Wesley's Notes for John 3:18

3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned - Is acquitted, is justified before God. The name of the only - begotten Son of God - The name of a person is often put for the person himself. But perhaps it is farther intimated in that expression, that the person spoken of is great and magnificent. And therefore it is generally used to express either God the Father or the Son.

People's Bible Notes for John 3:18

Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned. "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved" (Mr 16:16). Faith in Christ is essential to salvation, because it is the power that leads to obedience to him. He that believeth not is condemned already. "Shall be damned" (Mr 16:16). The unbeliever condemns himself. He is lost and refuses to be saved by Christ.

The purposes of Baptism are manifold. It is a washing in the Spirit and an immersion into the things of God and His covenant fellowship. It is a sign of birth from above for being set apart unto God to the holy and sacred, away from the world of the natural and common. It is an outward confession of an inward working of God's power and salvation. There are a many Baptisms which all work unto one.

Kevin; in answer to your question; Baptism is something God has commanded us to do. Jesus Himself was baptized; and He rebuked and scorned the Pharisees, for not repenting and being baptized. In the last chapter of Mark, Jesus said, that he that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be damned. We obey because we are converted, and wish to please Him in all things.

What is the purpose of baptism? Can one be saved and go to Heaven without being baptized?

Zeneida; I'm so sorry! I didn't read your post right; I hope you can forgive me. Please don't be mad at me; I had to read a second time; and then I saw that I was to hasty. You say it perfectly; it is not automatic that everyone goes to heaven when they die! This is a great teaching about the meaning, and of our whole experience in this life: we are born into the world to "be made" God's children!
