    By what name was john baptizing?

    Reference;

    Mathew 28;18-19.

    And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

    Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, "baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost"

    Thank you.

    Hi Andrew. Just to answer your question, "By what name was John baptizing?" I assume you're speaking of John the Baptist. If so, he wasn't baptizing in anyone's name. His was the baptism of repentance ( Mark 1:4; Acts 13:24; Acts 19:4) & was an in-between baptism from the Jewish performance of baptism (which Jesse has well explained), to 'believers' baptism' (which is an identification with the death, burial & resurrection of Jesus Christ).

    The Jewish thought was simply of external washing prior to religious performances (Muslims also do this for that very reason, prior to their five daily prayer rituals) - the Christian belief is one of responding to an inward change. John's baptism was the 'connecting piece', bringing Jews to understand that there needs to be a washing not for the body as was previously done, but to show that it is actually a matter of the heart. And this was done by the "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight", in preparation of the arrival & ministry of the Messiah, Whom the Jews should have welcomed according to the prophecies that went before Him, but to their suffering & eternal doom, the they rejected & even had Him crucified.

    Precious friends, According To Scriptures, God Only has 'ONE' baptism, today, Under GRACE!

    Further, it is 'impossible' for The 'ONE' Baptism to be 'physical' water, Since IT Is The 'Spiritual' OPERATION Of God, inducting 'members' Into The 'ONE' Body Of CHRIST, Under GRACE! Ephesians 4:5 and 1 Corinthians 12:13 Please Be 'Richly' Encouraged!:

    Andrew,

    In verse 19, Jesus said to baptize in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. The reason why all three of the Godhead are mentioned here is because the Jews actually immersed or baptized three times. We do it once. But the Jews would dunk three times for baptism. They didn't know why. But Jesus is saying that when you immerse three times, one is in the name of the Father, one's in the name of the Son, and one is in the name of the Holy Spirit.

    Around the year 316 A.D., Constantine changed it. He said that if that's the way the Jews do it, and if that's the way Jesus told them to do it, then we are only going to immerse once, just to be different.

    So we dunk once in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And the Jews dunk three times. But that's why Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is used here. When you go to the book of Acts, they baptized in the name of Jesus. So now we have this big battle of the baptisms, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or "Jesus name only?" But you see, one is Jewish, and one is Gentile!
