Wesley's Notes for Genesis 6:6

6:6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man upon the earth - That he had made a creature of such noble powers, and had put him on this earth, which he built and furnished on purpose to be a comfortable habitation for him; and it grieved him at his heart - These are expressions after the manner of men, and must be understood so as not to reflect upon God's immutability or felicity. It doth not speak any passion or uneasiness in God, nothing can create disturbance to the eternal mind; but it speaks his just and holy displeasure against sin and sinners: neither doth it speak any change of God's mind; for with him there is no variableness; but it speaks a change of his way. When God had made man upright, he rested and was refreshed, #Ex 31:17|. and his way towards him was such as shewed him well pleased with the work of his own hands; but now man was apostatized, he could not do otherwise, but shew himself displeased; so that the change was in man, not in God.

Discussion for Genesis 6

Ann; that is a false teaching! Cain murdered his brother because he rejected God's Word, and willfully omitted all reference of Christ having to come in the flesh, when he came to present himself to God. Therefore he was rejected, and so he murdered his brother for being good. The sons of God then were the children of faith, and the sacred line descended from Seth instead of Able whom Cain slew.
  • Ann
The sons of God were the fallen angels who fell from heaven, which took the form of human-like creatures, and married the daughters of men, and the giants (the Nephilim) were the result of this sinful act. Genesis 6:4-8. The male angels (sons of God) Job 38:7 - Job 1:6.

Genesis 7:13 tells us who went into the ark. Amen.

Gigi (cont.) When keeping in the context of the first chapters of Genesis up to that point it is clear that there is a distinct moral and spiritual divide in the earth between the godly seed of the sons of God after the line of Seth and the heathen children of men after Cain. By Noah's day there had evolved such a darkness of apostasy that no one could anymore be moved by conviction of the Spirit.

Gigi; "who were those giants?" Well, I've never found a completely satisfying answer to that, other than the Word itself just on its face. I think we have to assume they were freakishly large men, or "man-like" creatures. One great error however about them comes from MIS-reading the verse around it; which many think says that the giants were the offspring of the sons of God marrying unsaved women.
  • Gigi Maher
    who were those giants??
"That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose .... There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown"
