    Hello Madhatter57 and welcome to this site if you are new.

    The word "alms" means money, goods, etc. that are given to care for the needs of the poor and needy. These are different than tithe which is given to God and distributed to the priests. So, alms were an offering above and beyond the tithe in the O.T. systems and was voluntary but honorable to do. In the N.T. there is a good example. Paul was planning to return to Jerusalem and had asked the churches of Asia Minor and Macedonia to put together money for the church at Jerusalem because Jerusalem and the people around this city were having a famine and many believers were in need of food. Paul then collected these gifts of money and brought it with him to Jerusalem t give to James to distribute to those in need.
