Wesley's Notes for Numbers 5:18

5:18 Before the Lord - Before the tabernacle with her face towards the ark. Uncover her head - Partly that she might be made sensible how manifest she and all her ways were to God; partly in token of her sorrow for her sin, or at least for any cause of suspicion which she had given. In her hands - That she herself might offer it, and thereby call God to be witness of her innocency. Bitter - So called either from the bitter taste which the dust gave it, or from the bitter effects of it upon her, if she were guilty. That causeth the curse - Not by any natural power, but by a supernatural efficacy.

Discussion for Numbers 5

David, this part in the Law was only a part of what all is said about adultery: the commandment is, Thou shalt not commit ADULTERY. And the Lord Jesus expounded it to the Jews; who ought to have known already; that the Word goes to the thoughts and intents of the heart; and not only in the physical action. Other Scriptures mention the death penalty applying to both the man and woman for that sin.

Why is it that only women are prosecuted in the Bible days for infidelity?
  • David
I am a bit uncomfortable about the system of the olden days. Why is it that, it's only women's infidelity attracts courses and judgment, does it mean that in those days men doesn't have extramarital affairs?

Verse 20... Simply says, if the woman went out and have laid with another man, she shall drink the bitter water and her belly shall swell. Which gives the sign of an adultery wife. Therefore she will become a curse and many people would know what the women was found guilty of. Also if not guilty she will be free to go and conceive a child with her own husband.. However your sin will find you out.
