I've understood it to be similar to Simon called Peter: Matthew 4:18, Matthew 10:2, different than Acts 8:9, & Luke, Acts 10:18, Acts 13:1, Acts 13:9, Acts 14:2, notice in Acts, the same book, there are multiple names referenced even a wind, Acts 27:14, Acts 27:8, Hebrews 11:18,

Matthew 1:6 Jesus called Christ, John 4:25, Luke 6:15, John 1:42, John 11:16, not Colossians 4:11,

Romans 2:17, Romans 7:3, same supposed writer as Acts , also Romans 9:26

    Matthew 26:14, Luke 23:33, John 19:13, John 19:17, Acts 6:9, Revelation 11:8,

    Revelation 12:9,

Luke 2:4, Luke 8:2, John 21:2, different than Acts 9:11,

    Acts 1:23, Acts 9:36,

    Colossians 3:15, 1John 3:1,

Hopefully these are all helpful in your study

Fred G/M GBU...May i give ya my slant on FAITH...As in Hebrews 11:1 ....Now Faith is the Substance of things Hoped for and the Evidence of things not seen....In the Spritual realm under this new covenant....Faith is a spritual Pregnancy via the seed of Christ the bridegroom ...Being bornagain of an incorruptible seed even by the words of God as ,Peter said...But this new birth requires a spritual Pregnancy which comes from hearing hiS VOIC...Faith comes by hearing his Words...There has to be an intimacy.

.....Even in the natural when a woman is pregnant she has the substance of things HOPED FOR ( the Baby ) which is the evidence of things NOT SEEN...No body can see what she has, not even her husband....But she knows it b/c her whole biological make up is changing and she can feel the baby moving with in her...@ only 6 weeks there is already a heart beat....Thats US after he sows his good seed in our hearts we have heavenly Faith...We know we are spritual Pregnant...We can feel the Spirit moving within US...My lil Children of whom i travail in birth Again till Christ is formed in you Gal 4 :19...As we have borne the image of the earthly we must also bear ( birth ) the image of the heavenly....We have the evidence of things not seen which is the H.G the Child of Promise.

.....Unless ya receive the Kingdom of God as a lil Child you will in no wise enter there in....Thats Y he has to know us, thats when his good seed is gona be sown in our hearts and minds....She brought forth a man Child that is gonna rule al nations and her Child was caught up to God and to his throne... Rev. 12 :5....We are the woman and her Child is the result of the sower and his seed...the words of that New covenant....The babes and suckling he mentions ,..Thats y he is saying the Good seed are the CHILDREN OF THE KINGDOM....There is a baby Christ in our future....Thats y he always refers to himself as the SON OF MAN.

.....Blessed are them that follow me in the REGENERATION....a BABY CHRIST...

Romans 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21- And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Romans 4:22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Hebrews 11:6 (But without faith it is impossible to please him): for he that cometh to God (must believe) that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

I cannot describe how much I miss my parents and grandparents. Like you said, I had to decide to live in the NOW.

So when the Lord called me into evangelism, I went. I made mistakes, but my heart was pure. I didn't have time to think how people had treated me prior, before I was saved.

Jesus helped me be "one of those people" that you feel you've known many years. Good news carrier with feet lol.

I have happy expectation about heaven. To see family, friends, people I prayed with, and for. I'm still here, so I'm always looking at faces to see that one person who sees the Light of Jesus, on my face. Old age isn't happening. I've got all this hope to give away, before the "door is closed".

    Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

    John 14:1

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

    John 10:38

But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

    John 5:47

But if ye believe not his writings, [Bible] how shall ye believe my words?

When it come to prophecy being revealed it is after the rapture of the church

    1 Thessalonians 4:17

    (14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

    (15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

    (16) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

    (17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

    2 Thessalonians 2:7

    4) Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

    5) Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

    6) And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

    7) For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

    8) And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

    9) Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10)And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Also what do you mean by "differently" ?

If, and if you think the church the body of Christ is what's Paul talking about thinking again .. also see this verse

    Hebrews 11:22

"By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones."

    Ronnie, the answer is in:

Hebrews 11:39 And all these (Old Testament saints), having a good report through faith, received not the PROMISE:

The Promise is eternal life (CHRIST IN YOU) and that was not available to man until Pentecost.

The Old saints were waiting in the grave for the resurrection.

    Christ is the resurrection.

Hebrews 11:40 God having provided something better for us (DEATH passes over us, and ETERNAL LIFE LIVES IN US), that they without us should not be made perfect (the image of Christ).

The Old saints as well as any that have left this body of flesh, are now in the Holy City, new Jerusalem, made without hands; because they are spirits of just men made perfect.

Hebrew 1:14 Are they not ministering spirits (the image of Christ) sent forth to minister for them who shall be HEIRS OF SALVATION.

    God Bless You!

    Yes=Ronald Whitmore.

The beginning of the Athanasian creed is out of line with Scripture. That is unfortunate to be in this creed as there are so many great things said in it to ponder and check against Scripture.

Today we have what many call "easy believeism" where people are not given much biblical doctrine when they are witnessed to or being discipled to come to faith. Most often people truncate the Gospel by eliminating many doctrines that I feel are important to present to potential believers. I am not saying that a person needs to know about Abraham, or David, or Pentecost, etc. but they should present at least what is in the Apostles' Creed or like what you wrote as your own "creed".

Conversion is a work of God from start to finish, but God uses us in the process to present the Gospel to unbelievers He has drawn to us. We should not be so concerned about "getting a decision" as to presenting the entire counsel of God concerning who we are before God prior to conversion and who we become after conversion, along with the truth about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection and what that affords us. Also, we should present God truthfully, for we are told that we need to first believe that He is... Hebrews 11:6.

So, as witnesses, we should have a sound "creed" we wish to present to those we witness to. We should know it "by heart" to present it truthfully and consistently so that each person we witness to gets the same Gospel message. Then, should one be converted, we can help them to discover these truths in the Scriptures with some reasonable explanation so that the person can grow in their faith from the start. We should make time to read the Word together with them and answer their questions. We should guide them in the "essentials" of the faith before we turn them loose on the Bible without direction and guidance.

Thank you for your response. I am glad we understand each other and know that we both have a desire to share our thoughts and what we learn
  • Ronald Whittemore - In Reply - 2 years ago
    Hey Jay,

The word creed comes from the Latin credo, "I believe." a set of beliefs of Christianity, and without believing these creeds salvation cannot be obtained. I have been told this in different denominations of churches I have gone to. "You cannot be a Christian unless you believe these creeds". Many Christian bible discussion web sites will not let you on unless you profess these creeds.

    My understanding of scripture.

You must believe that God exists. Hebrews 11:6

You must believe Jesus is the only begotten Son of God.,18 6:40; 1 John 4:14-15, 5:5, 5:10

You must believe God gave His only Son for us to have eternal life John 3:16

You must believe Jesus came in the flesh 1 John 4:3 2 John 1:7

You must believe that Jesus is the Christ 1 John 2:22

You must believe Jesus died for Your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:2-3

You must believe God raised Jesus from the dead. Romans 10:9

You must believe we are saved by Jesus' life Romans 5:10

Being baptized in the name of Jesus. Acts 2:38 Acts 8:16

You must believe we are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus 1 Corinthians 6:11

You must believe we obtain salvation only in Christ Jesus. John 14:6 2 Acts 4:12 Timothy 2:10

Are there any scriptures saying you must believe in these creeds for salvation?

Are these creeds similar to what the sect of Pharisees tried to do in Acts 15? What did Peter say? Acts 15:7-11

God is not the author of confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:33

    God bless,

    Dear Jesse

Sorry for my delayed answer but amongst other things there is a time difference between Greece and USA. When here is daytime there you have night and vise versa.

Lets go to faith. In Greek PISTIS. the verb is PISTEUO pronounced PEEH-STEH-VO stressed in the middle syllable, although the ancients may have pronounced it in a different way.

Persuation is PEITHO, the verb is the same, but stessed in the first syllable, whereas the noun is stressed in the last syllable. It is pronounced PEEH-tho.

Now, what do I call faith? I think there are different "types" of faith.

    1) Faith to Jesus That is beleiving that God excists and sent Jesus to earth to save people. This type of faith may come from hearing the Word of God.( Romans 10:17. "So then FAITH cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God"). Also by seeing an activity of God, such as a miracle. Remember that apostle Paul didn't believe in God until he saw Jesus. Also in the Acts Sergius Paulus didn't believe in Paul's words until he saw Elymas getting blind.

    2) Faith to God's Word, that is trusting God that He does what He promises. A definition of that is in Hebrews 11:1, "Now FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen"

    3) Faith is a fruit given by the Holly Spirit. Galatians 5:22. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, FAITH,..."

    4) Faith is also included in the spiritual gifts that God gives to His children. 1 Corinthians 12:9.

"V7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

    V8. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

V9. To another FAITH by the same Spirit; ..."

I don't claim to know God's word or try to be a teacher. Who can actually claim that? I may be wrong, all of us are learning , from our churches, from the communication we have between us ...

    to be continued..
  • The Gift of Aging - 2 years ago
The Holy Spirit undertook your education. He first has to get all the "idols" out of our home. It's not talked about much ( Acts 19:19), but it's the Holy Spirit of God, who drives away the demonic and shelters the new birth of a believer.

God is so very loving towards us. He hears every pitiful little cry of our hearts. He did for me. All I knew was that Abba, my Father was always nearby. I was so needy. I'm not ashamed to admit it. Now, in my old age, I still need that constant exchange of love.

Nothing the world has to offer, can satisfy the thirsty soul. When you reach a certain age (in Christ), you stop looking backwards and look forward more and more. It's very freeing.

    Psalm 42:1 (HNV)

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul after you, God.

    [ Isaiah 41:9-10, 18, 20] John 4:14

These aren't just lifeless scriptures on a page. They are life giving to our souls. Lifting the spirit within us. Jesus is coming back for us.

Hebrews 11:13 - These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were PERSUADED of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Sometimes being called aliens to this world. We are awaiting our redemption. Rejoice. We will see Jesus! Hallelujah to the Lord.

Sister GiGi: Revelation is very much ACTUAL; but the ACTUAL is hidden in symbols, metaphors, etc.

The seven seals were opened at the death and resurrection of Christ and pentecost, forty five days later.

    Revelation 6

First seal white horse (Christ) to conquer (as Holy Ghost).

Second seal red horse (Satan to deceive the whole world)

Third seal, black horse, balances (judgement give to rightly divide the word of God)

Forth seal Death and the grave

Fifth seal Old testament saints awaiting Christ resurrection.

Hebrews 11:39 And these all (Old Saints) having obtained a good report through FAITH (given to them by the Holy Ghost), received not the promise (of Eternal life, but having to wait under the alter (the grave) for Christ resurrection).

Hebrews 11:40 God having provided some better thing for us (we shall never see death), that they (Old Saints) without us (New Saints) should be made perfect (through Christ resurrection).

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that has his part in the FIRST RESURRECTION .....

Sixth seal Christ crucifixation and resurrection.

Revelation 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon turned to blood.

Joel 2:31 And the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible DAY of the Lord come.

Matthew 27:51-53 earthquake, Old saints resurrected, moon (symbolic of Christ, Psalms 89:37).

Seventh seal silence in heaven one half hour (symbolic) of the forty five days between the resurrection and pentecost.

Daniel 12:11 From the time the daily sacrifice shall be taken away and the ABOMINATION THAT MAKETH DESOLATE SET UP, there shall be twelve hundred ninety days (forty two months, Christ ministry IN THE FLESH).

Daniel 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days (pentecost, Christ second coming and ministry on earth).

Ms. Jackson, pray for God to increase your faith. Faith is what sets our heart at one with God so we can believe his promises and live for him. Faith give access into grace ( Romans 5:2). We receive the Holy Spirit by the hearing of faith ( Galatians 3:2). Faith is the victory that overcomes the world ( 1 John 5:4). When reading the Bible ask yourself if you really belief what it says. Hebrews 11:6 "But with out faith it is impossible to please God: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him". Faith precedes grace, the Holy Spirit, imputes righteousness and gives victory. Faith the size of a mustard seed will remove mountains ( Matthew 17:20). Hebrews 11 has good examples of faith and the effects of it.

    Gill's Commentary of: 3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper___ Or succeed in all temporal affairs, in the business of life, in which he was; and as success of this sort depends upon the blessing of God, which maketh rich, it is to be wished and prayed for from him:

and be in health; that is, of body, which above all things above all outward mercies, is the most desirable; for without this, what are the richest dainties, the largest possessions, or the best of friends? without this there can be no comfortable enjoyment of either of them; and therefore of this sort of mercies, it is in the first place, and above all others, to be wished for, and desired by one friend for another. The rule and measure of this wish is according to the prosperity of his soul,

even as thy soul prospereth: the soul is diseased with sin, and may be said to be in good health, when all its iniquities are forgiven; and may be said to prosper, when having a spiritual appetite for the Gospel, the sincere milk of the word, it feeds upon it, is nourished by it, and grows thereby; when it is in the lively exercise of faith, hope, and love; when spiritual knowledge is increased, or it grows in grace, and in the knowledge of Christ Jesus; when the inward man is renewed day by day with fresh strength; and when it enjoys communion with God, has the light of his countenance, and the joys of his salvation; and when it is fruitful in every good work.

Mishael: this would be a fine prayer to pray for yourself. This time in history, we need all of the Lords blessings working for us.

I want to correct something I wrote in error. "Also Hebrews 11:40 and Hebrews 12:1 show that the people in Hebrews 11 ultimately HAD their faith made perfect when WE ENTERED into the New Covenant."

What Hebrews 11:40 really shows is that the people in Hebrews 11 WILL NOT be made perfect without us.

39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

This indicates a future perfection for both them and us, with our perfection either coming at the same time as theirs or before theirs. The perfection being spoken of I take to be the same as 1 Corinthians 13:10

But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

I do believe that there is a connection in Hebrews 11 between the examples of faith before Christ the author lists and our faith in Christ ( Hebrews 11:6,9-10,14-16,19,25-26) as well as their future perfection and ours ( Hebrews 11:39-40), otherwise it is hard to understand the purpose of Hebrews 11 in my view.

Anyway, I wanted to correct what I said. It is harder than I thought to deal with topics that don't have an easy proof text and present them within a 2000 character limit without any mischaracterazation of scripture in my summaries. And in this case I did have a misunderstanding of what the author of Hebrews wrote that I only realized after reading the scriptures I had referenced more carefully.

    Hebrews 9:15

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

While some commentators say the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament only applied to believers under the law that came to faith after Jesus died, many say this applied to all sins committed by God's elect in all ages who had the faith of Hebrews 11:6 that pleased God. I take the later view. Also Hebrews 11:40 and Hebrews 12:1 show that the people in Hebrews 11 ultimately had their faith made perfect when we entered into the New Covenant.

They also had the first messianic promise of the Seed of the woman in the curse God uttered against the serpent immediately after the fall before he curse woman and man ( Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.)

The old testament was a progressive revelation of the promise within the serpent's curse in numerous ways. It was always expanded by God making other promises, like the promised multiplying of the seed of Abraham like the stars in the heavens which Abraham believed and by that faith was counted righteous. The Messianic Psalms of David. The prophesied Servant of Isaiah. The prophesied New Covenant of Jeremiah. And those are just a small sample of these kinds of promises. We know 2 Corinthiand 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. I believe Jesus was always an inseparable part of every promise God ever made in the Old Testament from the moment He made them and that is what those old testament saints were believing in, even if only seen in shadow. Even we still only know in part and see through a glass darkly when we look at God's prophetic promises 1 Corinthians 13:9-12.

It should have for believers, but with all things involving people change was difficult and many Jews had difficulty leaving it behind. Social pressures, rejection by families and being put out of the synagogues brought challenges and the temptation to go along to get along. That is why the book of Hebrews was written. The author was trying to prevent Jewish believers from turning back to the sacrificial system and showing them Jesus was superior in every way to that system.

Here is my attempt to summarize Hebrews:

Jesus superior to the prophets: Hebrews 1:1-3

Jesus superior to angels: Hebrews 1:4-14, Hebrews 2:1-8

Jesus able to represent humanity: Hebrews 2:9-18

Jesus superior to Moses: Hebrews 3:1-6

Warnings about hardening our hearts to God's calling: 3:7-19

Warnings about missing God's rest provided by faith in Jesus: 4:1-13

Jesus provides bold access as our high priest: 4:14-16, Jesus meets high priest requirements: Hebrews 5:1-10

Warning about being dull of hearing and unprepared for a deeper teaching: Hebrews 5:11-14, 6:1-8

Encouragement to believe that they are ready for deeper teaching: Hebrews 6:9-12

Teaching about the importance of God giving His oath to Christ He would be a priest forever: Hebrews 6:13-20

Teaching the superiority of the order of Melchisedek that Christ belongs to over the Levitical priesthood order: Hebrews 7:1-28

Christ's priesthood serves the heavenly reality that the law only was an earthly copy of: Hebrews 8:1-5

The superiority of the New Covenant over the Old: Hebrews 8:6-13,

The superiority of Christ's complete sevice over the incomplete Levitical service: Hebrews 9:1-28

The superiority of Christ's sacrifice: Hebrews 10:1-22

Warnings about drawing back: Hebrews 10:23-39

Importance of and examples of faith: Hebrews 11:1-40

Exhortation to submit to chastisement: Hebrews 12:1-29

Exhortation to practically live out their Christian faith and benediction: Hebrews 13:1-25

    Hi QuilaD.

    Here's the requested scriptures.

Genesis 4:4-7 (KJV) And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Hebrews 11:4 (KJV) By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

    Welcome to the site and

    God bless.

    Hi Valerie.

The scripture says. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Hebrews 11:4.

Now faith comes by hearing the word of God.

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:17.

So apparently they were instructed to offer what Abel offered which we find in Genesis 4:4.

"And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:"

This was a sacrifice pointing to the Lord Jesus Christ, who would later come and be a sacrfice for the whole world. John 1:29. "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."

Faith comes by hearing the word, so apparently Adam may have preached this to them, Abel demonstrated his faith by his offering. "Obedience and belief in what he was commanded to do.

Cain demonstrated unbelief by disregarding and disbelieving in what he was told.

Look at Gods response to Cain.

"But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him." Genesis 4:5-7.

Under the old covenant they offered up sacrifices pointing to one to come (Jesus).

The death of Christ ended that Covenant. read Hebrews 9:13-20.

    Now we offer up ourselves.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Romans 12:1.

    I hope that helps.

    God bless.

    Hi Marcus.

Amen. Abel acted on faith demonstrated by obedience.

By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Hebrews 11:4.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17.

I believe these verses suggest that offering the firstling of his flock was being preached. "Faith comes by hearing"

    God bless.
