Wesley's Notes for Judges 7:2

7:2 Too many - For my purpose; which is, so to deliver Israel, that it may appear to be my own act, that so I may have all the glory, and they may be the more strongly obliged to serve me. This may help us to understand those providences, which sometimes seem to weaken the church of Christ. Its friends are too many, too mighty, too wise, for God to work deliverance by. God is taking a course to lessen them, that he may be exalted in his own strength.

Discussion for Judges 7:2

  • I am finding the book of judges to be very meaningful and captivating. I want a little bit more understanding in regards to " And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.". Did God see that if he were to give the Medians over to Isreal who obviously were in greater numbers after the battle would Isreal become arrogant in ways and may become like their oppressors? Please advise..I am learning the bible whenever I can and I need a little more understanding on breaking terms down..Thanks
