    I believe that Jesus answered this very well with the parable of the good Samaritan, Luke 10 verses 25 to 37

    also James chapter 2 and Matthew chapter 5,6,7, Beatitudes and sermon on the mount,

    Luke 10:25

    "And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

    Luke 10:37

    "And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise."

    James 2:26

    "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
