People's Bible Notes for Matthew 8:22

Mt 8:22 Follow me. The highest of all duties, now discharged by becoming his disciple, obeying him and making his life our example. Let the dead bury their dead. Those spiritually dead will attend to the last rites of them who have died naturally.

Discussion for Matthew 8:22

  • Michael for verse 22
John 14:6 Jesus said he is the way, the truth the light. His disciple having received and believing Christ to follow him has found the light and now has Salvation to Eternal Life through Jesus Christ... Jesus, talking about the dead burying the dead are those who are spiritually dead. Why? Matthew 4:16 confirms the people which sat in darkness saw great light and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. John 8:12 makes it clearer saying Jesus is the light of the world: he who follows him shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Meaning Any person who have not received Jesus Christ are spiritually dead because they are still living in the darkness of the world.
  • In this verse Jesus is responding to a man who is waiting for his father to die and then he would have sufficient funds to follow from the money gained through the inheritance. Jesus is saying when I call you follow me and I will provide. A verse that comes to mind is Psalms 37:25 Many people intend on serving Christ, when I get out of High School, or College, or when the kids grow up then it 's when I retire. No excuses.
  • Gurjit Singh for verse 22
First dead are those people who do not remenber God.Those people who never do any work for the sake of God.Who never try to find God in themselves. For God these people are also dead or of no value.Spiritually these people are dead for God.Second dead are physically dead people in the world.Christ told his followers that these types of work burrying etc. are for worldly intended people because they have no inetrest in God.You are now awakend towards God and now do that works which help you in spiritual progress.
  • Cynt G. for verse 22
I understand priorities in being a disciple of Christ. I 'm having difficulty understanding why those left behind to tend to the dead are considered "dead. " That 's like saying all that attend to burials and ceremonies are dead in Christ.
  • It's not what do I think, it's what does it say.
The Scripture clearly tell us we need ot get our priorities straight. Much like WWJD what would Jesus do, it's should be WDJD what did Jesus DO. We need to read and pray and do the things the bible commands us to do.
