Wesley's Notes for Mark 10:21

10:21 Jesus looking upon him - And looking into his heart, loved him - Doubtless for the dawnings of good which he saw in him: and said to him - Out of tender love, One thing thou lackest - The love of God, without which all religion is a dead carcass. In order to this, throw away what is to thee the grand hinderance of it. Give up thy great idol, riches. Go, sell whatsoever thou hast.

Discussion for Mark 10:21

  • Papa Bless Christos for verse 21
This corresponds with what Paul taught in 1Corinthians13:having kept the law n commandments therein, this man lacked love.which made his obedience vain in the sight of the Lord....this man had to give away his possessions as a sign testimony of Gods love in him n follow Jesus in other to be rooted in that love of God
  • This verse was to a jew under the law. Not a gentile
  • He loved him. He demonstrated that love for him by telling him what he must do in order to worship and become a disciple. The rich young ruler could have had vast satisfaction and blessing in obedience, but rather chose to be rich, how sad. He could have had great comfort in knowing he had forsaken all for The Master. Instead he doubtless lived a life of misery, never being satisfied with the wealth he loved more than his Savior.

Do we repeat this same mistake? Surely this man was a child of God for Jesus 'loved him'. Nevertheless, his selfishness hindered his joy in this time world.
