V 36,37, very interesting. Jesus is saying write his gospel down because he is leaving earth and wants future generations to know his Word. Before this point, Apostles were preaching by word of mouth, perhaps because many people could not read. Swords are symbolic, swords of truth 2 witnessed by each other. These swords cut down lies. Jesus, was considered by liars to be transgressing their law.

To Felicia - Thank-you, Felicia, for the scriptures; actually my interest was from vs. 10 - 16.

This same chapter also says that Jesus removed his clothes or outer garment;why was that necessary.(#2)After washing their feet,he dried them with the towel he wrapped around his waist..Which would leave one to believe he was Naked..Again I ask;Why was this necessary.
  • Felicia on Luke 22 - 7 years ago
To Irene: The washing of feet is found in John 13 the whole chapter is wonderful but your interest is from verses 3 to 10. Thank you.

    V. 61 - "And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter"; and it broke Peter's heart. Jesus looked on Him with TOTAL love; no condemnation at all - not for denying, but because He loved him. He doesn't love us any less; He can't because Jesus is Love, and that's all he is - in this age of grace when we can still come to Him in repentance. One day He will be our judge, but not now.

    Foot washing - Jn13:8-14
  • Irene123 on Luke 22 - 7 years ago
Foot washing; it goes with communion in scripture and Jesus instituted it (not an apostle) and He is our example and He said, "ye ought also to wash one another's feet." I'm sorry for no scripture ref.; I've looked in the 'last supper of all 4 gospels - can't find it. It's after the communion, but I can't find it.

    Verse 42
Jesus came down to earth to seek and save us. That cup He had to drink could have been our salvation, peace, healing, deliverance, redemption, etc. What would have happened to us if He didn't surrender His will to God? Thank you Lord Jesus for being so willing to die that painful death for us. Lord you gave your life for me, please help me give mine to you willingly. I thank you Lord.

Jesus had such great confidence and faith in his disciples that he made a covenant with them in verses 28 and 29.

It teaches us to be calm when reacting to any situation and also to humble ourselves.
  • Teresa on Luke 22 - 8 years ago
I think this was to show humbleness.

Is foot washing a commandment of Christ as the LOrd's supper seems to be?
  • Tim Dean on Luke 22 - 8 years ago
In order to clearly understand the purpose of the sword, we must first rightly divide the meaning and context of "turn the other cheek. God NEVER intended for us to be door mats or yard dogs to be kicked and slapped for someone else's entertainment. Rather, we are taught by God's Word that we are the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ. We are supposed to walk with power and authority.
  • Drnnis on Luke 22:38 - 8 years ago
I fully agree with both Mark and Kevin. Else why did Jesus rebuke Peter for his use of the sword? Still, I can also understand why Peter thought it was the right thing to do at the time. Paul helps US when he writes, The weapons of OUR warfare are not carnal...

We that are seeking the Lord with our whole heart and are trying to abide in him should always in his will.We know what his will is for us it's His word!We don't have to ask what to do or what we have.Fasting so we can hear the Lord when we get stuck and don't know what exactly he would have us to do but we know that Jesus has provided all that we need to accomplish what he wants us to do!

Colin. I believe that christ was setting examples for us. He is showing us how we are to live. Christ God can do anything, after all he is God the creator. Jesus Told us to pray the Lords prayer. That is a promise to God that we will live on earth as in heaven.

from 1 peter chapter 2 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again when he suffered, he threatened not but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
  • Isaac on Luke 22:42 - 8 years ago
I have myself always placed my will before the Lord 's but it has not done me any good. I have to work on that to see the glory of God.
  • Colin Guttridge on Luke 22:41 - 9 years ago
This proves the fact that the belief of the trinity is incorrect. Each of the three are totally separate. Otherwise Christ would be praying to himself. Something that would create a mockery of Christianity. This also proves there is only one church that is true at this time.
  • Rita Stevenson on Luke 22 - 9 years ago
It saddens me that Jesus was betrayed by Judas and all his disciples- Jesus was so alone in his quest How could a father give his only begotten son for our sins, I owe it to Jesus to be a good Christian and follow his scriptures by avoidance of sins

Luke chapter 22 .Every time I read this chapter , specially this season which is the most appropriate time, I realize how lonely and abandoned Jesus felt on the Mount Olives. He asked His disciples to stay awake and pray , but they could not. He begged His Father if He could spare Him this cup, but he was alone except the angel who came to pray with Him. The betrayal was not only by Judah, but by all the disciples that would not understand His agony and the drops of blood coming down with the sweat. We all betrayed Him that night, and yet He went onto that cross with the weight of our sins on His shoulders. He loved us always, when we were still sinners. And He freed us from all our sins on that cross and by His resurrection He won Satan and Eternal Death, and we came from death to life. Accepting His sacrifice makes us free from sins and we become citizens of Heaven. It makes us the bride waiting now for His coming to take us where He is , as He promised. What a great plan made for us by the Lord, before the beginning ,planning for the end. Thank you Father and Jesus. Amen.

I welcome this verse as one that should be individually interpreted in your walk with God. To me Jeshua chooses words that mean both- sell to buy this worldly item means just what He said. Times are coming that require what it signifies. But because of the ministry that espouses peace and good will, the last thing He wants to focus on is arming the apostles with physical weaponry. But with few words He also meant "That 's enough "-as in I don 't want to talk about it anymore. My take-away- Do what I say, defend yourselves in righteousness, keep my commandments. We currently live in a world that is frighteningly similar as to the one the apostles were walking into.

I believe that JESUS wanted his disciple as well as us today to go further in praying as intercede for our love ones..and he knew that we are a nation that wants to avoid pain at all costs this is why, they are few intercessors most christian operate on a shallow lowest level of prayer but GOD wants to take us into a deeper level of intercession prayer that only a few ever experience deep, profoundly intercession is painful it involves staying before GOD when everyone else has gone away or alseep!
