Hi Annette. I think you're referring to 2 Esdras & the other Apocryphal books. The apocryphal books were readily available but not allowed into the Scriptures for four centuries after the Church's formation. But they were read previously: some accepted them as part of the Scriptures & others purely for historical value.

When the KJV was being translated (i.e. the 1611 version), these books were not included within the Old Testament framework, as the bibles that used the dubious Alexandrian (Vaticanus & Sinaiticus) manuscripts for translation did; but the KJV translators, using the 'Received Text' manuscript added them between the Testaments. This action signified that they still had value but were not considered a part of God's Word. The reasons for doing this are several, but the important ones are: neither the Jews, nor the Lord Jesus & His apostles gave them any sanction; they were not written in Hebrew or Aramaic; errors were found in them, both historical & doctrinal (such as praying for the dead, of sinless perfection, magical incantations, & other immoral practises).

The Old Testament Apocryphal Books are given here on KJBO Site for knowledge about them & for interest sake - I would hope that the reader would give due diligence when reading them for they are not accepted as part of the Canon of Scripture.

Is 'Wisdom of Solomon' 1:16 speaking about death? Is it referencing verses 12 & 13?

Hello Yakima. The Bible doesn't specifically record that Solomon repented of his many sins; but then again, the Bible doesn't always give us every detail of someone's life, especially if the repenter has chosen not to record it or there were no witnesses to it. Only God knew Solomon's heart, as He does each one of us, so whether we stand or fall, we do so before God alone & under His Judgement.

However, in Ecclesiastes 12:13,14, we read Solomon finally expressing: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." Maybe, this is the only (small) evidence of a man who has realized his errors in life & his life was always exposed before a Just & All-seeing God.

Wisdom of Solomon 1:12-13, it seems he's saying when we error in life, maybe possibly "mess up big time" big errors. Don't seek death "suicide" yes I think it could mean anything with your own works, hands that ultimately causing destruction. Wisdom of Solomon 1:16 seems to confirm what you're thinking.

The HOLY Spirit seems to have already given you that, hopefully it is just helpful confirmation

Verse 12 chapter 1 Solomon. I'm unsure what to make of this. The error of your life. Seek not death understood but error of life what does this mean? In addition put not destruction with the works of your hands meaning don't harm, steal or use to hurt yourselves or others? Is this kind of what verse is trying to deliver to reader?

    Thank you,

  • Alex - In Reply on Wisdom of Solomon 1 - 2 years ago
Hiya Manuel, In my opinion RIGHTEOUSNESS is nothin short OF BEING INCORRUPTIBLE OF SATANS POWERS I.E. OUR CARNAL MINDS IS SATANS SEAT. Ya remember Jesus said outta of the hearts of man proceeds all manner of evil. And that is y we must be bornagain of an incorruptible seed even by the words of God etc this corruptible is gonna put on incorruption and this mortal is gonna put on immortality ,We are gonna be changed in that instant .
  • Chris - In Reply on Wisdom of Solomon 1 - 2 years ago
Hello Manuel. As far as a dictionary definition is concerned, 'righteousness' is the quality of being morally right or justifiable. However, when it comes to its use in the Bible, we see another type of Righteousness.

On the one hand a person who does not have God is his life or in his thoughts, can deem himself righteous (morally right by his own or society's standards) based on his understanding & calculations. And if he is sincere, his conscience would be appeased by his 'high' moral & ethical behaviour. But not before God!

If we look at Righteousness in the Bible (& there are many references), we can just take one verse out of it: e.g. Philippians 3:9: "And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith". In this verse, Righteousness is the same word in Greek for whether it is generated by man or God. The Apostle Paul is saying that he, once upon a time, deemed himself a righteous person based on his obedience to the Law. No doubt, he was a 'good' person & strived hard to please God. But, he says, God was not pleased with him. Because there was another Righteousness that was far higher & more purer than what he could muster up.

So when we read of God's Righteousness in Christians or that which we should strive for, then we see that it's not some goodness from ourselves, but what God has done through His Son for us - i.e. it is God Who makes us righteous (a Divine Work & a Divine Approval). By the virtue of Jesus' Death for us, we are declared righteous when we come in faith: our hearts & consciences have been cleansed from sin & accusations, & we now have a right standing before God. However, we must walk in that righteousness ( 1 Timothy 6:11) & if we should stray, we don't lose our standing before God, but can expect the Father's Hand of guidance or correction so that we begin to behave as His children & live according to our high calling.

Others here have given you some lovely Scriptures on Wisdom & advice. However, I suspect that you might be thinking of a biblical book that is not found in the KJV Bible. This would be the Wisdom of Solomon which is what is considered an Apocryphal Book, i.e. a book (of which there are many) that was deemed unworthy to be included in the canon of Scripture.

If you need to look at this book, then this Website provides it (& others), under the Tab "More" and then click on 'Standard KJB Apocrypha'. These apocryphal books did not meet the standards set by those who formed the Canon of Scripture & even the Jews, though accepting of many of their written & oral traditions, held doubts over these apocryphal (= hidden) books as authoritative.

Simply put using the Bible translation of the NLT...

James 1:5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

Proverbs 8 is an excellent chapter regarding wisdom. Jesus said in John 14:6,"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the father but by me." He is truth. He is wisdom. If you want wisdom, ask our Father! Christ is so gracious to answer our prayers!

Here is a beautiful passage with wisdom speaking This is from the King James Bible. Proverbs Chap9 is about wisdom too

    Wisdom's Call: Proverbs chapter 8.

    Proverbs 8:1-4

1.Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?

2.She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.

3.She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.

4.Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man....

    Proverbs 8:22-36

22.The Lord possessed me (Wisdom) in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

23.I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

24.When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

25.Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

26.While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

27.When he prepared the heavens I was there: when he set a compass on the face of the depth:

28.When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

29.When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment:

when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

    30.Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

31.Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

32.Now therefore hearken unto me O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my my ways.

33.Hear instruction and be wise, and refuse it not.

34.Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

35.For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

36.But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Good day my brothers and sisters,

As many do not read the Apocrypha books, as they are not included anymore in the KJV Bible, there is much wisdom and truth in them. I just want to post a couple verses for you all I was reading the other night. I am very thankful we have access to them on this site for us to go through.

Wisdom of Solomon 1:1-7 Love righteousness, ye that be judges of the earth: think of the Lord with a good (heart,) and in simplicity of heart seek him.

2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not; and sheweth himself unto such as do not distrust him.

3 For froward thoughts separate from God: and his power, when it is tried, reproveth the unwise.

4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter; nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin.

5 For the Holy Spirit of discipline will flee deceit, and remove from thoughts that are without understanding, and will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in.

6 For wisdom is a loving spirit; and will not acquit a blasphemer of his words: for God is witness of his reins, and a true beholder of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue.

7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world: and that which containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice.

Wisdom of Solomon 1:11 Therefore beware of murmuring, which is unprofitable; and refrain your tongue from backbiting: for there is no word so secret, that shall go for nought: and the mouth that belieth slayeth the soul.

Wisdom of Solomon 1:22-24 As for the mysteries of God, they knew them not: neither hoped they for the wages of righteousness, nor discerned a reward for blameless souls.

23 For God created man to be immortal, and made him to be an image of his own eternity.

24 Nevertheless through envy of the devil came death into the world: and they that do hold of his side do find it.

To reply to Rev Dr Peter Djabeng Question on Wisdom of Solomon 1: Solomon fell victim to females because of his

struggle with his flesh. His father David also had a weakness for females. This did not take away from the fact that

Solomon is the wisest to live and that God still granted him this wisdom, for Solomon was righteous and loved God and

was given a gift of wisdom, as God gives all of us gifts. We are humans and are flawed. God knows this. Be encouraged.
  • Rev Dr Peter Djabeng on Wisdom of Solomon 1 - 3 years ago
If Solomon was wise why than he fell in the hands of women.
