Wesley's Notes for Mark 8:34

8:34 And when he called the people - To hear a truth of the last importance, and one that equally concerned them all. Let him deny himself - His own will, in all things small and great, however pleasing, and that continually: And take up his cross - Embrace the will of God, however painful, daily, hourly, continually. Thus only can he follow me in holiness to glory.

Discussion for Mark 8

Harden not your heart but believe in Him who has power over you, who can save and who can tthrust into hell. Yea, fear him for the devil rules on earth. God is in control and Jesus is not on walking amongst us on earth. He was hear to establish the Truth about life and death. Now it is up to us. Our faith is up to us, what we say, what we do, who we are is up to us! God has establised TRUTH

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (cont.) Keeping in the context of the Lord's teaching here; what is profitable for us is to save our souls through God's mercy and grace, and not have false beliefs concerning this life's worth. This world IS NOT God's final and very good plan for us for eternity; and its real condition is seen by the cross.

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Even while reading the part where Jesus said this, the tendency of many of us is to isolate this sentence and let it just mean "generally" as if our biggest worry should be wanting to be a billionaire!

"And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation." We are in the time of "Many False Prophets" and "Many Who Will Come in [JESUS'] Name And Will Deceive Many." And they find an audience! As much as it makes us mad knowing about them God is proving the people if they will obey or not.
