People's Bible Notes for John 1:48

Joh 1:48 Whence knowest thou me? Nathanael, who had never met Jesus before, was surprised to hear himself spoken of as one known. When thou wast under the fig tree. There was something about this answer that filled Nathanael with astonishment. Under the shade and shelter of the fig tree he had some rare experience that is not recorded, and that he supposed unknown to man. That Jesus knew of it and read his soul startled him and dissipated his unbelief.

    V. 47 - " ..... in whom I no guile." This statement proves early on that Jesus can see into our hearts. I know personally of no one outside of living for Jesus, that has no guile. But, Jesus wasn't saying Nathaniel was sinless, we all have been born in sin, let alone the sins we have committed. Guile is - lying, craftiness, evil.

    V. 14 - "..... the Word (God) became flesh; 1 Tim.3:16 - "..... God was manifest in the flesh (Jesus). God needed to 'show' Himself to mankind, but God is a spirit - so can't be seen by physical eyes. Jesus was only in the mind of God from even before the foundation (creation) of the world. God is - omniscient - ALL KNOWING; He had this whole plan, world, humans, salvation before time.

Gen. 1:1- "In the beginning God." Gen. 1:26a- "And God said, Let us make man in our image..." This is the Trinity- God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word" The Bible tells us that in the beginning the Word existed. In ver. 14 it says the Word was made flesh, Jesus came in the form of man, and is the only begotten of the Father. John 3:16
