Wesley's Notes for Hebrews 11:4

11:4 By faith - In the future Redeemer. Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice - The firstlings of his flock, implying both a confession of what his own sins deserved, and a desire of sharing in the great atonement. Than Cain - Whose offering testified no such faith, but a bare acknowledgment of God the Creator. By which faith he obtained both righteousness and a testimony of it: God testifying - Visibly that his gifts were accepted; probably by sending fire from heaven to consume his sacrifice, a token that justice seized on the sacrifice instead of the sinner who offered it. And by it - By this faith. Being dead, he yet speaketh - That a sinner is accepted only through faith in the great sacrifice.

People's Bible Notes for Hebrews 11:4

Heb 11:4 Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain. See the account of Ge 4:1-5. Abel's faith was probably shown in offering just such a sacrifice as the Lord demanded, while Cain made an offering according to his own ideas. By which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts. In some way the Lord testified his approval of Abel's sacrifice, and showed his disapproval of Cain's, perhaps by sending fire to consume Abel's. And by it he being dead yet speaketh. By his faith. His faith speaks to all ages.

Discussion for Hebrews 11:4

  • Dr. Tom Neel for verse 4
In my opinion, the picture that is painted in Genesis 4, is that Able offered the first of his flock and Cain waited until the end of the season to offer God an offering. So Cain may not have given a first fruit offering. One thing the Scriptures do not say is the quality of Cain 's offering but it does say that Abel 's offering was the first. So in summary Cain 's offering was the work of his hands and Abel 's offering was by faith because it was substitutionary.
  • Blessing for verse 4
Abel has the mind to give God testify of him while cain has bad mind of give he was not remebered.
  • Anonymous for verse 4
Abel's sacrifice was blood, while Cain sacrifice was without blood. And the bible said,'he obtained witness that he was righteous'. It is blood that maketh atonement for our soul. In Leviticus 17:11 so Cain's offering was not of spoilt things as some people say,but was without blood and that sacrifice could not atone for his sins, and therefore God did not his sacrifice.
  • Lou sims for verse 4
my believe is that Abel's faith in God were much stronger than cain's,because Able give his sacrifice from his heart.where cain didn't.Abel give back what the Lord bless him with his first.
