The context of Matthew 23:9 tells us that referring to one's biological father as "father" is not what Jesus is speaking about.

In Matthew 23:1-12, Jesus is denouncing the Jewish scribes and Pharisees for rejecting Him as their Messiah, in particular for their hypocrisy in elevating themselves above others with titles such as "teacher" and "master." The Jewish teachers affected those titles because they supposed that a teacher formed the man or gave him real life. They sought, therefore, to be called "father," as if they were the source of truth rather than God. Christ taught that the source of all life and truth is God, and no one ought to seek or receive a title that properly belongs to Him. No one should be as revered as God is.

This denunciation is equally relevant today. In no way should any person look up to, follow, or elevate a human leader in any religious or church organization above Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Head of the Church, which is His body. He alone is the author of our salvation, source of comfort in difficulties, and strength to live the Christian life. He is the only One to whom our prayers should be directed. No one else has the right to say, "Look to me to meet your spiritual needs." Jesus' warning against calling men "father" is a caution against ostentation, pride, and hypocrisy.

Roman Catholics call their priests "father," and the Pope is the "holy father." Abbots take their title from the Aramaic word abba, which means "father." This is clearly unbiblical. The priest as "father" is problematic. In the case of "holy father," there is no doubt this title is unbiblical. No man can take on the title of "holy" anything, because only God is holy. This title gives the Pope a status that is never intended for any man on earth.

It is refreshing to read the discussions on this site. A little on me, who I am and what I am doing.

I making notes on a study I am doing and moved Matthew 24 to the beginning. The study began years ago Matthew 5-7, the Sermon on the Mount and expanded from there to here.

When taking course 50 years ago I was required to us the American Standard Version, not because of the different language, but for the wide outer margin. I decided to use desktop publishing and now have this study in the KJV with a 2 1/2" margin on the right.

    The Matthew Henry Commentary outline

Christ foretells the destruction of the temple. (1-3)

The troubles before the destruction of Jerusalem. (4-28)

Christ foretells other signs and miseries, to the end of the world. (29-41)

    Exhortations to watchfulness. (42-51)

The question I now have is "What does Jesus say about those who spend so much time attempting to define the date for the End Time?" Jesus has told us that we are not to know WHEN. He has also told us not to concern ourselves about this, and to only be aware of it. I think of the Boy Scout Moto, when I read on this subject, "Be Prepared"

Ref Matthew 23:23-26 Are those who are attempting to define these things the ones mentioned here?

"23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it

were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

25 Behold, I have told you before.

    26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers;

    believe it not." (KJV)

If JESUS says to do something we better do it ( If you love me keep my word - commandants)

Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! (for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin), and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done (judgment, mercy, and faith), and not to leave the other undone (judgment, mercy, and faith). So yes Jesus said pay tithe, On the cross he said it is finished, can't add or take away. He has spoken to us by his word we should heed his word not wait to see if we feel like it.

If you will type Judges chapter 5 TEACHING: the most used Commentators speak on this matter of Deborah arising to this occasion to rule as a Judge; or lead.

Type it in the Google Box.

It has happened that men get caught up in commerce and other lukewarm activities: and God will use a woman.

An identical need arose in the Book of Esther. By her dedication and actions, the death of the Jews was avoided.

There are definite warnings to be heeded here. When men are seeking direction from the feet of God: women have little need to do else but follow.

It's when we get taken captive by national sports teams, political wars, nations that refuse to practice fair trades and etc....

God may raise up women to get the nation headed in the direction God demands we go.

    2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

    Isaiah 57:15

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

    James 4:10

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

    Matthew 23:12

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

    1 Peter 5:6

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

    Greetings in Jesus' name, Alec.

In this passage of scripture we can see that the pharisees were trying to trip Jesus up & condemn Him, as they always tried to, unsuccessfully. The sabbath was a convocation (an act or rehearsal) pointing to the 7th day 1000 year reign of Jesus Christ after His second coming. This is the rest spoken of in Hebrews that remaineth to enter into. Christian's don't enter into a day of the week, though there's certainly nothing wrong with observing the sabbath and the Lord's day.

    Concerning the pharisees:

13 But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

    - Isaiah 28:13

This is why Jesus said in :

    Matthew 23:23 KJV

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

    John 1:17

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

    I hope this helps you.

    Be well,

OnlytruthintheworldKJV, I do not understand the latter part of your post maybe that's me. My post was on the 7-year rapture theory using the last week of the 70th-week prophecy to create 7 years. My meaning was no part of that prophecy should be combined with Revelation. There is a lot that was fulfilled during those 70 weeks. More than can be covered in a small post. As far as the temple I have not found any scriptures that say there will be another before Jesus sets his kingdom upon the earth but there could be. If you read ( Revelation 21:22) The holy city, New Jerusalem there is no temple.

Jesus was sent only for the lost sheep of Israel and Jesus commanded his disciple to only go to the lost sheep and not to go unto the Gentiles.

Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Matthew 10:5-7 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

They did not until Peters dream and Jesus appeared to Paul, around the same time Stephen was killed. That ended the 70th-week. If you read ( Matthew 23:31-38) it shows who made it desolate and the temple was destroyed 30+ years later in their generation, by the people of the prince, Rome. When Jesus was talking to the woman at the well he talks about this happening. ( John 4:21-24).

    God bless, Ron

The leaders in the time of Jesus were wicked pretenders of religion and Jesus exposed their hypocrisy:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. ( Matthew 23:15)

And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. ( Luke 11:39)

Jesus was perceived as a threat to the religious leaders so they conspired to kill him:

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. ( John 11:47-48)

Even Pilate saw through their facade:

But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. ( Mark 15:9-10)

The great wonder of this is that God knew all this and worked it all together to provide the needed sacrifice for our sins through his Son Jesus Christ:

Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. ( Acts 2:23-24)

Behold the Fifth Gospel that came 700 years before Christ Jesus arrival on earth as the King/ Servant/ Man & God. This will be The Nation of Israel's confession in the very end of times, as it is written in past tense. When The Nation of Israel shall confess that Jesus is the Christ and Blessed and that He came in the name of Lord. Jesus even told The Nation of Israel this, in Matthew 23:39. So in the end after the two witnesses of Moses and Elijah are gone, when The Nation of Israel is surrounded and about to be wiped out by adversaries, their eyes will be opened and they will confess Isaiah 53 and Herald Christ's Return. God will save His People. A remnant yes, but He will do it. Believe God, He Brings us The Truth.

Hey Darren, thanks for answering back, we do agree on the 7 years of tribulation is 3 years or 42 months. You may agree or not, this starts when Satan is cast out in Revelation 12. Many think Satan was cast out long ago but we see in Job he still has access to heaven, in Rev. 12 we see he no longer has access to heaven and they are rejoicing in heaven. Satan (dragon) then gives his power, and his seat, and great authority to the beast, then the great tribulation starts. I'm sorry I don't know where the thousands of years come from.

Back to Daniel in vs. 27 "And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." The he does not change. The same he that shall confirm is the same he shall make it desolate, the scriptures show this is Jesus not a antichrist.

When Jesus was crucified on the cross He caused the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, (the old Levitical covenant animal sacrifices) because Jesus is the final sacrifice. Matthew 23:37-38 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

Jesus through his disciples He confirmed for the second half of the week. The 70 weeks ended when Peter had his dream and Paul was sent out.

I would like to continue with this if we both agree to study and be open to the truth. Ron

Hosea 5:4-7, Notice these 3 verses Hosea is speaking God the father, "They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.

And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.

They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.

They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.

    Hosea 5:15,

Now as we get down to vs 15 he prophesied something strange...

Verse 15: I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

When did the Lord leave his place? and what specific offense is he speaking of? and what affliction is he speaking of? let's look at Mathews 23:39. " Matthew 23:39 (KJV) For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord." Now of course they seen him again but he is saying here BEHOLD HIM AS A NATION. "NATIONALLY" Could their offence be rejection of the Messiah? Wd they be forced to call on him during the tribulation? "THE AFFLICTION " And when the Lord as mentioned in Hosea 5:15 and Jesus in Mathew 23:39. Does that nit them together as God? I will go and return to my place till" WHOS RETURNIN

I fully disagree . RCC is fully corrupt . And apostles doctrine never taught this God dishonoring doctrine .

Jesus was born of God and there fore his Son and RCC never had the spiritual understanding.
  • Chris - In Reply on Matthew 23:9 - 3 years ago
Steve, I think we've broached this matter before in our discussions. Whilst I believe in the complete Unity of God & that God is One, but from Him, we are taught from the Scriptures, proceed the Word & the Spirit. Though the original comment by Roy was one of 'fatherhood', I believe that the Word sent from God to become Man, expresses God's Fatherhood to His Son Jesus Christ. However, since the Unity of God has never been broken, the Son even at the Father's right Hand, remains wholly within the Unity of God & the full expression of His Person.

Of Jesus in the OT is written: Isaiah 9:6, Psalm 45:6,7 (cf Hebrews 1:8), Psalm 110:1, Daniel 7:13,14.

In the NT: John 1:1-14, Philippians 2:5-8, Titus 2:13 (cf John 20:28), 1 John 5:20 & many more.

So I don't believe it was the RCC or the Nicene Council that introduced the understanding of the Godhead, but what we see & learn from the Scriptures. But to say that Jesus is presently the Almighty God, without the presence of the Father in Heaven is wrong, as other Scriptures attest to it. The apostles & early Church believed in the deity of Christ & so we take it from there & hold onto it, even though our human understanding is limited & weak to understand the personality of God & His revelation to us.
  • Steve - In Reply on Matthew 23:9 - 3 years ago
Yet many hold to trinity doctrines of the RCC that are part and parcel of the same false religion, you later said God is only father and you are correct as Jesus called him father and God . No man even Jesus never claimed the position of God .

There is one Lord God and Jesus acknowledged that yet RCC and many others can not comprehend this . Jesus is born of God comes from God , Son of God and Mary . But not the LORD GOD . No man can claim this as you said and neither did Jesus .
  • Chris - In Reply on Matthew 23:9 - 3 years ago
Indeed. Even as the Roman Catholics have their priests & 'fathers' as they also refer to the Pope as 'Holy father' or 'Sancta Papa'. We can never ascribe to any man such a position & relationship as that we have to Almighty God, our Heavenly Father.

When Jesus spoke about this matter, it seemed that the Jewish leaders/teachers used that title, supposing that "the teacher formed the man" therefore giving them that right or authority. However, the Source of all life & Truth is from God & is God, so there can be no man that deserves such an honour. Yet as you correctly say, that Jesus' warning is not directed to our natural fathers, who can be called such because of our biological relationship to them.

Denny, Deut 6:6-9 was God's instruction to His people, Israel, on how they needed to deal with the Law & Statutes that were given to them. So God first tells them, "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart" v6. So the important thing was for them to store up God's Law in their hearts & minds, as we would also do today with the Bible, however, since there was very little by way of 'hard copies' of the Law at that time, memory & regular rehearsal of the Law was paramount.

Yet, one thing that was set as a physical reminder to prompt them to find recourse to the Law & to God's Mercy on them, was to do what was required in vv 8 & 9: "And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates." This was a physical act to remind them, just as some today would 'tie a string around the finger or wrist'.

So portions of the Law were bound to the arm or placed in small 'packets' on their foreheads as their reminder to remember & observe God's Laws. The (mezuzahs) were also attached to the gates of their homes & passers by would touch it & repeat Psalm 121:8. I should say, that some feel that God did not intend for objects to be used but He spoke of them in the spiritual sense, i.e. to store them in their hearts. We don't have proof of how Israel in Moses' day actually carried out this command.

However, in Jesus' day, the Scribes & Pharisees changed the significance of this observance. Rather than promoting the keeping of God's Laws, they somewhat diverted the focus more onto themselves by making the small 'packets' much, much bigger, as well as making their garment tassels long & more conspicuous. Jesus derided them on their hypocrisy in this & other matters: Matthew 23:1-12. Today, the pious Jews usually wear their phylacteries, or tefillin, during prayer times only, so as to observe the commandment.

Leviticus 18:5 - Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which IF IF IF a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD. Thing is the Jews did not keep the covenant and did you know God DIVORCED ISRAEL....

    Hmmm. most do not know.

Jeremiah 3:8 - And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of DIVORCE divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

Jeremiah 5:11 - For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.

Question: Who does the Bible alone say KILLED JESUS

A: 1 Thessalonians 2:14 -15 ...even as they have of the Jews: Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, ....

Q: Is there another plan of salvation for unbelieving Jews?

A: Acts 4:12 - Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Q: Did Jesus take the Kingdom of God from the Jews?

A: Matthew 21:43 - Therefore say I (Jesus speaking to the Jews) unto you,

The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

Matthew 23:15 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees (ALL Pharisees are Jews) , hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

    48 Then answered the Jews

    Then answered the Jews

    Then answered the Jews

    Then answered the Jews

pretty obvious who Jesus called of their father the DEVIL.

Ken well said. I might add the Pharisee Jews also were condemned of Jesus for their hypocrisy.

Luke 12:1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Matthew Chapter 16:11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake [it] not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

12 Then understood they how that he bade [them] not beware of the LEAVEN leaven of bread, but of the DOCTRINE doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Matthew 6:2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the HYPOCRITES hypocrites do in the SYNAGOGUES synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. ...ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

The Pharisee Jews would talk the talk and not walk the walk.

Matthew 23:4 For they (Pharisees) bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

    Jerusalem Part 2

Lamentations 1:8 - Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.

Ezekiel 16:2 - Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,

Malachi 2:11 - Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

Revelation 11:8 - And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. (end time Jerusalem)

Jesus, my LORD, was crucified in Jerusalem, which is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt.

Matthew 23:37 - O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Babylon killed the prophets so when you know who killed the prophets you know the identity of mystery Babylon.

..... Rev 18:24 - And in her (Babylon) was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. babylon was responsible for the BLOOD of PROPHETS.

Rev 16:6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Rev 17:6 - And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

    Mystery Babylon killed the prophets

Jesus speaking Luke 13:33 - Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

Jesus - Matthew 23:37 - O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, This is Jesus speaking and telling us who killed the prophets.

When did the Lord send prophets to the USA, Mecca or Rome?

Well apostle Paul went to Rome and he was a prophet.

Jesus speaks in Matthew 23:37 - O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! (in Jesus time)

Well said Beverly Barnes as to the "rapture" NOT being biblical. Thank you for being a voice of reason and truth.

DiamondJane exactly and Jesus even uses this imagery in his words.

Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Luke 13:34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
