Genesis Chapter 40 Discussion

Potiphar Believed Joseph. The Bible doesn't Tell Us this. But for a Slave to Sexually Assault a Free Woman, Especially a Woman of this Standing. It would have Resulted in a Death Sentence. Just the Accusation Alone would have been enough to Execute Joseph Immediately. But Joseph's Character is so Godly and He Carries so Much Favor with God. The Bible doesn't let Us in on every Little Detail, but Obviously Potiphar's Wife has a Habit of Seduction. Potiphar has Enough Pull in His Position to Spare Joseph's Life. We get Caught Up sometimes in Our Surroundings, We Forget to Walk by Faith and not by SIGHT. We can't See that God is Standing Right Over Us.

This part of the story of Joseph in Egypt shows how God stayed with Joseph in every circumstance. he was going to fulfill Joseph's fore-ordained purpose no matter what choices people made in Joseph's life. I was glad to read that Joseph's faith had grown since he attributed the interpretation of dreams to God. It must have been a bit difficult to tell the interpretation to the baker knowing that the outcome was not good for this person. But, Joseph believed He was speaking for God and feared God enough to speak truthfully, wishing to please God and not man. Perhaps having the opportunity to interpret these dreams was a way to prepare Joseph to interpret Pharaoh's dream, which was riskier than interpreting the dreams of the prisoners. Knowing that his interpretations of the dreams of the two men helped Joseph gain confidence that God was indeed working through him in such a supernatural way, that it wasn't himself interpreting, but God.

In this current day Joseph is certainly a bright and shining example for us to follow, especially in the area of faith. Faith is a spiritual substance and a gift for those who use their God given free agency to acquire it when offered by our Lord... especially through difficult times. I have been privately ashamed to watch others perform with God so gloriously and have watched myself preach to others and at the same time stammering in faith. BUT...as with Joseph, Jesus is always the remedy. I have always believed that the level of Joseph's faith did not line up his request to be remembered regarding his stay in prison by someone who was getting out. Hence his own stay was extended. I have seen God work that way many times if He chose to. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Blessed be all his friends/servants who endure to the end. LOVE.

I believe pharoah got a bad case of food poisoning and had to investigate who tried to kill him, meanwhile throwing both in prison so they didn't repeat it or escape.

How easy one forgets of others when they are no longer in the struggle. Hmm, I have to review that in my own life...

Thank you for your comments to help me understand that good can come out of a bad situation. It's a matter of perspective and putting a title on situations "Good" or "bad".

Day 13 of Bible in a year. Feels like 2 months already haha

    Great stuff to learn!

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Verse 6- Joseph paid attention and cared for the feelings of others even though he was not in a good situation himself.

Verse 8~Joseph acknowledged that the ability to interpret dreams comes from Jehovah God. He gave God the rightful praise and credit that he deserves.

Joseph's time in Egypt seemed to be there to teach him one great lesson: Others may mean you evil in the things they do, but God means you good in those very same things.
Had his brothers not meant him evil he most likely would not have been in Egypt.
Had Potiphar's wife not lied, he wouldn't have met the Butler.
Had the Butler not forgotten him, he wouldn't have interpreted Pharaoh's dream.

We will at times think that our good words are wasted on people, and their neglect to render to us good again in return will disappoint us. It is not however; as some mistakenly use; "casting pearls before swine;" for our life is in God's hands, and our days for being His servants, to do with us after His own plans. This is not ALL of our story! We wait for, and look for a better Country to come.

Be care full of how we treat other people because some day they might be over us. It would have been easy for Joseph to have taken revenge on the butler after he was promoted.

The story of Joseph, and the two officials of Pharoah is interesting as it reveals God's sovereighty. One thing that thickly caught my attention is the fate of the king's baker who should have been restored just as the butler rather he was killed. The butler did nothing special to deserve restoration yet he received pardon from the king. May God not allow us die where we would have been delivered. May we not be victimized where we are supposed to have victory.

Chief Butler was lifted up, he forgot about Joseph.Life is like that, we shouldnt blame him. Many things could have responsible for that. The most important thing is Joseph was lifted higher than Butler. This should be a lesson to us Christians, we must always trust in the Lord. Our local pastors, wives, children, doctors, lawyers and governments can fail us but God will never fail. He wont fail because it isnt possible for God to fail.

In Genesis 40, speaks how God was fulfilling his promiss to Joseph which hi promissed to him long time ago.
  • Dewey J on Genesis 40 - 8 years ago
Daniel, the Scripture in chapter 40 says nothing about Joseph having another encounter with Pharaoh before he was brought out of prison to interpt this dream. If it doesn 't speak of anything in Scripture I will not proclaim it as the gospel. God bless us all and also in the understanding of his Word. Glory be to God in the highest through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen!
  • Dewey J on Genesis 40 - 8 years ago
Stephen, it 's impossible to restore a fallen angel because they knew exactly what they were doing when they rebelled against God in Heaven. 2 Peter 2:4 says, "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them in chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgement. This is the white Throne judgment and after this come the lake of fire for the fallen angels and all unrepentant human sinner which is the second death. Jesus preached to the people that perished in Noah 's day 1 Peter 3:18, 19, 20 says, "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened-or- made alive by the Spirit-or- Holy Ghost v19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison v20 Which sometimes were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water. That 's eight souls were saved from the water by Noah 's ark. God bless us all and also in the understanding of his Word. Praise God through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen!
  • Stephen on Genesis 40:1 - 9 years ago
Does this also represent Jesus s judgement over the earth or even deeper when, after his crucifixion he spent three days in hell sheol preaching to the fallen angels: 1 Peter 3:18-20. Will even some of these go back to serving God?
  • Joseph on Genesis 40 - 9 years ago
Indeed God controls time and seasons and He is never late. He will never share HIS glory with man over anyone He has anointed for a purpose. The Bible is true that 'A MAN CANNOT RECEIVE ANYTHING EXCEPT IT BE GIVEN HIM FROM HEAVEN ' John 3 27 If the Chief Butler had used his 'connection ' with Pharaoh to bring Joseph out that time, God would not have been fully glorified and Joseph would not have become the Prime Minister of Egypt as he would probably have escaped back to his father Jacob . God is infinitely wise! Another lesson i learnt from this Chapter is that regardless of whatever trials and challenges we might be facing, we should seek to do good as Joseph did by asking after the welfare of the Chief Butler and Chief Baker. Indeed our gifts will eventually speak for us! May God help us to use all He has deposited in us for His Glory and Honour alone in Jesus Name
  • Daniel on Genesis 40 - 10 years ago
Pharaoh upon hearing the interpretation was never the less skeptical as to the accuracy of the prediction and demanded that Joseph give him a sign. The following was not short of a tragedy as Joseph prophesized that Pharaoh's wife, pregnant and about to give birth would do so in a few days' time and on the day she would give birth Pharaoh's son, now a few years old, would die. Joseph was return to the dungeon and only when the foretelling came true, was he taken out and installed as regent of all the Egyptian empire
  • Daniel on Genesis 40 - 10 years ago
It should be understood that at the time of Joseph's incarceration, the pharaoh of this time was not an Egyptian but from a nomadic tribe, the Hyksos (a people from West Asia who took over the eastern Nile Delta, ending the Thirteenth dynasty of Egypt and initiating the Second Intermediate Period. "Hyksos" derives from the Egyptian expression hekau en khaswet [HkAw n xAswt] ("rulers of foreign lands"). When Abraham lost his wife Sarah he took a third wife by the name of K'turah and it is said that the rulers of that time were descendants of the offspring of K'turah, thus easing the meeting between Joseph and Pharaoh.

When Pharaoh asked Joseph for the answer to his strange dreams Pharaoh remembered the dreams but even though the Lord had given him the answer it escaped him, therefore when Joseph explained it to him the whole story clicked in. Many times we remember a place or person but only when someone else runs off a list of names do we suddenly stop them at the name we wanted and that is what happened here.
  • Daniel on Genesis 40 - 10 years ago
A question is raised as how is it possible that a person has his life spared and this was prophisised by another and yet something so seriouse can be forgotten. Well the scriptures we read are not only there so we can marvel at the greatness of our fore fathers, they are there to educate us through their mistakes. Joseph after saying that all he says comes not from him but from G-d stangely enough slipped up. He said to the chief buttler not to forget him. He placed his fate in the hands of a mortal. G-d punished him by leaving Joseph in the prison another two years and it was the Lord he caused the buttler to forget.
  • Daniel on Genesis 40:15 - 10 years ago
In and around the ancient Mediteranian area no man could be a slave and then in due course become a king. This was an ethical NO-NO. When Joseph stated that he had been stolen and not only was he not a slave he had a aristocratic line running way back to Ever(Eretz ha Ivrim)He knew that he would rise to gteatness and therefor prepared his way by denying the fact that he was a slave and making known from where he came.
  • Daniel on Genesis 40:15 - 10 years ago
In the hebrew text it states twice the fact the Joseph was stolen. Generally this points to a "closed subject". When G-d lays down a demand it may appear twice ( remember... and don't forget) so why was the theft mention twice?
The reason being that when the Midians Camel train had passed the pit, into which he had been thrown, having pulled Joseph out ,thought he was a slave, and they stole him. When that same camel train passed the brothers, who were sitting not far away, were stopped by the brothers and they demanded to know what the Midiams were doing with the "young man" they replide that they had fond this slave. The brothers on the other hand did not deny that fact and promptly sold him for a meager price. Now the fact that the brothers did not demand the return of their brother, gave weight to the Midians calling Joseph a slave. This was a lie and in keeping quiet and not righting a wrong was the second theft ( in hebrew this is steeling of knowledge/truth)

Who God blesses no man can curse no weapon that is formed against God's chosen can ever prosper. God was with Joseph from day one throughout all that he endured by the hands of every one that hated him; all that was to bring glory and honor to the loving God who will never cease to protect his children. Whatever trials we go through is only for our good it strengthens us to continue doing the will of our father. Joseph was a man after Gods own heart. God knew who Joseph was and what he stood for and he protected him.
  • EVANS ACHIENG on Genesis 40 - 11 years ago
When God is with you, He is with you. You can be rejected by family, falsely accused and cast into prison. BUT He is still with you. The path He has designated for us we must follow....
  • Hemant on Genesis 40 - 11 years ago
We see God's intervention in the life of Joseph. He was planned to be killed but God being in Rueben did protect him. Next they threw him in the pit but God was in the pit with Joseph. Afterwards he was sold to Potiphar as a servant but God blessed the house of Potiphar. He was accused by his wife for nothing and he was cast into the prison but God was there in the prison with him. We just can imagine how loving our great God is. He doesn't leave us anywhere and desperate and defeated. Joseph has proven himself and has seen the glory of God in all these circumstances but he has yet to see more of God, that's why when he tells the man to make mention of him to Pharaoh he forgets. Joseph seems to be little bit faithless in this occasion but it is up to God. God wanted people to see God's presence in the life of Joseph.
