Wesley's Notes for Genesis 9:2

9:2 He grants them power over the inferior creatures. He grants, 1. A title to them; into your hands they are delivered - For your use and benefit. 2. A dominion over them, without which the title would avail little; The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast - This revives a former grant, #Gen 1:28|, only with this difference, that man in innocency ruled by love, fallen man rules by fear. And thus far we have still the benefit of it, 1. That those creatures which are any way useful to us are reclaimed, and we use them either for service or food, or both, as they are capable. 2. Those creatures that are any way hurtful to us are restrained; so that tho' now and then man may be hurt by some of them, yet they do not combine together to rise up in rebellion against man.

I see a lot of confusion on here about what happened with Ham. He is cursed for fornication, it is a sin to see your parents naked according to Leviticus 18:7. He is not cursed for incest, that is heresy. What would covering the mother do to fix the problem? Also, if that were the case, she would be in the midst of sin as well.

Verse 1: God again stated his purpose that the earth be filled with humans. God values human life.

Ham should have not told his brothers about his fathers nakedness, but just covered him and kept it to himself. He dishonored his father in his words and actions to God I guess and so was dishonored. It is always good not to gossip. Honoring our parents is important. Not just fathers, but mothers also.

    V. 19 -" ..... and of them ('them' referring to Noah's sons, not Noah) was the whole earth overspread". God doesn't mention Noah having any more children. Nor are we to 'speculate' on whether he did or not.

I do not understand v. 22 - nor do I have any tho'ts on it. But - I do know you cannot later read Lev. 20:11 and 'see' that this incest is the answer. One scripture has nothing to do with the other; there is no corroborating scripture to connect the two.

Leviticus 20:11 will make it very clear what Ham did and why Noah cursed the offspring. Shem and Japheth covered up their mother. "And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness" (The very idea that a son simply seeing his father naked would be that big a deal as to curse a grandson is ridiculous.)
