The various translations of Prov 18:1 show that the one who separates himself in that context separates himself from sound wisdom, probably because it does not align with his own thinking/understanding. It thus means that in his desire to seek knowledge and understanding, he alienates himself from the crowd so he can weigh or juxtapose other wisdom for his best purpose. Hence, verse 2 calls him a fool who has no delight in understanding of good sense; he only wants to reveal what is in his heart to others.

Perhaps a parallel. Colossians 2:8 (KJV) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Thanks Steve. The word of the Lord God is lamp unto my feet and light unto my path. May his wisdom continue to increase for his children. Amen.
