Mark Chapter 5 Discussion

Jesus DID know! Everything that Jesus said and did was for the benefit of others. Whenever he asked a question, he already knew the answer. The unclean sprit replied MY name is Legion, then said further, "WE are many".

Mark wrote that the man asked, "What do you want with ME . . . JESUS said to HIM, "Come out of this man you evil SPIRIT!

My name is Mangrum-Spicer, and we are many!

Yes Carol, Jesus knew other languages. In Mark 5:41, Jesus was using His oft-spoken language of Aramaic (sometimes referred to as Syro-Chaldaic), the then language of Palestine. You can see other uses of this 'tongue' in: Mark 7:34 (Ephphatha); Mark 14:36 (Abba); Matthew 5:22 (Raca), are some examples.

Jesus didn't want His miracles to be sensationalized or overshadow His message of salvation.

I've always thought it was because there were numerous Old Testament prophesies that we're to be fulfilled in his 3 years of ministry that led to the Cross.

    Judas's betrayal was a prophesy.

There are charts on Google that list the prophesy scriptures, and on the other side, the scriptures of when Jesus fulfilled them. The odds of one person doing that, is beyond the number of stars in our galaxy. Incomprehensible.

Why did Jesus not want people to know what he had done.

The important thing is the devils were gone. The man was set FREE that is what has to happen if we are to serve Jesus. When the devils are gone we can be at peace, sit down and will put on clothes.

Mark 5:15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

    Jeanette,

To redeem means to purchase. We see in Romans 3:24 that those who are saved have been justified by the grace of God through the redemption in Christ Jesus. The word redemption means to purchase a slave out of the marketplace for the purpose of setting him free.

So Jesus purchased us from out of the marketplace of the world, where we were once the slave to sin, and He has set us free. We are now His possession. We belong to Christ. Right now, it is like we are sitting at the "will call" booth waiting for the one who purchased us to come to pick us up. Hopefully, that day will be soon!

Jeanette, may the Spirit grace you with HIS wisdom and HIS understanding.

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, SOLD under sin.

We were naturally born flesh and blood; but a body of flesh and blood cannot obtain the spiritual world (the likeness of Christ). Christ came in the likeness of us (sinful flesh) to REDEEM (exchange our body of flesh for his body of GLORY or a glorified body).

Romans 8:6 To be carnally minded (unbelief) is DEATH; but to be spiritually minded (believing) is life (you never die you just change bodies; you are glorified with Christ, you are REDEEMED.

    John 17:21-22

All this was made possible by HIS WORK ON THE CROSS AND HIS RESURRECTION. He was made like you so that you and him could die together and you and him could be resurrected together; now in THE LIKENESS OF CHRIST to live a life without sin (love God above all and your brothers and enemies as yourself)

    Romans 8:29

    Thanks, Richard,

I'll have to remember not to put the comma in when using numbers. One time I had typed a person's name correctly at the beginning of a reply, and before I hit the submit button, it changed the name to something else. I can't remember who I was responding to but it changed the name to Hillary, which wasn't even close to the person's name nor what I typed. That would have been embarrassing!
  • Richard in Christ - In Reply on Mark 5 - 2 years ago
I noticed that also on a post Jesse. When I posted about certain numbers of words changed, or deleted, from the Bible it went from thousands to just the single digit. It seems the comma does that.

    Thanks, Chris,

It's interesting about Gadara being the center of pagan and demonic worship in that region. It was the most active place in the inhabitable world back then for demonic activity and worship. In their demon worship, they sacrificed pigs. I used to wonder why those pigs were there.

The demonic man cutting himself with stones is interesting. He wasn't just doing that because he was under a demonic spirit and trying to destroy himself. That was part of the pagan worship. You cut yourself, and you offer the blood to the demons. What an awful circumstance!

I would say that this is in the category of this man can't help himself. And Mark has told us that nobody else can help him either. It is beyond human ability. But it seems that the demons in this man cause him to come and just fall right before Jesus. The demons weren't worshipping. They were acknowledging that they were in the presence of God.

The confession of the demon speaking through the man in Mark 5:7, "What have we to do with you?" In other words, we have nothing in common! Notice the confession: "Jesus, thou Son of the most high God." They make the proper confession. They confess the truth about who Jesus is, they know who He is, but it doesn't save them!

Verse 10, the demon appealed to Jesus not to send them away out of the country because it was the center of demonic activity and they didn't want to go anywhere else. This is where all the action is. The demon didn't want to leave. He says "Don't send us out of the country!"

These people that lost their whole herd of swine come and see the man that was possessed who is now in his right mind. Mark 5:15 says they were afraid. You can see why. They weren't afraid because of what they saw. They weren't real happy about all this "deliverance" going on. They were afraid because of what's going to happen to their demon worship? They were afraid of Jesus because Verse 17 says they appealed to Jesus to depart from their coasts. Very interesting!
  • Chris - In Reply on Mark 5 - 2 years ago
That was a timely clarification brother. I thought to myself, 'surely this can't be our dear brother Jesse writing the figure 6 instead of the actual greater number'. And that was interesting to note that those swine were raised primarily for devilish sacrifices & the connection with the demons desiring to inhabit the swine. Thank you.

    Penny Bell,

I typed six thousand in my post. I am not sure why this website changed it to six. But where you see 6 soldiers, it is supposed to read six thousand soldiers. Also, it should read six thousand demons, not six. Maybe the website didn't like the comma after the six with three zeros, I'm not sure? Anyways, I wanted to point that out because I do not want to be misleading on the word legion.
  • Jesse - In Reply on Mark 5 - 2 years ago
    Penny Bell,

A legion refers to 6,000 soldiers. This man in Mark Chapter 5 had 6,000 demons. And it was those demons that asked that if Jesus was to cast them out of the man that they would be allowed to enter into the herd of swine.

Now here is something interesting to know. These are a special kind of pig. They raised these pigs, and they were all black pigs, and they used them for demonic sacrifice.

If you study through the history of the Jews, you'll find that down through the history, when Antiochus Epiphanies came in and actually desecrated, or defiled the temple, he sacrificed a pig on the altar.

Leviticus Chapter 7 Verse 11 says that the pig is unclean to the Jews. But these are not Jews. These are Gentiles, and they are demon worshipers. And they raised these pigs for their worship.

So it is interesting and it sort of gives you an indication as to why these demons would ask permission to enter those pigs, and why Jesus allowed it!

What is your opinion regarding the term "legion" as specified in this chapter. I have looked up the term and it states that a legion at the time was 5 to 6 thousand. I read here that 2 thousand swine perished in the sea. I have noticed this as many times as I have read this chapter that I firmly after reading it again, this poor man had at least 2000 demons in him. While that may seem impossible to some, why would so many have perished in the sea if the demons had not taken them there? It's not important in the over all scheme of things but I do find it an interesting discussion. thanks for your imput.

christ let his son die on the cross, How do I praise God and not asking anything,?. How do i praise god Holy name?
  • Chris - In Reply on Mark 5 - 3 years ago
In Mark 5:1-17, we read of the account of the demon-possessed man, who was released from that evil possession. In that release, the demons needed to be physically cast into other living creatures, or else they would roam free to possess others, & so Jesus had commanded them to leave the man & to possess the swine. Of course, the swine began to exhibit the strange behaviour that comes with demonic possession, & began their wild run which saw them eventually drown into the sea.

So the herders of the swine, witnessing all this, also ran off & reported this to the townsfolk. So they told them about how the demon-possessed man was freed & how their swine subsequently perished. So the people were not concerned about the swine - they simply listened to the account by the herders concerning the man & the swine. The herders, of course, would have had to break the bad news to the owners of the swine, as to why the whole herd perished. We're not told about their fate & whether they still had their jobs after all this.

In Mark 5:16 why were the people also concerned for the swine of pigs?

    Amber,

I believe your question is a great one. God is not the author of confusion.

However, I respect others opinions and their journey with the Lord even if I disagree with their doctrine or beliefs.

For two millennia, people have been expecting the Lord to return and arguing over their beliefs.

Obviously after 40 generations (estimate), the world has yet to witness the 2nd Coming.

The Bible has never been proven to be wrong. God states, I have told you in advance, so when it happens, you will know I have spoken it. 66 books were given as proof. Other books are claimed to be part of it, but that is another discussion/distraction for another time.

The Bible claims 2 people and one member of the Godhead have ascended to Heaven. Interestingly, there were witnesses to all 3 ascensions. The Bible claims throughout, Old and New Testaments all others who have passed to be in the grave and awaiting one of the Ressurections.

For myself, I choose to believe the Scriptures instead of mankind that has been trying to change God's Word since creation.

I would recommend you take it to the Lord in prayer. Seek and ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). See Jesus' words for yourself.

    Read the parables.

May you be given eyes to see, ears to hear, and may the Holy Spirit guide and teach you in all things. Blessings and Prayers.

Why does the holy spirit in Mark 5 not unlike all of Christs teaching, give us specific info. 3 things ,Christ ability too cast out demons,Christ ability to heal the long term sickness, and 3 to raise the dead, a 12 yr. old little girl! When i read the commentaries many equate mans sin in relation with all these. how we are all dead in tresspasses and sin, that because of sin we could very well become like the demoniac, we all are born with a long term sickness called sin. Mark records this exactly the way he recalls it. Is there something else we need to know? Are we suppose to look deeper into his words ? How are we to interpret scripture for all to understand. One thing is for sure that wherever Christ goes there is always something extraordinary that will happen. His life and what happens while here on earth is unbelievable. Perhaps these and all Christ miracles are stories that require faith, Faith is the real story, that he did all this and more. Faith will cast demons into hell. faith will heal us from the disease of sin, and truly faith will give us eternal life through him.

    Psalms 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

    1 Samuel 18:6

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.

    2 Samuel 6:5

And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

    1 Chronicles 15:16

And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.

    2 Chronicles 5:13

    It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

    2 Chronicles 7:6

And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of musick of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.

    Nehemiah 12:36

And his brethren, with the MUSICAL instruments of David the man of God, and Ezra the scribe before them.

    Psalms 68:25

The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.

    Psalms 87:7

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

    Psalms 150:4

Praise him with the timbrel and dance:

Their soul & spirits are with God now. Of the dead in Christ. Their bodies will be reunited, first; when they are Caught Up to Jesus in the clouds ("rapture").

Then those believers who are alive will be Caught Up, next. It will all happen in the blink of an eye.

You just blinked :) I did too.

Jesus tells us that we are asleep, when we die. he will come and resurrect us. So , why do people believe that their loved ones are in heaven, when they are asleep? You cant be in Heaven ,if he is coming to resurrect us..

Comments by Alex on the man legion living in the tombs. Legion was MANY as there are many living in the tombs under the Law. The law said the soul that sinneth shall surly die thus we are in the tombs under the law. And legion was without clothing and so are we under the law simply b/c the law exposes our sinful nature. Legion means Many script. says that Many men tried to tame legion with chains and fetters but he broke the chains and fetters to pieces and was driven OF THE DEVIL into the wilderness . ( OUTSIDE THE HOLY CITY ) THE CHAINS AND FETTERS WERE OF IRON BUT THEY WERE WEAK TO LEGION .What the law cd not do in that it WEAK thru the flesh God had to send his son in the form on sinful flesh to condemn sin in the flesh. The laws and commandments are strong as iron but they are Weak to the flesh meaning mans carnal mind is satans head spirit .Carnal man breaks every law and commandment to pieces just like legion broke every chain and fetter to pieces. Many men try to tame their sinful adamic nature with laws and commannments ( chains and fetters ) but we break every law and commandments to pieces. What the law cd NOT do in that it was weak thru the flesh God had to send his son in the form of sinfull flesh to condemn sin in the flesh. simply b/c the law cd not do it. Only Christ cd tame legion by his living WORD, whom the son sets free is free indeed but the law cd not set mankind free. Jesus said whosoever sins is the servant of sin thus we are not free just yet till this corruptible puts on incorruption, and this mortal puts on immortality near future.nobody can tame the beasts that lives with n us as James said all the beasts in the world has been tamed by man but the tongue can no man tame the tongue is an extention of mans carnal mind mans carnal mind is the beast. That which is born of the flesh is the beast When they brought Josephs coat to Jacob he said a wild beast has done this and he was right the 10 born of the flesh was th beasts and still true. gb
