Wesley's Notes for James 1:27

1:27 The only true religion in the sight of God, is this, to visit - With counsel, comfort, and relief. The fatherless and widows - Those who need it most. In their affliction - In their most helpless and hopeless state. And to keep himself unspotted from the world - From the maxims, tempers, and customs of it. But this cannot be done, till we have given our hearts to God, and love our neighbour as ourselves.

Discussion for James 1

Verse 13: God doesn't tempt man is very clear, test yes, but tempt no. Neither does the devil make man do sin, our own desires of the flesh are what lead a person down the road to destruction, verse 14. Faith is more than saying, I believe so I am saved. It takes a deep conviction that is strong enough to change conduct befitting God and saying no to temptation of our own bodies to sin, obedience

    James 1 Verse 14
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

    Example: King David was enticed!!
    11 Samuel Chap 2Verse 2
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

James 1:21"receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls. The "engrafted word", is all 66 books of Holy Writ. The"engrafted word" is not what some teach that there are only certain parts that pertain to salvation. I think they call it "fundamentals, and essentials doctrine" Be not deceived.

I see that this whole chapter has to do with bearing up under fiery trials of temptations. To the Saints of Jesus they are the means for purifying us, and fashioning our character to be like Him. So if we are poor in this world, then we count it an honor and a promotion from God, to be counted worthy of these things. If someone is rich in this world, he will call it blessing for God to humble him.
