Wesley's Notes for Matthew 6:22

6:22 The eye is the lamp of the body - And what the eye is to the body, the intention is to the soul. We may observe with what exact propriety our Lord places purity of intention between worldly desires and worldly cares, either of which directly tend to destroy. If thine eye be single - Singly fixed on God and heaven, thy whole soul will be full of holiness and happiness. If thine eye be evil - Not single, aiming at any thing else.

People's Bible Notes for Matthew 6:22

Mt 6:22,23 The light of the body is the eye. This is not an abrupt transition, but bears on the same subject. If one's eye is diseased, all he sees is wrong. So the mind, or conscience, is the light of the soul. If these be darkened, all is darkness; if these see aright, all is light.

Discussion for Matthew 6:22

  • Gregory foreman for verse 22
Why would Jesus say "the eye " not the eyes? I believe he was referring to the mind 's eye or our imagination. Our mind 's eye is how we see and believe the promises of God. That 's what is meant by "looking at the things that are not seen ". Jesus always referred to the spirit of man. He tells us "above all else protect the heart, from it flows the issues of life ". He 's not referring to the physical heart but our spirit. We see with our eyes, plural. We work with our hands, not hand. We walk with our feet not foot.
  • Thapelo Kutoane for verse 22
The Holy Spirit is the Light.
  • Instead of concentrating the thoughts in the material world if one tries to redirect the power of concentration inside then no doubt the light within can be experienced. I m sure the eye which christ has spoke is not the physical one....
  • Gurjit Singh for verse 22
Christ has said 'the eye ' not 'the eyes '.He is not pointing towards two physical eyes. The eye means the strength of soul of seeing. With this strength of soul we become able to see the divine light in our body.So if we awake the strength of seeing of soul or the eye of soul we will enjoy the divine light in the body.
  • Bringer of Fire for verse 22
Vision is what is taken from the outside world, but what the eyes see is nothing but a mere deception of what the world is. From this case if your eyes are dark how great is that darkness or deception? What is inside the mind behind the eyes is the light of the body for everything functions through it. Your eyes can go blind but you can still live, you body can be severed but you can still live. The eye that the Jesus speaks of is the mind. The mind is the light of the body which resides inside of the brain that works both conscious and unconscious behaviors of the body. The mind doesn 't refer to a spirit but to a certain state your body is in. If therefore your mind is full of light, light can give off energy and show radiation so will your body. If that light, that energy, that radiation is closed off how great is that darkness? You have no energy, your not radiating, your not shining.
  • Jesus spoke about keeping our eye "simple". Just as a lamp can illuminate our path and allow us to walk without falling, what we take in through our figurative ‘eyes of the heart’ can enlighten us, helping us to conduct ourselves without stumbling.
A “simple” eye is totally focused on one purpose—that of doing God’s will.
By contrast, a “wicked” eye is crafty, covetous, and drawn to things that are worthless
