Biblically speaking, if two people decide they want to stay together and commit to one another for life do they actually have to have a marriage certificate to make it legally binding as far as God is concerned? Why?

Thanks for the great replies. Just for the record I am NOT in a relationship. Nor am I planning to be in one. I once was happily married but apparently I was the only one. Husband left for greener pastures. The Lord is my Shepherd.

When Jesus met the woman by the well. John Chap. 4,, He told her thou hast had 5 husbands and the man you're shacked up with now is not your husband. She Said, I Percive You are a Prophet. He just read her emails, seen her Facebook profile. But there wasn't such a thing then. If you read the Bible it was always prevalent that you be married before relations in the Marriage, or no sex before marriage. When Mary the earthly Mother of Christ was conceived by The Holy Ghost.

The Bible said Joseph being a just man, a good, upright man married her. She was His Fiance, but now she is pregnant out of Wedlock. But God dealt with Him,and He knew She would be a outcast or even stoned.

Paul talking about Marraige said it is better to Marry than to Burn, burn what? To burn in lust, desire. And then he told The Church that Adulters, those who mess around on their spouses and Fornicators, those who have Sex outside of Marriage,,,shall not inherit,or enter The Kingdom of God.

So with all due respect, if you want a roommate, and you sleep on the couch or in another bed in a completely platonic relationship. But if not, then You need to bring This Relationship into The Blessing of God. I guarantee You, that You will be happier and more content. Just Knowing that What God hath Joined together,,, says it all. Amen

    Mikey Out. Oooooh Yeah!!!!!

in Romans 13:1 it says the powers that be are ordained by God. Those powers meaning, the government. Throughout scripture, we are admonished to obey the law. From Genesis to Revelations, we are told about law and what governs our hearts and minds. This being said, If the government doesn't recognize the marriage as being legit. Then it's not in the eyes of God.

Hi Donna, I think the better question is if two people are actually "committed" why wouldn't they want a marriage to legal and official? And if there's doubt and hesitancy then maybe they aren't as committed as they admitted. I think God's definition of marriage is a big deal and is supposed to be permanent. That's my opinion. God bless.
