  • Ngozi Obinwa on Jeremiah 8:8 - 12 years ago
I was Totally shocked by NIV (and other Bible)translations of Jeremiah 8: 8 as compared with King James version (1984 ed.,).

    NIV:
8 How can you say, We are wise,
for we have the law of the LORD,
when actually the lying pen of the scribes
    has handled it falsely?

    King James:

8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
    ---------------------
First, I think the error arose from he (KJV)when it should be He (God).

Consequently the verse should literally read thus:

8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made He it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
    ----------------------

My modern English Translations will then read:

8 How can you say you are wise because you have the law of God ? Indeed Gods (written) law to you is in vain (useless) and the efforts of the scribes (in writing it) were also in vain.

8 How can you say you are wise because you have the law of God ? Indeed Gods law is mocked by you and the efforts of the scribes were therefore in vain.

    Or

8 Why do you boast you are wise simply because you have Gods Law? In fact Gods Law mean nothing to you and the scribes efforts (in writing it ) was a waste

    Or

8 Why do you boast you are wise simply because you have Gods Law? Honestly, Gods Law has achieved nothing with you and the efforts of the scribe in writing it was a waste
    ----------------------
As demonstrated in the whole Chapter 8 of Jeremiah, God was rebuking his people (the Jews) for not following the laws he laid down for them. In order not to repeat the whole argument as outlined by the chapter, God says their refusing to follow the laws He caused to be written down for them means that the writers (scribes) efforts are then in Vain.

God did not say that what the scribes wrote is wrong but that Jews do not follow the writings and thus the writings are in vain; of no use ; not yielding fruit, -in other words they scorn the writing and because of this, God is going to punish them.

PLEASE, PLEASE, what is happening to the Bible? Has SATAN infiltrated and corrupted the Bible beyond rescue? How can these men of ?God supposedly filled with the Holy Ghost be unable to translate simple clear passages like Jer 8:8 where the whole context is repeating the same message over and over again. I am totally FURIOUS with these mistranslations.

All these new translations are causing more HARM than good.

Before these Bible TRANSLATORS produce another version, I strongly suggest they put out a world call to all Christians to submit errors / misrepresentations they found in NIV / other Bible versions(via their Pastors) so that you don't create a bigger BLUNDER next time.
