Wesley's Notes for Exodus 33:12

33:12 Moses now returned to the door of the tabernacle, as an important supplicant for two favours, and prevails for both: herein he was a type of Christ the great intercessor, whom the Father heareth always. He is earnest with God for a grant of his presence with Israel in the rest of their march to Canaan. Thou sayst, bring up this people - Lord, it is thou thyself that employest me, and wilt thou not own me? I am in the way of my duty, and shall I not have thy presence with me in that way? Yet, Thou hast said, I know thee by name, as a particular friend, and thou hast also found grace in my sight, above any other.

Verse 19 is exceedingly instructive. "..and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy." We pray that God should look onto us with His mercy and grace.

I love this chapter and I believe that it refers to when Moses and Elias is talking with Jesus on mount transfiguration.God said that Moses couldn't see him and live but there was a rock.that rock is Christ.

V.23 - The Lord brought it back to me; I did know the meaning, but had forgotten. The 'face' of God is - the future. If Moses or we could see into the future - all the wars, famine, genocide, floods, famines, etc., - the enormity of it would kill us. His back parts we can see because they have already happened. Seeing the glory of the Lord is what He has done and will do. cont.

Everything God does - has a point. He didn't do v. 22 just to pass by Moses. In v. 23 God's 'back parts' was what He had done - before Moses, in the wa-a-ay distant past - that He wanted Moses to write down - starting the O.T. There was more of a point to vs. 22 than just 'passing by', but I don't know what it was; somebody ..... ?

The full glory of Jehovah God is too magnificent to behold. This explains why no man can see God and live.
