I don't understand why God sent a messenger to warn Joseph of the impending coming of Herod's men and didn't do the same for the parents of the children murdered on that unfortunate night.

Jeremiah 15-18 Prophesy
15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. (Killed by Herod)
16 Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
Matthew 2:13-18; the event as foretold by Jeremiah:
13 And when they (the 3 Kings) were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
14 When he arose, he took the young child (Jesus) and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, Jeremiah saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
Comment: it was a prophesy foretold hundreds of years prior. All of Gods prophesies will be fulfilled; if He tells it to a prophet. Note: the slain children went to heaven that day.

I had heard in the past, around age 2; which I tend to believe. It would've been very difficult to go those distances with a newborn infant.

Herod the King was known as "Herod the Great," and was made King by the Romans in the year 43 BC Historians tell us that his death occurred approximately 4 BC According to Matthew Henry's commentary on the book of Matthew, page 10, Christ was born in the 35th year of Herod the Great's reign. According to Albert Barnes' commentary on the book of Matthew, King Herod the Great died in his 37th year of reign. The best chronologers have supposed that Herod died somewhere between two and four years after the birth of Christ, but the particular time cannot now be determined; nor can it be ascertained at what age Jesus was taken into Egypt. It seems probable that He was between one and two years old-based upon the account of Herod's order to kill all the children two years and under.
