  • Paul
Genesis 46:21 says there were 10 sons of Rachel that were 14. 14 what? 14 years old? Giving birth to 10 sons that are 14 years old is impossible. Each pregnancy takes 9 months!

The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. Joseph had 2 sons. Benjamin had 10 sons. 12 sons total. Add Joseph and Benjamin and you have 14 souls.

Paul, begin at v.19 and count: The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife Joseph, and Benjamin. That's 2. Verse 20, Joseph had 2 sons. 2 2 4. Verse 21, Benjamin had 10 sons. 10 4 14 Verse 22, These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen. Fourteen is how many souls came out of Rachel's union with Jacob. Her 2 sons and their 12 sons. 14.

That makes sense they counted in a different way some of us do.

Verse 34- prejudice is an imperfect human trait and can take many forms. We must guard against showing personality because of any external circumstances of a person.

WOW! Not by their will, GOD's people find themselves in a stranger's country... never-the-less, GOD being a Good-Shepard, protect and bless. WOW!

When one comes across a verse, verses that use the terms 'cattle' and 'sheep' seemingly interchangeably - that is exactly what is being done. In the O.T. cattle, sheep, goats, asses, etc., were in general called - cattle. It's God's word; take it up with Him.

Roy, I guess it would be pretty boring for you and your "Bible Study" group to have your families' named one by one, as part of the Registry of the Saved! It is offensive to everyone who loves the Lord, and reverences His word, when someone speaks so glibly and with common terms about Scripture! "All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, . . ."
  • Roy
It is good history however, kind of a boring read. I am teaching Genesis in our Bible Study and I need to keep people awake while reading all the names.

Refresh their minds on who these people were in the last chapter and what happened as a result of what they did... You know at the Bar B Que last summer when your 1st cousin hit on your 2nd cousin and her big brother almost started a fight about it? Well that's what we had here...Except her brothers talked his family into becoming one like them by being circumcised..then they killed all the males.
  • Dennis
JUST a thought. KJV often uses cattle to translate Hebrew word for livestock.

Sandra, good question. It is a little confusing from Joseph 's conversation with his brothers and their conversation with Pharoah what he was asking them to say to Pharoah and what they said to Pharoah. It appears to me what the Holy Ghost is saying is what Matthew Henry said in his commentary of this chapter do not be ashamed of your occupation. Mr. Henry said its better to be a credit to a mean post-or occupation than a shame to a nigh one. It Seems to me according to the Scripture you quoted here that the Hebrews and the Egyptian both called sheep cattle as well in those days. Note Pharoah 's comments after Joseph 's brothers told him their occupation as shepherds 47:6 "the land of Egypt is before thee in the best of the land make thou father and thou brethren dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity-or any hard workers among your brothers- then make them rulers of my cattle. Therefore, it seems that Pharoah himself had some sheep somewhere in his kingdom because they made it clear to him that they were shepherds. God bless us all and also in the understanding of his Word. Glory be to God in the highest through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen!
  • Sandra
33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? 34 That ye shall say, Thy servants ' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen for every SHEPARDS is an abomination unto the Egyptians. After Joseph ask his Bros. to say cattle in Genesis 47: 3 his bros still say SHEPARDS, could someone explain this to me. Thank you, Sandra

jessica Genesis 46v17 talk about the second daughter Serah as one of the children of Asher

Although it is written the English interpretation as to the fact that there were three score and ten I would like to point out that in fact 70 went down in to Egypt. Leah and her team = 33 in all ( but we have to cross off, Err and Onan, who were kill for their transgressions ) =30 Zilpah and her offspring = 16 .Bilhah and her line = 14 and Rachel/Benyamin = 70.
All in all that amounts to 68 . Yocheveth , Moses' future mother was born between the borders of Canaan and Egypt = 69 .and the last but certainly not the least G-D.after all He promised Jacob that He would not abandon him and therefore went down into Egypt too , thus closing the list at 70.
  • I actually had a similar issue, but when you look at the verse carefully, then it makes sense. The keywords to focus on are "sons" and "daughters." The verse says that these were the SONS Leah bore to Jacob besides his daughter Dinah. This statement does not mention how many sons, but I count 32 sons total (deducting 2 that deceased in Canaan). The next sentence says that these sons and daughters of his were 33 in all, which I think is including Dinah.
    Hope this makes sense.

@ Ruth Ann, I've counted the names numerous times and come up with 34 minus Er and Onan makes 32. I cannot derive 33 souls with the names given in this chapter and I'm not counting Pharez twice. Please help me to understand how there are 33?
  • Jessica for verse 15
I'm stumped as well Mark, only commentary I can find is Coffman and he says 'it doesn't really matter' but it does! The only thought I have is that the verse states 'daughters' which is plural but I don't understand why the Bible would not make mention of one more name if there were 2 daughters instead of just Dinah. I would really like to know the answer to why the names only add up to 32 (you would deduct 2 from 34 for Er and Onan cause at that time their souls were not with them for God slew them in Canaan)
  • Ruth Ann
Mark, you probably counted Pharez twice. There's 33.
  • Something is wrong here. The verse states that all of the souls of his sons and daughters (by Leah) was 33. it is actually 34. it would add up to 33 if you did not count his daughter Dinah, but then why mention her by name and why say "of his sons and his daughters?"
  • James Martin for verse 13
Is this the Job also who is in the bible. who suffered much, yet woud not turn from God ?
GOD spoke to many people in visions and dreams, today he speak to us through HIS WORD the BIBLE.

Going to church on Sundays is fine for Fellowship, but we must remember to have a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with GOD, through OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST.

STUDY GOD'S WORD, and HE will speak to you through your SPIRIT.

OUR conscience either excuse or accuse.
