Wesley's Notes for Ephesians 5:19

5:19 Speaking to each other - By the Spirit. In the Psalms - Of David. And hymns - Of praise. And spiritual songs - On any divine subject. By there being no inspired songs, peculiarly adapted to the Christian dispensation, as there were to the Jewish, it is evident that the promise of the Holy Ghost to believers, in the last days, was by his larger effusion to supply the lack of it. Singing with your hearts - As well as your voice. To the Lord - Jesus, who searcheth the heart.

People's Bible Notes for Ephesians 5:19

Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms. Under the influence of the Spirit when together you will sing psalms, such as those of the psalmist. And hymns. Songs of praise. And spiritual songs. Songs which express spiritual emotions. We find Christian hymns in the church at a very early period. Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. While the lips sing, the heart must join in the melody by an uplifting to God. Too much singing in the churches is only of the lips.

Discussion for Ephesians 5

"This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church." Jesus taught the contentious Jews (John 8) that being Abraham's seed didn't make them Children; but those walking after the same Spirit that Abraham walked those are the true Children. So with respect to being Children of God by faith in Jesus Christ our Lord it is known what kind we are by the kind of behavior and character.

1 John 4:1-2 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: The Word of God will deliver us from evil. The Word is Alive.
