Wesley's Notes for Galatians 5:17

5:17 For the flesh desireth against the Spirit - Nature desires what is quite contrary to the Spirit of God. But the Spirit against the flesh - - But the Holy Spirit on his part opposes your evil nature. These are contrary to each other - The flesh and the Spirit; there can be no agreement between them. That ye may not do the things which ye would - - That, being thus strengthened by the Spirit, ye may not fulfil the desire of the flesh, as otherwise ye would do.

People's Bible Notes for Galatians 5:17

Ga 5:17 The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, etc. The desires of the flesh and the Spirit are in conflict. They war within us. One would lead in one direction, and the other in another. So that ye cannot do the things that ye would. The Greek is not so strong as this. It implies that the two wills within us hinder us from doing as we would by their conflict.

Discussion for Galatians 5

How do we know its an Apple Tree, or an Orange Tree? Because of its fruit! How does God know that we are saved and really in the Good Tree? By the fruit! Not every one who says, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of God, but he that does the will of the Father. If we love Jesus we will necessarily also DO what He says. If we have His Spirit and grace really working in us, then we will reflect it!

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." A law is a rule or set of rules for good behavior which is considered right and important; a law is a natural process in which a particular event or thing always leads to a particular result. We do those things that ESTABLISH the rules of good behavior.
