Bible Commentary for Matthew 22:45

Wesley's Notes for Matthew 22:45

22:43 How doth David then by the Spirit - By inspiration, call him Lord? If he be merely the son (or descendant) of David? If he be, as you suppose, a mere man, the son of a man?

22:44 The Lord said to my Lord - This his dominion, to which David himself was subject, shows both the heavenly majesty of the king, and the nature of his kingdom. Sit thou on my right hand - That is, remain in the highest authority and power. #Psalm 110:1|.

22:46 Neither durst any question him any more - Not by way of ensnaring or tempting him.

People's Bible Notes for Matthew 22:45

Mt 22:45 How is he his son? The answer is not given here, but plain. Christ, the Son of David, according to earthly descent, is the Son of God, God manifest in the flesh.

Discussion for Matthew 22:45

  • Grant on Matthew 22:45
I must comment on Anthony Smith assumption of Jesus being God in the flesh. First of all when the angel anounced the Mary about having her first child, he proclaimed what the name of the child would be and who the father was. Jesus and Son of the most high. Luke 1:31,32. Second, no one has seen God at anytime as a human. Jn.1:18. Jesus has seen the Father, but not in his freshly state. Jn.17:5. The best that Jesus 's disciples could do when they wanted to see the Father was right in front of them, Jesus, Gods representative. Remember, God is spirit.
  • Nkosinathi Ngulube on Matthew 22:45
There is a certain solid veil 'twixt the flesh and the spirit of God that the carnal cannot concieve.Spiritual truth is revealed of God as was to Peter when he said you are the Messiah but herewith it was not revealed to them except their carnal discernment. When we claim to know all things, like the pharisees and sadducees,it is when we know not.Seeking His knowledge must come first.
  • Anthony Smith on Matthew 22:45
There are several occasions when people seeking Jesus would call out to Him and call him Son of David. Many remembered the prophesy given to David a descendant of his would always sit on the throne. Jesus fulfills that completely. However, the point Jesus Christ makes here establishes his Lordship over David. David referred to God as his Lord, thus, Jesus Christ being God in flesh would be the one to whom David referred in song, prayers, and conversation.
