The Greek, pharmakeia, can also denote the casting of 'spells or incantations', along with as you mentioned, use of drugs as part of witchcraft & sorceries. Brother Mishael might be able to enlighten us if there is any history of such use of drugs/potions, whether in olden or modern days that he has learned. I wonder what they used, or concocted, to bring on their desired outcomes.

In classical Greek pharmakeia referred to the use of drugs whether for medicinal or more sinister purposes, e.g., poisoning. In the New Testament, however, it is invariably associated with the occult, both in Galatians [5:20] and in Revelation, where it occurs twice ( Rev 9:21; 18:23). English translations usually render pharmakeia as "witchcraft" (KJV, NIV) or "sorcery" (RSV, NEB). These words correctly convey the idea of black magic and demonic control, but they miss the more basic meaning of drug use. In New Testament times pharmakeia in fact denoted the use of drugs with occult properties for a variety of purposes including, especially, abortion.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. ( Ephesians 2:8-10)

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. ( Titus 2:13-14)

We know that grace through faith in Jesus Christ saves us, but also we are saved unto good works. So it's a matter of a proper order of first becoming a child of God and then walking worthy in obedience to God's will.

A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. ( Matthew 7:18-20)

For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. ( 1 Corinthians 3:11-15)

    God bless you brother Evanrod

The Church is the Body of Jesus Christ which is made up of sons and daughters of God. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the Sons of God. The word "churches" we use today is just the places Christian people come together at certain times. Further, these groups have different ideas, then we call them "denominations". Church-buildings and denominations are not in the Bible and are not important.

What is important is to hear the Gospel, have faith to believe, repent of our sin, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and get the Holy Spirit. That is all.

    Peace in Christ
  • Evanrod Nocalan on Galatians 5 - 3 years ago
why those who profess the faith alone concept to be saved have built their own churches with differing names where they conduct their so called fellowship. All of these are deeds or actions of faith, right? And they are teaching, just accept Christ and your faith alone can save you. So if a person does that - having faith alone in Christ - no need for him to join any denominations, right? In this connection, why God said that there are people who serve Him with their lips only but their hearts are not but are looking after their own benefits?

Please help me to answer this question thank you. God bless
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to find you a Church - In Reply on Galatians 5 - 3 years ago
This is a subject everyone tries to prove this day or that day.

The Bible also says, don't forsake gathering together. It didn't instruct a certain day.

In my evangelical experiences, it is more important to attend a Church that actually opens the Bible and teaches the scriptures.

I do not believe a Church that expounds on marriage counseling, parenting, being an active citizen in projects: not growing their lambs up into full grown sheep; to follow the Shepherd who is Jesus Christ. We have such a short time to help our children know who Christ is: before they have a public school try to beat it out of them. Parents are pastors too. Deuteronomy 11:19. The first churches were in homes.

The Bible is supposed to change lives; put life into the perspective of our Saviors Life and Ministry. Acts 2:42-47

Our lives will default back to simplicity if we turn off the tv and actually talk to each other. Refuse cell phones to teens till they can pay for it themselves and for the monthly service. It's not cruel. It teaches responsibility, good credit rating, budgeting time, balancing time to earn money, do their "jobs" to pay their bills. Life skills 101.

I have a hated sermon called: don't end up on the Dr Phil show. My Dad always told me "I'm doing this for your own good". Forcing me to learn car maintenance 101. I miss him so much. I taught it to my son and he was 21 when he bought his first house. He taught his 7 yr old to fix a leaking toilet last week.

Kids just want some of your time, you know? The rewards far outweigh the laundry waiting 1 day. They're so smart if you pour yourself into them. Kinda like Jesus did with his disciples.

My first solo street ministry ended with me telling a group of drunks they were going to hell. Later I was Dejected! The Lord said: are you done doing it your way? I was hearing him in my spirit! I said, Yes Sir!! My life has been sad. I met Jesus. It's been the best since then.

There is only way to heaven you must obey Acts 2:38! Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism. We must be baptized in Jesus name not sprinkled water on. We must be baptized in Jesus name. The name of the father is Jesus, the name of the son is Jesus the name of the Holyghost is Jesus and the Bible says these three are one. In Revelation John saw one one the throne.

Trying to find scriptural meanings and/or discussion regarding definitions and contextual differences pertaining to: transgression(s), sin(s), mistake(s), iniquity(ies), although I don't find mistake(s) in scripture. Thanks much.

Doris, God never signs off on any abuse. God is about the abundant life and a husband is supposed to love you like he loves himself. He clearly doesn't love himself. Any abuse is unacceptable! If you are being mistreated, you have the right to divorce your husband, ASAP!...The longer you stay, the longer the relationship will drain you of your self-esteem.

First off is he a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ?

Secondly Read Galatians with a spirit of prayer and ask the Lord for decernment. It's not gonna be as easy as looking at a verse and pulling it out of context. Really seek the Lord through prayer and rely on Him for guidance. Cast your cares on Him for He cares for us. It's that deep relationship with Him that matters most.

I am looking for 'abuse' in a marriage. Not physical abuse but mental/emotional abuse and if that is an activity that would justify divorce in a Christian marriage.
  • Fred scanlan on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
Being intimidated by others for your confidence in Christ should be expected, even today as it was then. Faith in christ is found in Him only. We should not judge one another based on a work righteous faith. Paul uses the word biting one another. How many times we offend one another? Being called to liberty in Christ , using this liberty to love one another, while being in Christ causing divisions within the church. It is impossible but offences will come. Some would find any reason to continue against Christ, or believe salvation is without the works of the law, who Paul claimed he was chief of, while leaders in the church still deny him!
  • Mae on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
I read all comments and critically analysed each one, I could not help but noticed no one actually admits to falling in any of these categories! As a serving Christian, I can describe myself as one with many flaws, even though I am seen to others as always doing the right thing.
After reading Galatian 5 I had to do a self-evaluation, where I use to blame others for their behaviour I am now thinking that I may have contributed to creating the problems based on my reaction or overzealousness, possible obsessive behaviour, pride or lacking self-control which can lead to provocation. these are contributing factors that cause conflicts amongst our family members & peers. let's pray Gal 5: 22- 25

LOVE is the key fruit here. The other 8 fruits ripples from the first fruit.
  • Sebastian on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
The 9 fruits mentioned are the fruits of the holy spirit. if we have the spirit of god living in us, we must give him the preeminence to reign over our life/body. we must not grieve ( ephesians 4:30) or quench (1 thes 5:19) him.

"the longer we serve him the sweeter he grows the more that we love him more love he bestowed"
  • Ivy Johnson on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
    Meekness, temperance:
The fruit of the spirit: although it consists of nine different words,
it is counted as one, and not many.
    Why is it that way?
When we begin to read what the fruit of the Spirit is,
Paul is not naming different kinds of Fruits, that the Spirit gives.
Instead he is describing the different characteristics of the grace that
    is working in us.
    Amen!

I use Galations 5:22 and 23, as a test for me, in relationships and experiences, especially when dealing with family. We can not lead, where we do not walk. As a radio operator calls in heavy artillery when the battle rages against us by the enemy of our souls, so must we remain in conscious prayer for our own responses and standing,to be effective in our service, as, Christian, to all.
  • Laroy on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
It exposes the lies we tell each other regarding the sins we commit. No sin is okay and another is wrong. Jehovah abhors all sin regardless of man's acceptance and practices! His doctrines will not change. Be you, drunkard, homosexual, liar, thief, pedophile, murderer or indulgent in other sins, you are against God and can not enter into heaven! People saying otherwise are fools for Satan!
  • Dana - In Reply on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
there was a between these statements. people run here and there looking, running well. but if you run the wrong direction, what hinders you? Satan leads us down the wrong path. truth leads us the right way.

scriptures the married women paster had mentioned, it was about giving 2 others building up the community that she lived in. also using her paychecks 2 help others so they can grow up. she was teaching 2 not think that she was above others in her community but she felt she was there 2 serve. she discussed every part of galatians how she used it to help serve her community.

My brother is going through the same thing that I went through in 2013. Although his addiction is slightly worse than mine was with a different drug, it s all the same. This chapter brings it all into perspective, with my new outlook on life.I hope my brother is able to push through with the help of his family and friends, Amen
  • Wackson zimba on Galatians 5 - 4 years ago
this a very wonderful scripture. nowadays, believers don't bear fruits because sin has centre stage their lives. we are living ungodly lives. how can God reign where there is sin. the is clear verse 25. if we live in the Spirit let us also also walk in the Spirit.
