After Jesus died for our sins on the cross, did He go to hell for the 3 days, He was in the tomb, before He resurrected?

Yes and no. Jesus went to a separate section called paradise, in which there was a huge gulf between hell and paradise. Paradise was most likely Eden, where the Old Testament believers in God went until the sacrificial works of Jesus were completed at Calvary. Jesus then went to retrieve the believers (graves were opened) with Him to Heaven for eternity.

I wished to elaborate as I have previously on this subject. The scriptures indicate what Christ did; while his body was in the grave and His Spirit went to the lower parts of the earth. First off; since He created all things and His work was finished when He died on the cross; He was certainly NOT suffering in hell. (Sorry the point is too important not to shout). Those who would proclaim such things are in grievous error. The scriptures indicate that He said to the thief on the cross "Today you shall be with me in Paradise." ( Luke 23:43). However; 3 days later scriptures indicate that captivity was made captive ( Psalm 68:18 says it best; it also is stated in Ephesians 4:8 and a few other places). Thus; the bodies of some saints after the Resurrection came out of their graves ( Matthew 27:52-3) and the souls of men now all go to heaven who are saved; while those lost only go to the torment section of Sheol. ( 2 Cor. 5:6). The message therefore was a declaration of victory; to the Nephilim who were bound up already for their particular sin of fornication with women ( 2 Peter 2:4) as well as to the rest of those human souls in darkness. See also Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27

This is somewhat similar to the message that will come out in the Tribulation. The Rapture may be hid to some; but the graves being opened up worldwide surely will NOT be able to be hidden. Clearly; by the sixth seal there will be no atheists. Thus; no Gospel message will be necessary to explain to the world that Jesus is Lord; but a declaration of the Kingdom about to appear on earth; and the judgments to come. In a way these events are characteristic of the end of each dispensation; when judgment is pronounced or at the very least the end of a given Kingdom or civilization when their transgressions come to the full ( Genesis 15:16).

    Texsis,

There is a place called Hades that Jesus went to for three days and three nights. And in Hades, there were two compartments, as we know from Luke Chapter 16.

The Old Testament saints were there on one side, and those who rejected were on the other side and were in torment.

So Jesus, when He dismissed His Spirit on the cross, He went down and proclaimed the victory. And when He rose from the dead, many of the Old Testament saints appeared, and they revealed themselves to many in Jerusalem.

According to 1 Corinthians Chapter 15, we know that Jesus revealed Himself to people for 40 days. At one time, 500 people, as witnesses to the resurrection of Christ.

Although I learned something from Luke, 16 I saw nothing of Jesus going to hell for the 3 days after saying "it is finished". I did however get an answer from elsewhere, thanks

Luke 23:46. " And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands ( God the Father is in heaven) I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost."

Some teach that based on interpretation of; Isaiah 42:7, 1Peter 3:18-19, Ecclesiastes 4:14-16, Psalms 142:7, Isaiah 53:7-12, Revelation 1:17-18, Matthew 12:38-45, Luke 11:29-32, Ephesians 4:8-10, Psalms 86:13, Acts 2:27,31, Psalms 16:10, but none of these are clearly stated nor defined so. Jonah 2:2,

    Luke 16:22-31,

I guess my question is why?

    Jesus has all authority: Luke 12:5, Luke 9:1, Mark 1:27, 1Corinthians 15:24, Matthew 28:18, Job 26:6, Psalms 139, Revelation 1:18,

    Revelation 20, 2Peter 2:4,

Let's not divide over these issues, James 3:6,

Hopefully these are helpful in your study

Hi dear Texsis, there is already a thread to follow here on this topic. Go there please. But in short, after His death, Jesus went to the realm of the dead and freed the prisoners who had gone before.

God bless u in Jesus name, love u in Christ. Luke 6:6-11
