Evangelist chautana the reason why God did not accept Cain 's offering had nothing to do with it being fruits. This was an offering different from a sacrifice. The bible says to bring the first fruits of your labour to the Lord, this can be anything. Cain was a farmer he brought his produce as an offering not a sacrifice, the bible makes a point of mentioning that Abel brought 'the firstling of his lambs and the fat theirof '. As it does not say the same of Cain he most likely did not give his first produce. Furthermore God had not yet put in the law of sacrifice so it does not apply here. Paul say if it were not for the law there would not be sin. So Cain could not have sinned that way as the law was not yet set. And as I said before this was an offering not a sacrifice and if it was a sin offering the bible would have said so. The bible also talks of grain offerings and really he would be an unworthy God if he rejected what Cain worked hard for on the grounds that it wasn 't a lamb. Pretty much a slap in the face and saying you should have been a herder.
