. Seek God first in all dealings. It's painful to have your trust violated repeatedly. Learn to just say no.

Proverbs 27:13 meaning. I have read Wesley's notes. Need more in-depth answer. Thank you!

I would like you to the following verses 1Timothy 2:12

    1Corinthians 14:34-35

    Titus 2:1-15

I believe you can guide me well through the power of the holy spirit

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Looks like I commented on something else

    entirely. Apology again.

I looks to me like you're saying that she divorced you? If she is a believer in Christ then she's still bound to the vow. If she's not a believer and has chosen to leave, then you are released from your vow.

Matthew 6:31 and following are Jesus's comment on divorce. If the reasons are adultery or fornication, the divorce is final. The vow is broken.

If you have a Bible with center of each page, Reference Columns; the tiny alphabet letters will refer you to Old Testament laws concerning marriage and divorce. But since Jesus re-explained it according to Grace, what's in Matthew 6 is what we have to go by.

Sometimes people can be counseled by their Pastor and make an effort to repair what is broken. It requires co-operation by both parties. All I can really offer, is that you are not breaking faith with Jesus. Talk with your Pastor anyway.

    Book of Joel, Chapter 2

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your DAUGHTERS shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the HANDMAIDS in those days will I pour out my spirit.

Large scale or small scale; people are waking out of their slumber, to preach the return of Jesus. IT IS NOT useful to criticize the preachers gender. I the past , God has even used donkeys or asses to get HIS WORD out to its intended.

We are to encourage each other!! Not strip us down to bones so we become useless. People are falling over like dominoes every day because, where are the encouragers?

It was Mary Magdalene who snapped the Disciples out of their fears and encouraged them to Go See For Yourselves: HE IS RISEN!!!

If you cannot be an encourager to those WHO WILL, GO YE.... go hide in your house with your Bible that has quit speaking to you.

But Jesus would say, be healed, be re-filled and anointed anew with the power of the Holy Spirit; to carry the Gospel and encourage others to join you.

Jesus talked to one outcast Samaritan woman (Gentile) and in the conversation told her of all the secrets of her life. She runs to her village and testifies what happened, and they all run back to Jesus to meet this man of GOD. It says the entire town got born again.

God is doing a brand new thing now. Keep your eyes on him, and let your opinions go. DO what Jesus is doing.

You were supposed to answer using bible references for me to be satisfied. And am really sorry that you mention someone whom when we compare with the word , at a given point she may have gone out of the word. Eg divorce and Malachi 2:13-14 God is against it and she has committed it
  • Mishael - In Reply on Proverbs 27:17 - 3 years ago
No. Joyce Meyer teaches at women's conferences; men are welcome there too.

Our nation is rapidly trying to bust hell wide open. What is wrong with people called of God (not man), teaching the Word of God?

If we were reading our Bibles like we are supposed to, anyone could sniff out heresy!

Look.... in heaven we're going to be like the angels. No dating, no marriage; carnal nature Gone!!

I'm going to tell Bible stories, Mishael-style.

  • Mercy with Cheerfulness - In Reply on Proverbs 27:17 - 3 years ago
There is one scripture that describes you: cheerful. Which is very rare to encounter these days. You show yourself to be blessed.

    Romans Chapter 12

    6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

    7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;

8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, WITH CHEERFULNESS.

9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Hi I see it a little different as if to say a peer or mentor helps or sharpen one abilities or help someone whoms depressed and a smile/countance will appear which will also benifet you I bit like karate kid or a simple as a good morning have a nice day.

I have heard the term:"brother sharpeneth brother" many times over the years: in baptist circles. It is used as the reason for brethren, to go around and point out each other's faults. Very hurtful and self righteous attitude. But that is not the meaning of the passage at all. Notice...... it says "a man sharpens the countenance of his friend". There can be a huge difference between a brother and a friend. We have about 100 folks in our church. I care about all of them, they are all my brothers and sisters in Christ; but only a handful of them would I consider my friend. If my friend comes to me to share something hard to take; I am still going to listen because he is my friend and has my best interests at heart. "Brother sharpeneth Brother is an unbiblical teaching that turns Christians into fault finders.

Father God, thank you for thy grace and mercy as we seek salvation, wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Give it unto us that are seeking our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the will to walk in, Your will Your way, nothing more nothing less and to do so daily. Though not yet perfected my love for you Lord, I don't ever want to be without you again. Please open the eyes of the lost and those that think ourselves found. In Jesus Christ name I pray. Amen
  • Mishael on Author of Confusion - In Reply on Proverbs 27:14 - 3 years ago
That scripture refers to Psalm 12:2. You should read all of Psalm 12. It might make more sense. ( open the links)

    1 Corinthians 14:33

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

    James 3:16

For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Since it shows a situation of no peace; strife; every evil work...I'm thinking Satan is at work in these situations. He comes to steal, kill, destroy. His mandate.

People who are not born again are at the bidding of Satan.

People fight about all the wrong things. If we open a door, the devil and his demonic hoards will come in and wreck lives, families, health, marriages, steal your children away; and lots more.

We can see in Ephesians 6 (open this link)

That we have permission to fight back, and send the demonic into outer darkness.

I've gone through so much spiritual warfare it just turns my focus into radar. It makes me happy satan is going to be locked up a 1000 years and the on to hell eternally.

If you don't know that much go on YouTube. Lots of spiritual warfare preachers, praise God. Point is: get up off the floor and fight back at the source of evil.

I was stalked 3 years over 3 states. I quit running; turned to face the evil and sent that person running at a high rate of speed.

    Hate sin, Love God.

Hi Js, I have found the KJV to be more accurate than the newer Translations they have even contredicted qqGod's Truth which if wanted I will share some with you. Just because it's New dosen't mean it's better or even as good, they say If it works don't fix it! Pride yes if we are bragging about how good we are but we don't have to be sad when we achieve or compare ourselves to others Galations 6.

The new century version of proverbs 27:2 says dont praise yourself let someone else do it. Let the praise come from a stranger, not from your own lips...and the new international version says let the praise come from an outsider.....

I believe that if we would pray more, and talk less, things will be a lot better for everyone concerned. My heart is heavy for those who have no hope. If one Proverb is read daily, your walk will be much more GODLY.

Verse 11: we each have a chance to show whose side we support. We can make Jehovah God’s heart rejoice by giving him our wholehearted support and worship.

"Though you should grind a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him." While the good and righteous want to give every opportunity to the evildoers to clear themselves; at some point the wicked must be judged for their crimes? So long as the lawless are allowed to continue unrestrained, so long will they not change. Kindness is to them, a weakness!
