    ...cont. Pt. 3

After some discussion and expressing that they would like to return home to Midian, Hobab decides to go with the Israelites after all. How good this is-to go with YHWH and not turn back to the old ways, the old "home", according to your own reasoning and desires. Go with God! He is the way, the truth, and the life! And Jesus has gone before us to prepare a place for us!

The last part of this chapter is the departure from Mt. Sinai after spending a year there and traveled three days. Whenever they begin to go, Moses proclaims this prayer: "Rise up, LORD; let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate they flee before thee.

And when they rested, Moses proclaimed this prayer: "Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel." Moses prayed the same pray each time they would go on and each time the came to rest.

I think it is important for us to begin and end our days with prayer to God in similar fashion as Moses did. We can have our own words to ask God to scatter enemies before us as we start the day and for God to stay with us through the night as well as the day.

After three days of travel, they came to the wilderness of Paran. I don't know how far this was, but I can't imagine that this large group could travel more than 20-30 miles in one day, needing to stop necessary things, such as meals, and sleep at night.

If anyone has info on the distance, I would appreciate that.

The Israelites were finally on the move nearer to the Promised land after spending a year at Sinai to receive and agree to the covenant YHWH set before them. They needed time to learn the Law and to adjust their life to the routine of the tabernacle services of Aaron and the priests. They needed Moses' instructions. They needed to instruct their children. This all took time and a year is hardly a long time to do all of this, it seems. But God determined it was time to move on and live the life He has set forth for them.

We, too, need to move on to maturity.

NUMBERS CHAPTER 10-PUTTING GOD FIRST AND LETTING HIM GO BEFORE US TO LEAD US

This order of procession was necessary for several million people to proceed in an orderly, safe, and most important, obedient way. No one was to run ahead or take a side route or go off exploring. But it was essential to let the LORD be the only guide, submitting to His authority and wisdom without objection, half-hearted obedience, grumbling, or doubting His will.

We, too, should be careful to submit ourselves to the lead of God in us and in the truth of His word, and in the godly counsel He send to us to give us guidance and help. Being surrendered to God whole-heartedly is tough to do, if I may be honest. But as we grow in faith and love of Him we can live surrendered to Him more and more of our time and in more and more circumstances.

Israel's safety and the successful arrival at the promised land was completely dependent on YHWH. It was wise of them to remember this.

We have a Promised Land to come to also, the New Heavenly Jerusalem that Abraham looked forward to arriving at (He. 11:13-16) This chapter in Hebrews speaks about the faith that God is desiring for us to have in Him. In this chapter we can know what type of faith we need to have to please God (vs.4-6); the type of faith that will lead us into obedience to God (vs. 7-12); this same faith that gives us the sureness of heaven as our inheritance according to God's promises (vs. 13-16); faith that causes is to believe God's promises (vs. 17-30); and tenacious faith to overcome trials, troubles, and hardships as the saints did (vs. 31-40).

Before setting out from Mt. NUMBERS CHAPTER 10

In this chapter, YHWH gives Moses instructions for how to use the two trumpets He tells Moses to have crafted.

    They are used to:

-Call the whole congregation to appear before YHWH before the tabernacle entrance

-Call the chiefs/prince of each tribe to meet with Moses before the tabernacle entrance

-Sound the alarm in times of danger or war

-Announce the morning and evening sacrifices, and other religious feasts, new moons, and rites

-Announce it is time to pack up and move with YHWH in the cloud/pillar going before them

-Announce when it is time to stop and make camp and rest

The priests are to be the ones to blow the trumpets. It is their duty alone. The blowing of the trumpets was to be an important aspect of their religious life as well as corporate life as a nation.

I love how Matthew Henry relates the blowing of the trumpets with the speaking forth of the Gospel, that people may hear and believe; that believers will be gathered together by the Gospel to worship and fellowship.

The Chapter then speaks about how the camp is to break up and follow YHWH in the pillar/cloud. There is a specified order for the tribes to align behind the presence of God to set out towards the promised land. The ark of the covenant goes first carried by the designated Levites for that task. Then, four tribes, with Judah heading up the ranks. Following these comes the group of Levites assigned to carrying all the curtains and boards, and such for the tabernacle. Next, four more tribes come behind the tabernacle. Then comes the Holy of Holies and all of its furnishings carried by the High Priest and designated Levites. Then the rear is taken up by four more tribes. This order was to used every time they broke camp and began to go forward at the command of Moses.

Moses knew that it was time to move one because the glory of the Lord would rise up above from the tent of meeting and then take the first place in the procession in the pillar of fire and cloud.

Yes JRR, the word 'flesh' can be taken to apply to only mankind; but the Bible does speak of 'other' flesh. As the Apostle Paul referred to this in 1 Corinthians 15:38,39: "But God giveth it (i.e. the seed by God that contains the necessary constituents to form a particular organism), (gives it) a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body. All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds." So, I believe that Genesis 6:18-20, speaks of the various categories of 'flesh' & not to the many tribes & families that exist as human beings.

And back to the Kenite origins. I have seen opinions that indicate that the Kenites descended from Cain, hence not all flesh were destroyed by the flood. And yet, we get an example in Judges 1:16 indicating that Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, was a Kenite. And then in Numbers 10:29, Jethro is referred to as Raguel (also called 'Reuel' in Exodus 2:18), as a Midianite. What would you make of this? We know that it is the same man, Jethro, that is referred to, but can we assume a connection between the two families (Kenites & Midianites)? If there is and we go back to the immediate descendants of Noah's sons, we can follow the descendency from Shem through to Terah to Abram to Midian (through Keturah): Genesis 10:21-31; Genesis 11:10-32; Genesis 25:1-4 (here, we see Midian born to Abraham through Keturah, of whom (Midian), Jethro is connected to. If Jethro is also recorded as being a Kenite, there must be another family line coming through Midian (maybe through a daughter, not mentioned (only sons) in Genesis 25:4).

So, it appears that we must be open to the possibility that the Kenites were not from Cain (as much as a similarity exists in those names), but could have come through the descendants of Shem & the Abraham.

Perhaps for some of the Israelites, their obedience did lead to trust in, at the very least, the providential provision of the Lord God YHWH.

    . . . AND as should our unwavering belief in the Son of God YHWH - Jesus Christ who resides in our lives/hearts and minds; ie. human tabernacle /sanctuary,;

ALLOW, the Holy Spirit (the cloud/fire), to LEAD US WHEN AND WHERE, ACCORDING to the will of the Father; while we are in trust and obedience of His voice within our own selves.

And STILL yet he KNOWS - - -

WHERE WE, the redeemed go and are going; IF, we are determining to allow the Holy Spirit to LEAD in each and every wilderness of each and every individual life! . . .

SO THEN: when ordained changes are upon us; say

vs.35."Rise up, LORD and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee." and when it is over; say:

vs.36..."Return, O LORD unto the many thousands of Israel"

Hi karla. That's a good question & to add to the confusion, I'll throw in Numbers 10:29.

In Exodus 2:18, we read his name as Reuel & this means "friend of El (God)". This was very likely his given name.

In Exodus 3:1, Jethro (or, Yithro) is from the word, 'Yether', meaning 'his excellence'. So it seems that Jethro is the same person as Reuel, but Reuel was his given name & Jethro may have been a secondary name or honorific title that others might have called him by. As an example from the New Testament, we read of Simon who was also known as Peter ( Matthew 4:18); again known by two names (Simon, Luke 22:31; Peter, Matthew 8:14; Simon Peter, John 13:6).

Then in Numbers 10:29, some believe that Hobab is yet another name for Reuel/Jethro, adding to the confusion, and so several opinions have been given to interpret that 'anomaly'. However, I see it simply as: that Hobab was Reuel's (or Raguel's) son, as Raguel (Reuel) was Moses' father-in-law. This type of family tree descriptions can also be found in many other passages, including 1 Chronicles 5:14, Nehemiah 11:7.
  • Chris - In Reply on Numbers 10 - 1 year ago
Apparently so, DWL. Raguel is another spelling of 'Reuel' (as in Exodus 2:18). Hobab was Moses' brother-in-law.

Did Aaron and Moses have the same father?

In the Book of Exodus, Amram (/mrm/; Hebrew: , Modern: 'Amram, Tiberian: Amrm, "Friend of the most high" / "The people are exalted") is the husband of Jochebed and father of Aaron, Moses and Miriam.

They were Hebrews, so they'd be Jewish.

Numbers 10:29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.

Is Raguel the Midianite also Jethro?

    Hi Anthony,

As Bro Dan stated, there have been several threads on this subject in the past few weeks. I encourage you to go to past pages and find the threads to read. Hopefully, you will find the answers you are seeking.

Other than this recommendation, I just want to ask, which of the 10 commandments do you not want to obey out of love for Christ? For me, because of the grace that has brought me salvation, I am a new creation in Christ and the Spirit lives in me. So, because God first loved me, I love Him. And because I love Him, I want don't want to disobey any of the 10 commandments nor anything I know is sinful. However, I still sin and turn to God for forgiveness, which He freely gives me. I love our Lord so much that I do not want sin to come between Him and me any time. But when it does, I can be confident that He cleanses me from all sin when I confess to Him.

This is my approach to the 10 commandments and any moral law given by God in the Bible.

    Anthony.

    Part 2.

    The rest I mentioned in part 1 " Colossians 2." you see Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, WHICH WAS CONTRARY TO US, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

TRUSTING IN CHRIST IS THAT REST.

In Hebrews it gives a distinction between the Jews entering Gods rest and those who trust in Christ. "The Church".

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

""For unto "US" was the gospel preached, as well as unto "THEM": but the word preached did not profit "THEM", not being mixed with faith in "THEM" that heard it.""

For "WE" which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and "THEY TO WHOM IT WAS FIRST PREACHED" entered not in because of unbelief:

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

For if Jesus had given "THEM" rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Hebrews 4:1-10.

Israel will enter into that rest as a nation during the Millennium.

    God bless.

    Hi Anthony.

    Part 1 of 2.

The way you asked the question, "Does the ten commandments apply to all including gentiles?" I would say, yes.

The next question would be, did the 10 commandments slay us all as Paul mentioned in Romans 7:8-9. I would say yes. Because no one has been able to keep the law. Even the greatest 2 Commandments is out our reach without being born again.

Mark 12:29-31. This is a love we can't produce without the Holyspirit being present. It's a fruit of the spirit, and all the law hangs on it.

Galatians 5:14. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Romans 13:10. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

This is what baptism mentioned in Romans 6 is all about. "Not the outward profession we do in water but the inward identification of the Spirit." which has much to say about the sabbath.

In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

    And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

    Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Colossians 2:11-17.

    Hi Anthony,

These topics are discussed regularly here. While you are here on this discussions page, you can see a Tab entitled "Discussion by Topic", upper right area, hit the tab and then you will see a list of topics. You can see Sabbath, Commandments, etc.etc.

I understand your concern with getting salvation advice today it can be very misleading. I would suggest that you read and study the bible scripture yourself, pray for Guidance from God, and His Holy Spirit, and participate on this type of forum to ask questions, and learn and grow spiritually. Your time and effort will pay off for you!

    God Bless.

Does the ten commandments apply to all including gentiles? According to the ten commandments the 4th cmmandment sabbath day be observed. But nearly 99 percent of the churches observe the frist day of the week Sunday which is not in the scripture. One most respected Bible preacher/teacher the ten commadment only applied to the Jews until the cross Lord Jesus died on the cross. Yet John 14 Jesus said if you love me keep my commandments. How do we reconcile which is which? As you know the 7th day adventist keep the the 4th commandment. But according to the highly respected preachers/teachers the Adventist doctrine is not correct. I have experienced this is one example most protestant church preachers in my opinion they do not seem to know the bible at all which described simillarly in the Hosea " my people are destroyed due to lack of knowledge". The preacher explains simply the prophecy is on schedule the Old Testament to the Cross, the church age, the tribulation/the rapture, and the millenium makes a great deal of sense unlike other the majority of preachers evangelical/protestants in my oipnion one cannot learn the bible correctly, that is, they do not seem to know the bible at all just circling around meaning Jesus said the blind cannot lead the blind because they do not see. More significantly the book of Hosea described my people are destroyed due to the lack of knoweledge.

    Nick,

" I may possibly be condemning my wife when my heart desires to preach conviction of sin instead. "

I was saved before my wife, I see your dilemma. Preach has a connotation that doesn't imply example. I recently heard the saying, "people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." When you both are before God's word, avoid your commentary and allow God's word to be the focus of her attention. In God's good time he does the saving, not you and your preaching. In this case I believe "actions speak louder than words." Loving your wife is a commitment not based on feeling. Meet her needs which are your responsibility and trust God to be at work on her needs that are his. I will be praying for you both.

"How may I discuss the what I'm understanding in the bible" As unsaved, she isn't the person to discuss those matters with, but ask God to provide that person or means to help you reflect on what you see in scripture, such as this site.

My wife was saved sometime after reading a gospel tract I had left with her. She was alone and holding our just delivered firstborn son in her hospital bed. God brought to her mind John 3:16 and then she thoroughly understood it's meaning. She immediatly called me to say she was saved, and that was perhaps three/four years after me getting saved. I worked at that hospital and was saved during work hours while on the rooftop, no more than forty feet from where her bed was. I was also born in that hospital, so I was born and born again there.

Having saved you, God will never leave or forsake you. Grow in his graciousness and thank him for his mercies.

Welcome to the family of God & it's so heartening to read that you're distressed about your wife's spiritual condition & actually doing something about it. Our mission field is first found in the home.

Can I assume that your love for each other is very real & that your wife knows this as you share from the Bible with her? And the "guilt & sorrow" she feels, is it because of the Spirit's convicting her heart of sin or because of the way you're presenting the Gospel to her? I say this, as you sense that your manner of presentation may be condemnatory & hurtful.

If she genuinely feels that the Word, as presented, is showing her the depth of her sin & estrangement from God, then this sorrow can only be of the Spirit. When one is convicted of sin, having God's displeasure, & hell as our destiny, that person needs to be led further towards repentance & seeking God for forgiveness. Is this her state? If so, let her open up to the Lord in her own words & in tears, that she may know that Divine forgiveness & newness of heart.

But if she is only troubled by your remarks, or your emphasis & condemnation for her failures, then I agree, you would need to take a more softer, understanding stance, as we all were once cast under God's Mercy & His gentle dealing with us. She is your wife & together, a single loving unit of humanity before God. She not only has the witness from the Word, but also by your life, behaviour, & heart's longing for her to come to saving faith. Only the Holy Spirit can bring conviction in a person & it's the same Spirit that gives faith to believe & a new birth in Christ. As you read those Scriptures that point to one's inherent sin & our impossible efforts to escape its rewards, you need to identify yourself to her as, "I was once that man".

Read the Scriptures together slowly & carefully - ask each other what they mean & how they apply. If she has questions that you feel you can't answer, then you both will need pastoral help, or even write here.

    Nick,

Welcome to the family of God. Glad that you are in The Word. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." 2Ti 3:16-17 (KJV)

doctrine, the truths about God, man, sin, salvation etc.

reproof, pointing out the things we are thinking, saying and doing that is sin

correction, how to turn from our sin

instruction in righteousness, how to live to please and bring glory to God

I'm baffled by what's going on with Numbers 10 that's troubling your wife. If you want your wife to love God and share your joy, why don't you try reading The Gospel of John together or maybe she would read it herself. When someone is close to you, like a wife, brother, daughter etc, it's kind of dicey to preach to them. They need to see you living out your love for Jesus before they hear you preach to them. There may be times when those close to you ask a question. Peter says, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:" 1Pe 3:15 (KJV)

Rather than saying, "You need to repent" and so forth, think about personalizing what you're saying like, "I know that I'm a sinner and I read in the Bible that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and that includes me. But Jesus died for my sins so that I won't have to suffer for my sins in hell. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. I've repented of my sins and trusted Jesus to save me. You can too." But The Word need to be planted and watered. Be patient. Pray. Live a Godly life before her. Serve your wife. "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;" Eph 5:25 (KJV)

Hey everyone, I am a new born Christian that has found that I may possibly be condemning my wife when my heart desires to preach conviction of sin instead. I'm afraid that I may be doing condemnation when my wife and I are discussing about the bible which often leads her to feeling guilty and in sorrow, rather than peace in coming to Christ.

How may I discuss the what I'm understanding in the bible without acting in condemnation, and instead act more in conviction. I do not want to do the devils work and make my wife depressed with Christianity, which I feel I often do. Can someone please tell me how to discern this and bring light on to how to properly preach about what the bible says without condemning my wife.

    Sacha,

"about your own faith and salvation" "how you feel about God"

Your own faith is what you trust to be true. Salvation is a plan that God has revealed in his word.

Sometimes people use the word feel in place of understand. In talking to other people it is always easier if you are explaining what you understand. How about you telling me what you understand to be the way God saves people. Of course you "don't have to", but Jesus has explained that "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." If what you have is of God, he wants you to shine, and not be uncomfortable or unable to talk about it.

Its not always easy to put into words how you feel about God ,Jesus and the Truth about your own faith and salvation ,some people find it easier than others ,for me its a very personal thing ,often people ,usually atheists ,ask me about it in a very challenging or confrontational way and they dont get one word out of me ,i can tell they interprit my silence as some sort of victory for themselves ,even among other believers i prefer to keep my chat light ,my faith has been a long time developing and is most precious to me ,i dont feel the need to explain it or justify it im just very very thankfull that God has allowed me a measure of understanding and He has allowed me to know that i am never and have never been without Him .

Read those verses given there & if you don't understand anything, please write again so that we can explain it to you. It is your full belief in what God has done for you that gives you salvation & NOT by what you can do for God. We can never do anything that could cause God to forgive us - He could only forgive us on His Terms & that is, His Son gave His Life in your place so you could be forgiven. Think deeply on these things & follow through with a true repentant heart before God. He will hear your cry to Him & He will forgive you.

John 6:37: "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." You can rest on that Promise directly from Jesus to you.
