In verse 12 of this chapter he seems to imply that he doesn't want the people to turn away from their sins and be healed. Why is that, because He had said earlier the the sick need a physician not the well and that he cam to call sinners to repentance? I could use some clarification.

    Mark 4 v 23 , 24 , 25

Here Jesus is instructing seekers the key to learning

You really do get what you put in , but beware you must keep what you find or lose it in the end .

If you can't hear clearly ask the lord to speak louder , he will , but keep what he said and sell it not .

Indeed Fred, that's a blessed experience: to see our beloved Lord Jesus in the midst of our stormy lives, running to Him, cleaving to Him rather than focusing on the storm that seeks our ruin.
  • Fred Scanlan - In Reply on Mark 4 - 3 years ago
Truly i believe you are correct in saying that Jesus has power over everything. The storms are indeed a fact of life in everyone's life. What better way to lead an unbeliever into the realm of peace through faith in the gospel? Seeking the truth , the path of righteousness is not without trouble! This is the growing process of God, the bible calls sanctification! When we See a storm coming, we can take cover. Its the storm that happens suddenly, that will make us call on Him! st After we have experienced these sudden storms in our life we can look back and give Him the glory for saving us! The wind can be fierce, like you say it comes quickly on this lake. The same way the holy spirit will come on those that believe the gospel found in Jesus Christ.

Mark 4:35-41. It is a known fact that sometimes storms can suddenly start up on the Sea of Galilee so this occasion was no exception. However, you might be meaning: if Jesus was on the boat, then why should an afflicting storm arise? Jesus, of course has full authority over the wind & the waves, so He could have made sure that they didn't arise while He was out there with His disciples.

Since we're not given the exact answer to this, I see a couple of choices: storms don't matter to Jesus - He is Lord over all, so in the midst of anything 'dangerous', nothing can rob Jesus of His Peace & Power. Secondly, He could have allowed the storm to arise so that his 'faithless' disciples could have a further witness of Who He was & also learn a great lesson of faith - a faith that we today even need to have as we go through the 'storms' of life. We all have difficulties, the apostles more so, but by faith we take hold of God's Hand so we can ride out the storms.

Verse 28-We spread the Kingdom message like a farmer that spreads seeds. It takes time for this to grow just like seeds don't grow overnight.
  • Fred Scanlan - In Reply on Mark 4 - 3 years ago
Jesus uses these words to describe the nature of unbelief and our separation from Him because of our original sin. We really are void when it comes to spiritual knowledge, or as to the things around us? Nature is a prime example!

    Mark 4:11

    Job 11:7

    Deuteronomy 29:29

Do we actually know how to develop a growing seed outside what GOD ALMIGHTY has given us? Can we cause anything to grow & understand how?

Great point. Might I also add that Jesus during his ministry not only proved who he was to a darken world, but also sought to prove to those he held close in teaching that as he was obedient to the Word of His Father so they needed to do likewise. He mentioned time and again that he did as his father commanded. RHe spoke the words of faith not wavering. And this act in calming the storm was another example to his deciles that if they SPOKE the words in faith not wavering then whatsoever the commanded would be accomplished.

His example lead him to allow the decouples to realize that if the spoke as hi did then the act he did they would also do & more due tho his return to his father.

    Thank you

Wesley, that's a good question, as Jesus could have done either, or maybe even shifted the boat to another part of the sea or even to miraculously take all of them onto dry land, leaving the boat to be tossed about & destroyed.

So there were options before the Lord. Yet, I can see that Jesus had to on numerous occasions prove to His disciples (& others) Who He really was - not just another good person or a prophet. Remembering, that these were generally simple, carnal men who would one day believe on Him, do great exploits in His Name & even go to their deaths for His sake. So through Jesus healing of many, raising the dead, revelation of His Wisdom & Divine Authority, forgiving sins, demons fear of Him, acceptance of worship, prediction of the future, equality with the Godhead, etc. all served to not only touch the lives around Him, but to also prove His Deity, Power & Wisdom.

So I see Jesus' calming of the storm & waves as yet another one of those proofs He gave to an otherwise disbelieving & fearful coterie of men. He could have calmed them down with comforting words & seen them through the storm - that would've worked too, but He chose to demonstrate God's Power working through Him & that indeed, God had visited His people.
  • Wesley Smith on Mark 4 - 3 years ago
Why did not Jesus just tell the deciples Not to worry, because He was right there with them and he knows that they would make it to the other side. Instead He spoke to the storm "Peace be still". Give your understanding of the purpose here where either would have been a comforting word.

The heroes of faith in the Old Testament learned that it was the LORD that won the battle every time. Their part in any victory was to simply believe and do as he commanded them.

In Matthew chapter 4, Jesus withstood the devil's temptations by using scripture. The better we know the Word of God, the greater our ability to stand against the assaults of the tempter.

In John chapter 15 we learn that unless we abide in Jesus Christ, we can do nothing. We wither as a dried branch off the vine.

In Ephesians 6, we are instructed in the proper use of the armour of God and told that our warfare is in the spiritual realm, not against flesh and blood.

1 Peter 5:8-11 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

1 John chapter 2 gives us some great instruction on the battles we face with our own nature and the ways of this world.

1 John 5:4-5"For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?"

Revelation 12:11 "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."

How do we use the weapon Jesus have giving us to fight with.
  • Chris - In Reply on Mark 4 - 4 years ago
(Continuing comment). So if he was 'deceived' by all this, then the whole Gospel account is false, i.e. Christ didn't die for our sins, didn't arise, didn't ascend, didn't send us His Spirit & He isn't at God's RH interceding for us. All false teaching based on NOT Paul's deception/perception, but on Satan's lies & deception to the world to keep them in darkness & hid from the Truth. Please also read 1 Jn 5, partic. noting v13: we may be certain of eternal life.

To Javier. I respond to your post & not to the original, which is too old. To first clarify: 1 Cor 15:30,31 shows Paul speaking of his (& other apostles) continual persecution & facing death for the testimony of Christ; NOT to gain favour (or as you maybe thinking: progress to complete salvation). And all this in context of the previous verses: on the fact of resurrection; that if resurrection was not a certainty for him (& to all who believe), they why should he (Paul) allow suffering to be his daily portion; he could 'eat, drink & be merry'. (See following comment).

Ashley, I don't believe so. The thorns in the Parable of the Sower is talking about thorns that were already there, and seed falling on top of the thorns. Then it talks about he that hears the word, he gets involved in the cares of this world, and deceitfulness of riches, and they choke the word out. No spiritual growth there. He's got the Word trying to establish itself in soil that is already taken up.

Jesus calls it the care of this world and deceitfulness of riches. The word care is the word MERIMNA. It is Satan's only weapon against a believer in Christ, and it means the occupation of the attention of the mind. He cannot penetrate the Spirit of Christ that dwells in us, so he keeps us busy and our minds distracted with the cares of this world so we won't have time for the word, which hinders our growth process.

Backsliding is not found in the N.T. and is never applied to the believer in Christ. It is strictly an O.T. term describing the Children of Israel.

    Hope this helps!
  • Ashley - In Reply on Mark 4 - 4 years ago
Does the thorns have to do with backsliding you suppose?
  • Javier Urena - In Reply on Mark 4 - 4 years ago
If it is possible, I'll tell you when I get there :). (Hoping, that is if I make it). Learning and still learning. I believe that is has become simple to say if you believe in Jesus and believe He died for your sins one is forgiven (don't be mistaken, that is true). Paul, one of His messenger's also wrote that he died daily to gain Jesus. Rebuking his *what he believed was true, or his deception* way of living for Him.

Yes it reads deception and not perception.

Some to think about. May God bless many to have eyes to see that they may perceive and a heart to understand

    God bless:-)

  • Mary Leonard on Mark 4 - 4 years ago
We can learn so much from this chapter if people would just open up their eyes and ears. As Jesus said, "you have eyes, but cannot see." "you have ears, yet you cannot hear." We need to take His Words and apply them to our daily life and share with others to bring forth fruit to grow for the Kingdom of God.
  • Vanessa on Mark 4 - 5 years ago
we live in a world where many thorns and thistles are rising trying to choke out the truth putting it away in a closet or covering it up, we are to be the light not blinded by darkness that think they are doing good by God but still in the grips of the fowler, it's not about the world and embracing sin but delivering the word, a house cant stand divided, you cant have it both ways God Bless
