Bible Commentary for Matthew 25:10

Wesley's Notes for Matthew 25:10

25:8 Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out - Our faith is dead. What a time to discover this! Whether it mean the time of death, or of judgment. Unto which of the saints wilt thou then turn? Who can help thee at such a season?

25:9 But the wise answered, Lest there be not enough for us and you! - Beginning the sentence with a beautiful abruptness; such as showed their surprise at the state of those poor wretches, who had so long received them, as well as their own souls. Lest there be not enough - It is sure there is not; for no man has more than holiness enough for himself. Go ye rather to them that sell - Without money and without price: that is, to God, to Christ. And buy - If ye can. O no! The time is past and returns no more!

People's Bible Notes for Matthew 25:10

Mt 25:10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came. They were now seeking to obtain the oil in the only legitimate way, and all would have been well if they had attended to it at the proper time, but it was now too late. There is no encouragement to death-bed repentance. The door was shut. The door of the marriage feast chamber. The door of the kingdom stands open now, in life, to every mortal, but it will not always be so. The day of opportunity for everything passes.

Discussion for Matthew 25

  • Michael S. on Matthew 25:10
it is very important to point out that the best translations render the word "marriage " while other so called translations transliteration render the word marriage feast. which translation is correct? for now I 'll trust the KJV which renders "Marriage ".
  • Nkosinathi Ngulube on Matthew 25:10
Nota bena The marriage feast is for the raptured ones, the good servants who persevere. Not all who call unto God are allowed in , however all are invited.

Matthew 25:10 And while they went to buy (use the mark to acquire worldly oil), the bridegroom (Lord) came (returned); and they that were ready (Studied the Word of God received the Holy Spirit that continually fills their lamps) went in with him (The Lord)to the marriage: and the door was shut.
  • Ronald N potter on Matthew 25:10
I believe the door that is shut represents the moment spoken of in 1Cor.15:52. In that moment one must have already accepted Jesus Christ if they have not the door will be shut to them. The wise virgins were the wise mentioned in Matt. 24:45 who were ready for that sudden moment.
  • Mary Bates on Matthew 25:10
God gives us many chances in life, so we need to stay with Jesus at all times and be ready. Never let a crack come in between you and God because Satan is standing by to steal, kill and destroy.
