Wesley's Notes for Proverbs 21:19

21:17 Wine and oil - Delicious fare and luxurious feasting. Wine and oil were much used in feasts in those parts.

21:18 A ransom - The wicked shall be brought into those troubles, which were designed by wicked men for the righteous: thus Haman was a ransom for Mordecai.

21:20 The wise - Wise men lay up desirable treasures for their own use, and for their families. Oil is particularly mentioned, because that was a considerable part of their wealth and treasures in those countries.

Discussion for Proverbs 21:19

My father would always tell my mother this, along with bashing her. Now he is accusing her of witchcraft. Lest we forget that god used A woman in his plan too, to bring his son.
  • Carlton on Proverbs 21:19
I believe that women become contentious when they are not inline with their purpose. Women were formed and given the job of help mate, so when they idle or mislead then they get frustrated and that is when the enemy steps in, and she become contentious.
  • William Herring on Proverbs 21:19
This is one of the most cut and dry scriptures of the bible. What I get from it is you should stay clear of being in relationships with women that are bad tempered and argumentative, I have been there and done that.
  • Evang (Mrs) Gladys Obi Esimoneze on Proverbs 21:19
I am of the opinion that if a husband loves his wife sincerely and demonstrates it by his actions, his wil love him back and there wil not be room for nagging except if she has spiritual problem. Nagging most times come as a result of too much suspicion due of transperency in the relationship, but when there is geniune love and transperency, suspicion disppears and every one is happy so angers disapears, the home becomes very conducive to dwell in instead of the wilderness.

I couldn't figure out why my husband stayed away from me. Then God keeped reminding me of this verse today. Now I see. I had been bitter about the way he was living and I complained constantly, I'm with Gods help am going to stop this complaining and love him no matter what he's doing. (I don't like to be around anyone who complains. So why would he? ) Hope I've helped someone Amen

I'm cracking up laughing at how TRUE this statement is, yet simultaneously crying because of how true it is in *my* life now.

I'm wondering if I can handle being married to this woman for the rest of my life, and the bible is telling me that ANY life, even one where I shun ALL shelter, food, society, and modern conveniences while having to scratch and hunt for basic sustenance would be better for me, and I'd be happier.
  • Johanna on Proverbs 21:19
The Word of God is indeed true. As said in Proverbs 21:19 'It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman", this is happening in my life. For all you know, I am like this, but when I heard and understood what is meant by this passage, I realized how I affected the people around me, most especially my husband because he has learned my ways and I felt sad because of what I did. My husband is a peaceful and quiet man, until he learned to be like me, a quarrelsome, debating guy, who keeps to discussing issues with me. I realized, its because of what I did. I told GOD in my solitude how regretful I was of my sin and promised not to be contentious and vexing wife.

I hope you learned something with my story.
  • Timothy Wayne George on Proverbs 21:19
It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with an angry, and contentious woman. The question is what makes a woman angry, and contentious? Solomon knew a lot about women, because he had many wives. Jesus commanded husbands to love their wives, as their own bodies. No one will harm his own body, but instead will care for it, as well as provide what it needs. A woman responds positively to love, and will not be contentious or angry with her husband when she can see that he loves her sincerely. So love your wife as Christ loves the Church, and gave His body for it.
