The breath of life, from God into Adam ( Gen 2:7), became Adam's own spirit.

The Hebrew word "naphach", which is translated as "breathed", can mean breathed or to blow into, or to inflate. The Hebrew word "neshamah", which is translated as "breath", refers to vital breath of inspiration, and is also translated as "spirit" in other Old Testament verses such as in Proverbs 20:27, which states "The spirit ("neshamah") of a man is the candle of the Lord". From the meanings of these Hebrew words, the phrase "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life", from Genesis 2:7 can be restated as "blew into his nostrils the spirit of life". We know Adam's spirit - the breath from God, is what gave him life. Another words, Adam's spirit entering his body from God's breath (or "spirit"), started his heart to beat, and then, Adam's spirit flowed into his bloodstream, causing Adam to become a living soul ( Gen. 2:7). As you can tell from my explanation, God breathed Adam's spirit into him, and, as a result, Adam's soul was created. Some feel that this verse merely says that Adam came to life, but let's take a closer look. How do I know his spirit entered his bloodstream? That word "soul" is translated from the Hebrew word "Nephesh". There is another reference in the Bible, at Leviticus 17:11, which states: For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Another reference is at Deuteronomy 12:23, which also indicates that "the blood is the life". However, in both of these verses, it is also the word "Nephesh", which is, in fact, translated "life", instead of "soul", as it's translated in Genesis 2:7. In Deuteronomy 12:23, God is telling Moses not to allow the people to eat the blood of animals, because "the blood is the soul". Leviticus 17:11 declares that "the soul of the flesh is in the blood".
