    1Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.

    2Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;

    3 An Bashemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.

    4And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;

    5 An Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.

    6And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.

    7For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.

    8Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.

    9And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir:

    10These are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

    11And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

    12And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife.

    13And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

    14 An these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

    15 Thes were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,

    16 Duk Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came fr Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

    17And these are the sons of Reuel Esau's son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in t

    Did Esau worship others gods instead of God?

    Esau Sold His Birthright to Jacob, because it held no Value to Him. What We miss is this, This is a Well to Do Family, and Nobody is Going to Starve or Faint or Collapse from lack of Food. Food could be Summoned ,,just like that by Servants. The Birthright also Carried More Responsibility than Esau wanted to Carry. He saw a Easy Out,, and then later on, He could hold it over His Brother. If You are left let's Say,, a Car that You care absolutely nothing about. And Someone Else, says , Hey I can take that Off Your Hands, how much do You want for it? And then Later on, You feel Resentment at that Person, because Time has went by and now You Realize the Value of it now. That's Exactly what Esau did with Jacob, as Time went on, He saw the Value of His Birthright, and became Bitter against Jacob. This is Our Nature, We see as a Whole , Someone being Successful with Something We Struggled with and it Makes Us Frustrated, Envious and even like Esau,, Hostile. But God has a Plan, and Always Remember that All Who Call Upon The Name of the Lord shall be Saved.

    This chapter gives the lineage of Esau. It says that he left Canaan (the promised land) to live in Seir. There was are mountains there that stretch from the southeast of the dead sea to the gulf of Aqaba. Seir means hairy, so it was named after Esau. His lands were called Edom and he was renamed "Edom" in scriptures, too. Edom means "red" as Esau was known to be hairy and red all over. (perhaps with red hair).

    The remainder of the chapter recounts the sons born to Esau from is three wives and also is sons' sons. They were called "dukes" (princes or chieftans). Esau's lineage was the ruling class of this area which was inhabited by other groups when Esau moved there. It does not say how Esau became so powerful over the inhabitants, but perhaps having so many sons and grandsons factored into this.

    First of all. If I purchased some thing, it becomes mine. If Esau was any honest man he would tell his father what he did. Before birth they struggled so bad that Rebeckah enquired of God the reason. His answer, you are carrying twins, the younger will rule over the older. A spiritual hint that God is interested in the younger..Jacob for head of His Chosen People now called the Jews. Ungodly E

    To Ralph M Waters. The Bible is the Inspired word of God written by Devoted Men ..... Every word is true weather we agree disagree God make His choice, even before Esau was born God knew who was the chosen one Esau beau heart was not fix on God so Jacob was the chosen one
  • Stanjett - In Reply on Genesis 36 - 4 years ago
    Why do some of you keep saying that Jacob stole Esau's birthright? He did not he bought it. Go back and read and you will find where he bought it.

    I was wondering that same thing this morning as I was reading. Why some are dukes and others are not.

    Hi Janet; The answer to your question is longer than we have room in this format to explain and teach; but the short answer is, that the heathen Esau would have nothing to do with the God or the faith of his father Isaac and grandfather Abraham; and chose instead the pride and arrogancy of Nimrod and his antichrist exploits and blasphemies. There were no wars nor slaves nor kings before that!

    Cheryl,

    Just as Abram was to be Abraham and Sarai was to be Sarah, Jacob was to be Israel because God is now ready for him to fulfill his mission. No longer the old nature, but walking in the faith that the Messiah, Jesus, would come through the Jewish people.
  • Cheryl on Genesis 36 - 7 years ago
    Since God changed Jacob name to Israel why did the writers still call him Jacob not the name God had given him Israel

    We should pray for our seed i.e. our Children and grandchildren that none of them will become a tool in the hands of satan. Amalek was a grandson of Esau and he 'via HAMAN through bloodline ' so hated the Israelites so much that he wanted to wipe them out of existence but for divine providence through Esther and Mordecai. Indeed God is wiser than us when He commands us not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. Esau and Jacob twins were of the same seed of Abraham but Esau 's wives were from ungodly, polluted bloodline and produced the spiritual 'monster ' called Amalek, the ARCH enemy of Israel. May our seed not produce the Anti Christ or any of his cohorts in Jesus Name.

    Tim....it is 2 different Korahs

    In 36:5 the Korah referred to here is son of Aholibamah and Esau
    In 36:16 the Korah referred to here is son of Eliphaz. Eliphaz is Esau's son with Adah, hence the Bible says Korah is son of Adah (meaning of her lineage -her grandson)

    5 And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these [are] the sons of Esau

    16 Duke Korah, duke Gatam, [and] duke Amalek: these [are] the dukes [that came] of Eliphaz in the land of Edom

    Because of the list of siblings I concluded - two different persons with the same name.

    JACOB stole ESAU birthright -Yet GOD still provided blessings for ESAU and his generations.

    GOD knows what we need before we ask. Therefore, you may ask for one blessing, but don't overlook the blessing GOD wants you to have.
