Genesis Chapter 11 Discussion

Although Genesis 11:26-27 lists the order of Terah's sons as Abram, Nahor and Haran, this appears to be according to the regard God has for them in terms of their importance to establishing His chosen godly line of promise and not their natural birth order. Haran almost certainly is the natural first born son of Terah for several reasons:

    1. Haran dies in Ur of the Chaldeas before any of His relatives begin to sojourn.

    2. If Haran was Terah's first born son and died before Terah did, Lot would have to remain with Terah from that time until Terah's death, since Lot would then be the heir of Terah's possessions, not Abram or Nahor.

    3. Haran is old enough to father the wife of Abram's brother Nahor before he dies. If Haran was older than Abram by 60 years this makes sense.

    4. In Gen 12 Abram seems to be genuinely interested in being treated well by Pharoah for Sarai's sake, which would be less likely to be important to Abram if he had inherited all of Terah's possessions as the first born son.

    5. Lot's possessions seem to rival Abram's possessions in Gen 13, which would be significantly more likely if he was nearly equal in age with Abram and Lot had become wealthy through inheriting Terah's possessions.

    6. In Gen 13 Lot is given first pick of the land of their sojournings by Abram. Lot makes no effort to show any special appreciation to Abram for granting him this honor. Lot's acceptance of the honor without showing any deference would be unthinkably arrogant if Abram was actually the first born heir of Terah. However, this all makes sense if Abram was showing recognition that Lot was the heir of Terah as the son of Terah's first born deceased son.

    7. In Gen 19:31 Lot's daughters consider him old when they conspire to get pregnant by him. This is much more likely if he was in his 80s or 90s like Sarah and Abraham, rather than in his 60s or 70s, which is the oldest he would likely be if Haran was Abraham's younger brother.

Hi wayne Scripturally I don't read where days or years were shorter.
  • GiGi - In Reply on Genesis 11 - 2 years ago
It is unclear if the length of our days and years were the same as then as now. Perhaps findings of science may shed some light on this matter. And then the scientific reasoning on what they find could be accurate or faulty. When examining scientific discoveries an the way scientist interpret the artifacts or findings, I take a a prayerful approach. God allows things to be discovered, unearthed, and/or calculated scientifically for a reason. Perhaps to test our faith in him and His Word or maybe to shed more light on what Scripture has said or perhaps even left out.

How did certain people in bible times live so long?

Were the years shorter than 365 days ?

Was a year in those days equal to a Year today ?

Or was it divine intervention ?

This account of the confusion of languages at Babel and the dispersing of peoples throughout the world is instructive. God have commanded that people fill the peoples in Babel knew this command because it was expressed in the explanation of why they endeavored to build the tower to the heavens. They desired to remain together and the civilization that existed at this time promoted this. The spread across the world perhaps was inevitable as populations increased to need migration further away from the centralized hub of civilization. However, these people did not want to do what God had commanded and they thought they could resist God's actions by building this tower. isn't that the story of mankind down through the ages? trusting man's wisdom and innovation over God's directions and will? makes me wonder how much I have leaned on things man has developed or promoted rather than seeking God's direction first. I pray to live a more thoughtful life day by day as I hope to seek God's will in ALL things.

Some say that the world's land mass was centralized at this time and began to break apart and drift into two hemispheres. This could explain how easy it would have been for these generations to spread out and inhabit all lands of the earth. The breaking apart of the continents would have provided obstacles that allowed peoples to become isolated and develop genetic characteristics, lifestyles, and cultural traditions specific to their areas of habitation.

Also, the presence of similar societal laws, architectural structures, religious practices across the globe from ancient past seems to harken back to a common civilization at one time, which would be here in Mesopotamia.

I have wondered if Noah had any written account of life pre-flood or made any post flood that were passed down to his descendants. If so, they must have gotten lost at some point, as Moses was the one who put these Scriptures in writing.

I think it highly likely that pre-flood peoples had writings.

Your Comment...Haran the son of Terah has how many children?
  • NOAHS LONG LIFE - In Reply on Genesis 11 - 2 years ago
Mishael comment: The verses show Noah's age during Bible events. I didn't show them, but Noah made sacrifices upon an altar to God; worshipping God in a time of gross sin. He was human and subject to the aging process.

I believe there is a prophetic reason why Enoch and Elijah were taken to heaven without seeing physical death. And... we will be witnesses of that reason.

    Genesis 6:8

But Noah found GRACE in the eyes of the LORD.

    Genesis 6:22

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

    Genesis 7:6

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

    Genesis 8:13

And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.

    Genesis 9:28

And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

    Genesis 9:29

And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

Mishael: 'Grace', means Noah had the unmerited favor of God. He didn't earn it.

Why did Noah die, he was so close to God!
  • Taylor Ellis - In Reply on Genesis 11 - 2 years ago
Because we are all different and we are all different colors pink, purple white, black we are all precious in his eyes. he did this because the people were all the same that's why he created whites blacks and Spanish. no matter what color or language we speak we are God children even the one who doesn't believe in him. he said that everything that breatheth let them worship his holy name, animals, and all he gave breath to us and I think we should thank him and worship him.

Gen, Chp 11, Verse 2: Someone might need to check the wording. the word "from" may not suppose to be there. They traveled eastward or east; not "from the east" I could be totally wrong though. I have checked other sources and I can say the base of the tower is still there east of the city in Shinar in a valley. But here again could be wrong. I suggest you check the wording and decide. Thanks for an easy to read KJV Bible and study guide software. It has helped me many times, just trying to give back.
  • Chris - In Reply on Genesis 11 - 3 years ago
In Genesis chapter 10, you get a full chapter detailing all the people that began to multiply after the Ark finally rested on Ararat. Then in chapter 11, we take a step back to see that all those came after Noah & his sons remained together in their journeyings until they came to the land of Shinar (in the Babylonian region). It was here that they decided to build a city for themselves & a tower as a huge symbol of unification. But we know the story, as the Lord confused their common language as this was in contradiction to what God planned that they should go out & fill the Earth. This confusion forced them to separate into groups of single language & spread out to other parts of the region. And so that place was called Babel.

    Shalom,

Thank you for your ministry, it's a blessing to me, I use your work every day and thank God for your talents being utilized for God's Kingdom and to reach people all over the globe with His Word, what a blessing!

My question is, does Genesis 11:10 mean that Shem was 98 years old when the flood occurred as according to Genesis 11:10 Shem was an 100 years old, and begat Arphaxad 2 years after the flood?

According to Gen 5:32 ... Noah was 500 years old : and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japhet.

According to Gen 7:6 ...Noah was 600 years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

Which would mean that the boys were 100 years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth or am I missing something?

Perhaps the 9 months in the womb and some other months while in the arc, which would add up to 2 years that are missing? Or how do I understand "begot" at the time of conception or at the time of birth? Please advise and thank you in advance,

    God bless you,

    Marta

God saw the end times at the beginning caused confusion amongst a united group that had planned to rebel against Him, the beginning of Antichrist. He still does it today. God help us be willing to learn from you that we will not miss heaven. Genesis 11 is an eye opener of what is to take place at the end of our life; the rebellious will inherit hell and the righteous will inherit eternity with God!

I believe that the Tower of Babel is the origin of the Antichrist. The World was "One". And then God came in to the picture and confused the languages of men, thus spread throughout the world. As each generation goes by, and we're talking centuries... until present day... Men have been / are working together as "unity" to become "One".... once again to create the New World Order by deception. But i pray, that when that time happens in these last days, I pray that me and my family will be taken up by Christ Jesus at the rapture event, and won't have to experience the short time tribulation period... of the system. Yes, Lord I believe that Christ Jesus is the one and only way, and who can save anybody and will bring to everlasting life anyone who believes in him.. Thy will be done oh Lord.

The idea is not to hoard cash, but use it regularly instead of the cashless system. If people use it , it will take longer to lose it. The future of eftpos is an implant into the body "hand" or facial recognition "the fore head" . If anyone submits to this voluntarily, they give their person to the world system and no longer to God. They will become enslaved and marked, easily manipulated and tracked, they will no longer be free.

Mishael - I agree and non GMO seeds are the way to go. What the Lord created is right and not what mankind / satan messes with and destroys. right now it is very difficult to find places that even have seeds for sale and non gmo also.

Hosstools has seeds in stock and you can ask them about gmo. anything that says Heirloom means non gmo. they have lots of heirloom products. My old sources for seeds are either sold out or only selling to commercial concerns.

Things are bad and shall get worse. Any nation that tolerates the church of satan in their midst deserves what she is going to get. The US military has chaplains for the church of satan. I suppose their "gospel" is just be yourself....
  • Mishael - In Reply on Genesis 11 - 3 years ago
    Bob,

I agree. Seeds do sound more valuable than gold or silver. It makes me wonder now, if it's possible to obtain non-gmo seeds? I'll have to check that out.

    Pond water purification machines.

It's going to be real hard for people to get medications they're going to need. We don't have the knowledge to look for plants that are medicinal. Folk medicine.

The other side of this is why not skip silly plans to survive the wholesale destruction of humans who refuse to worship Antichrist?

They're just living moment to moment.

People don't want to believe that God is going forth with end time plans. They just don't think about anything eternal.

I'm just praying that in heaven there will be no memory of all those that chose death, rather than life everlasting.

I guess the time to grieve is now. Maybe we'll be strong and preach Life to our families now.

It's hard to see crowds of hundreds of people rioting and know one day their voices will turn to weeping and regret. Too late to do anything.

The police that Antichrist employs won't care what their issues are. They'll have real bullets and use them. Those people are as blinded and deafened as the Jews that believe there is no way that God will abandon them to their choices. I believe the 144,000 will preach salvation and then that's the end of striving to save chronic unbelievers.

I want to be at the Wedding Supper of the Son of God! No more tears and painful heartache of loss. I want to hold my grandma's hand and my parents. My whole life has been defined by helping the helpless. My spirit yearns for release to live in joy and freedom.
  • Bob Hilt - In Reply on Genesis 11 - 3 years ago
Mishael, not to pick a fight or anything and you are right the antichrist can / will change the money.

in 1933 President Roosevelt made ownership of gold illegal. Prior to this the USA had legal gold coins and silver.

Silver coins were removed in 1965 and I remember them as a kid.

I bought 2 large candy bars for a silver dime. What do they cost today.

Yet can we eat gold and silver? They could make it illegal?

I suspect food seeds might be a better investment for the future.
