In the midst of all of the other heartfelt and pious comments, mine might seem silly, but perhaps someone with more knowledge than I of ancient customs might provide an answer. I read the entire KJv 35 years ago. I 've read some books several times since. Currently, I am translating St. Jerome 's Vulgate to improve my understanding of the bible and my Latin, and to keep my brain from filling with cobwebs. I use this online KJV as one check of my translation. This info just to let you know where I am coming from. So, both the Vulgate and the Hebrew but NOT the KJV clearly state that Potiphar was a eunuch. I do know that it was the quaint custom of many ancient cultures to perform this operation on male slaves intended for various jobs to eliminate one major distraction from their lives so they could focus their energies on their jobs. So, my question is, why does a eunuch need a wife? An ornament? Just to keep up appearances? Whatever the reason, it might go a long way to explain the behavior of Potiphar 's wife toward Joseph.... I would truly appreciate any information anyone has on this subject. At the very least, it would eliminate one of the minor things puzzling me.
