Your assessment of Genesis is not correct.

"the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:" Genesis 3:22

God forbid them to eat from the tree of life.

    Adam and Eve died a "spiritual death" in the day they ate the forbidden fruit;

and Adam did not experience "physical death" until he was around a thousand years old.

    FOR IT IS WRITTEN!!

A number of times during His earthly ministry, Jesus responded to questions with, "It is written" (7 times in Matthew, 4 times in Mark, 5 times in Luke, 1 time in John). In the Bible, we also read of many time when Jesus quoted the truths of God from the Hebrew Scriptures.

Satan doesn't dispute whether it was written or not. He tries to redefine the word of God.

    as seen here.

    Genesis 3:4-5. and

    Matthew 4:3-7, 10.

Notice every rebuke came from Jesus was by the written scripture.

    3) And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

    4) But he answered and said, IT IS WRITTEN, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. ( Deuteronomy 8:3.)

    5) Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

    6) And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. ( Psalms 91:11-12.)

    7) Jesus said unto him, IT IS WRITTEN again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

    ( Deuteronomy 6:16.)

    10) Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for IT IS WRITTEN, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. ( Deuteronomy 6:13. Deuteronomy 10:20.)

it's interesting The Lord and Satan goes back and forward over what is written.

They both took the scripture literally! The issue is how to apply it.

With Eve the Devil tactic was to misinform.

With the Lord the Devil tried to misapply scripture.

When the enemy can't remove the scripture he set tares amongst us to distort the ministry in every way possible.

    NOTE:

The notion that there is no Hell and there is no Satan comes from the same Evil source that told Eve she shall not surely die.

    God bless.

Yes, it is wrong for women and young women to wear clothing that reveals too much skin. Woman are to honor God by their actions and dress.

Genesis 3:21, "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them."

The word, "coats," as mentioned in Genesis 3:21 comes from the Hebrew word from the Bible Concordance:

kthneth, keth-o'-neth; or kuttneth; from an unused root meaning to cover (compare H3802); a shirt:-coat, garment, robe.

H3802 comes from the Hebrew word kthph, kaw-thafe'; from an unused root meaning to clothe; the shoulder (proper, i.e. upper end of the arm; as being the spot where the garments hang); figuratively, side-piece or lateral projection of anything:-arm, corner, shoulder(-piece), side, undersetter.

Outline of Biblical Usage per Blue letter Bible:

    tunic, under-garment,

a long shirt-like garment usually of linen

Dear Edward, please read Genesis 3:22

"And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become AS ONE OF US, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:"

I think the above "as one of us" gives you an answer.

    Thurman,

It would apply the same today. Where it says it is a shame for women to speak in the church, it doesn't mean that she can't talk. There was something taking place in the church back then that prompted Paul to write this.

Up to this point in 1 Corinthians, we were given the procedure for the proper order in the church. From Verse 34 on, we see the principles for authority. There are seven commands that are given. The first command is in Verse 34 that says let your women keep silence in the churches. That's a command.

The word woman in scripture is also the word for wife, which meets the criteria for here. Let your women, (or wives), keep silence in the churches: Please understand that back then when they gathered together, they had men on one side of the church, and the women on the other. Men could not sit with women, and women could not sit with men.

The problem was that you would have somebody teaching, and somebody's wife is over on the other side of the church calling out to her husband across the room, and they were talking across the room and being disruptive. So Paul she's not permitted to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

That's back in Genesis 3:16 under the woman. Remember after they sinned, God said I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception. In sorrow you shall bring forth children and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over thee.

Second command is in Verse 35. "And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church." Notice it does not say "teach." That's covered elsewhere. So the woman was to remain silent. If she didn't understand what was being taught, she was to ask her husband at home what it meant. Also, keep in mind that the husband was responsibility to take what was being taught, and he had the responsibility to make sure that his family at home understood the teaching.

    Hey Mark,

The times of Noah were horrendous as in Genesis 6:11. As you said sons of God are used 5 times in OT Genesis 6 Job 1 Job 2 and Job 38 all referring to angels. It is used 6 times in the NT John 1 Romans 8 Philippians 2 and 1 John 3, my understanding is referring to those who have accepted and have faith in Jesus.

There are many opinions on fallen angels, devils/demons. There are evil beings on this earth today, we see in Daniel battles that may be going on that we are not aware of, Daniel 10. There is a set of angels that were different and for what they did, God locked them in chains of darkness until the judgment 2 Peter 2:4 Jude 1:6, and others can still roam the earth.

In verses 6:4 daughters of men having children, they became mighty men of old. The Hebrew word for old is m-'-w-lm, meaning defined as long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, or world. It was translated everlasting 110 times, forever 136 times.

Giants we see before and after the flood as said in Genesis 6:4 "and also after that". The word giant is Nephilim and also the Rephaim (or Rephaites, the terrible ones), You can find them throughout the OT and their descriptions are not just a tall big man, Numbers 13:33 Amos 2:9 and more.

When God created everything the seed is after his kind, a dog will have a dog, a bear will have a bear, and so on, a man and woman may have a tall big man but it will not be a giant. Angels can on earth have a body that can eat, and drink, Genesis 18, fiscally wrestle Genesis 32 and we are told how we should entertain strangers because they may be an angel, Hebrews 13.

Just a few things you may look at. If an angel left his first estate and came down to earth could he mate? Was that why God locked them in darkness and other bad angels and Satan can still roam the earth? After the flood, there were only 8 where did these giants come from?

    Interesting subject,

    God bless,

Hello, Diane, the Scriptures in Genesis 3 state that Adam fathered Cain.

Many people nowadays are perpetuate the "serpent seed" false doctrine that Satan fathered Cain. But to do this, one has to read more into the text than is intended.

Adam knew Eve and she conceived and brought forth as son, Cain. Simple cause and effect. Been happening this way since the dawn of man.
  • WHAT HAPPENED IN GENESIS 3 verse 15 - In Reply - 1 year ago
GENESIS 3:15 is being used by satanic cults to publish all over, that Eve had sex with Satan, and that Cain was Satans offspring.

You can Google it. "Is Lucifer Cains father"

All of the CULTS that are teaching this abomination will pop up.

If you actually believe THAT is the truth, you're salvation is false, and you are not saved. But you can be saved__if you renounce what you heard and believed.

Eves 3rd child was Seth. Through his bloodline, the Savior of the World would be born__JESUS.

Jesus is WHO IN Genesis 3:15, would stump Satans Head and rip away any authority Satan HAD stolen from Adam and Eve.

Adam and Eve never cheated on each other. God protect all of their seed (children).

ALSO, scripture says that LUCIFER/SATAN IS A CREATED BEING. Isaiah 14. He is unable to create children.

He is an EX-archangel. His future will be lived in hell, and then the Lake of Fire permanently.

    His big weapon is DECEPTION.

He's not a god. If he was he would have prevented Jesus dying on the Cross for the sins of all mankind. When Jesus was resurrected, and walked out of the Tomb,

Every demon and Satan knew their end would be the Lske of Fire.

There are more than one kind of seed and some seeds in the Bible are evil.

    Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

The mustard seed is very small but the mustard plant is a weed without branches, not a towering tree.

Birds can be clean or unclean and birds in the branches of a tree are not generally a depiction of some sort of ecumenicism approved of God. I already mentioned Pharaoh and his great tree the Lord cut down because of his pride. This is Nebuchadnezzar's tree full of birds that the Lord also cut down because of his pride ( Daniel 4):

    20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;

21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:

22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

    23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;

24 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king:

25 That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

    Dear brother/sister

To my opinion you are right about Genesis 3:15 interpretation, and also about the armor of God.

I actually agree with you that satan didn't know God's plan to save people. If he knew he would not lead Jesus to the cross. If Jesus didn't die and ressurected we couldn't have been saved. That was probably why God's plan was hidden from His people and His prophets in the OT When satan found out what happened it was too late for him.

Authority of the Believer by Charles Capps on YouTube.

I had to pause and take notes. I verified his scripture references.

It explains how Jesus set aside his power to be born to Virgin Mary. Earth being created for humans only. Satan stole Adam's authority. It gave Satan auth to hurt God's people. Jesus came to fulfill Genesis 3:15 and crush Satan's head (power) and take back the authority and give it to believers in Jesus.

That, plus Ephesians 6, helps us defeat the devil and other satanic beings. A lot of people don't want to know about it.

After I was saved, I endured vicious attacks but I learned who and where to turn to for safety. Jesus, the Word of God.

If Satan knew or Belived that Jesus would be resurrected, he would have fought against the crowd that crucified Jesus.

Revelation 12:4 apparently. Also check out Hebrews 12:22; and Matthew 25:41.

Some thoughts: Angels were WITH God at the creation; hence they saw everything. God has NO redemption for them. How much they were aware of the consequences of their rebellion is unclear. Praise God that we do NOT see such things. Praise God that God didn't let Adam go on in his FALLEN state without removing the tree of life which would have sealed him forever in that state-and that He had a redemption plan for man as Genesis 3:15 indicates. Of course we don't have any listing of Adam in the "hall of saints" of Hebrews 11.

We have the apparent corruption of the seed of men mentioned in Genesis 6 and likely that will be repeated with some DNA alteration with the mark of the beast. It would seem; anyway that the demon rising out of the pit (Apollyon) will possess Antichrist; who in turn will decieve ALL those not in the Book of Life with some promise of utopia or eternal existence. My point here is that day and night the devil never sleeps ( Rev. 12:10; and 1 Peter 5:8-9). He uses the minds of natural men and the desires of the world to decieve ( Matt. 16:23). This verse is sobering; because it shows that our natural desire to live must be superceded by dying to self and for Him if necessary. It also reflects what on the surface would seem to e a sympathetic statement by Peter who couldn't concieve of Christ as Lord (which the Spirit apparently revealed to him right before that) having to go through that. His natural mind was like the others who became exceedingly sad and tuned out these hard sayings.

Jesus; mercifully reasurred Peter that after he converted that he would also strengthen his brethren. ( Luke 22:31-32). This probably refers to the state at Pentecost after he was transformed. Jesus alluded to this after asking 3 times if he loved Him (using different terms for love). He thus went where he didn't want to go. We must also walk in the Spirit. Agape.

  • WHY GOD CREATED HUMANS AS HE DID__WHY COLORS - In Reply on Genesis 1:26 - 1 year ago
Everybody has different answers for that. I turn to Genesis where God created man. What material was He using?

    Genesis 1:26, Genesis 2:7

God FORMED (meaning molded) man from DUST. He made a clay with water. Scientists say our bodies are 50% water.

Then God breathed through Adams nose the breath of Gods life. Man became a living SOUL.

People get confused over Gen. 1:27 because here it says God created Adam "male & female". See Malachi 2:15 "ONE. A Pair.

Genesis 3:18 God purposes to make Adam a help, meet, for Adam.

Gen. 3:21 God opens Adam and takes a rib. God MADE a woman for Adam. They are "married" in verses 23-25

One=a man and a woman. But by the Books Leviticus and Deuteronomy, we see "perversions of the Plan of God". Which still persists in Romans chapter 1. Today it's different; people are having surgery. GOOD NEWS, They can still repent and be saved. God can't fix their bodies, but He will save their souls IF they repent.

Moses's writing of Genesis seems to skip around, but God told him how to write it down.

God planned that children would be born of one man and a woman. A pair. Married in covenant to each other.

Why different colors? God used dust because dust contains ALL colors. I'm an artist, and we use all mediums to make paint different colors and consistencies.

Eve came out of Adam, so her color was his color. Blending their DNA in a child, could produce a child of the color in that DNA. Colors, diseases, etc can happen if DNA is damaged somehow.

One color is not more precious to God. He wanted all colors, or he would've use just limestone or charcoal. He CHOSE DUST.

Satan was still around. He is the ACCUSER; creator of chaos. To hurt Gods creation, he preached Prejudice. We see in Nineveh when they built the Tower of Babel.

One day, Satan will be in the Lake of Fire, eternally.

DNA is not a curse. It has a purpose. Love yourself and love God. Grace is unmerited favor. Ask God for more.

    I love you

    Dear Daniel.

At first Chris's answer is great.

But I want to see it from a different angle.

Lets go to Genesis 3: 4-5

V4 - And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

V5 - For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

In that statement there a lie, a truth, and something hidden. That is really evil because people see the truth and then easily accept the lie.

The lie is that Adam and Eve will not die.

The truth is that Adam and Eve will know good and evil like God does.

The hidden thing is that since people get to know evil then they cannot avoid it. They become vulnerable to it. It is not the same with God. Read James 1:13 "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:"

God knowes what evil is but He is not tempted by it. His nature is invulnerable to sin. This is a huge difference between man and God.

The lesson? There are thoughts in our minds that are ours, thoughts from God and thoughts from satan. If a thought is from God then it is about smt good. If otherwise then it may be from satan. In this case don't go to a discussion with satan when he places thoughts in your mind. You cannot win, you wiil eventually fail. Do what Jesus did when faced him in the dessert. Answered him using the Scripture, because the Scripture is the truth. Satan also tried to use himself the Scripture by twisting it but still Jesus answered back the right answer because He knew the Scripture well. Lesson for us? We have to study and learn the Scripture, what it is written, what is meant, etc. And still when a bad thought comes to your mind, nevermind if it yours or satan's, just throw it away, don't think about it, you never know where it will lead you to. There is a saying I like " We can not avoid birds sitting on a tree but we can send them away"

We do not control our thoughts most of the time. So how does that factor in?

I'm happy my thoughts are not the creators thoughts, because thoughts just get thrown into my mind, sometimes good, sometimes bad. I would hope the creator doesn't have bad thoughts about mankind, because we are the creators creation.

But, according to Genesis 3:22, we became like the creator in knowing good and evil. So, does the creator have evil thoughts as well, and how are those thoughts different from mankind?

    Giannis, who is Satan?

    Everything has an OPPOSITE.

The tree of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil (opposites).

The word Of God is BUILT AROUND PARABLES, tree, or trees, is signified (represents something other than what it is in the physical).

Christ is a Lamb, TREE OF LIFE ETC.

The New Testament parables teach that we are the garden of God (Eden). Isaiah 5:7 Ezekiel 31:8

The TREE of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil exist in the midst of the garden (CHRIST is this tree, as he is also the tree of Life) In the midst of the garden.

Colossians 1:27 ..this mystery ...CHRIST IN YOU ..

We have only knowledge of evil, until Christ (the Holy Ghost) releases, or causes, us to have the mind of Christ (then we sprout and eventually become a tree, also. Isaiah 6:13 Ezekiel 47:7 Revelation 22:1-2

There is ONLY ONE SPIRIT, but the KNOWLEDGE of that ONE SPIRIT contains both good and evil.

Genesis 3:22 ....the man has BECOME LIKE ONE OF US (the man has become like God) to know good and evil....

Before man ate (the words of God), which is the TREE of KNOWLEDGE (Christ), he was the Child of SATAN (no knowledge).

You are BORN AGAIN by THE WORD'S OF GOD.

1 Peter 1:23 BEING BORN AGAIN ....by the WORD'S OF GOD ...

Now Satan (DARKNESS)(lies, deception, falsehoods) has been DESTROYED and LIGHT SHINES FORTH.

Isaiah 45:7 I FORM THE LIGHT, AND CAUSE DARKNESS: I make peace, and create evil ..

Isaiah 9:2 The people that waked in DARKNESS, have seen a GREAT LIGHT ...

    WHO IS SATAN?

1 Corinthians 2:6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are PERFECT (born of truth), yet not the WISDOM OF THIS WORLD, nor of THE PRINCES OF THIS WORLD (children of Satan living in lies, deception and falsehoods, children of death and the grave).

1 Corinthians 2:8 Which none of the PRINCES of this world knew, for had they known it, they would not have crucified the LORD OF GLORY.

Matthew 12:38 But if I (our God is a consuming FIRE) cast out devils (lies, deception, falsehoods) ...then the KINGDOM IS COME

Genesis 1:28, other translations say "to fill" or "make full" the earth, replacing "replinish" , it would be interesting to do original text reasearch on the word.

    Genesis 2:16,17,

If you look at Genesis 5:1-2, it can change the perspective, to who exactly the name Adam, is referring to. It's similar to referencing "man or mankind, man made" the difference seems to be clarified more when it says "the woman " Genesis 3, if we look however as Genesis 2, being in chronological order, then the woman arrives Genesis 2:18,19,21,22, after. However Genesis 3:1-3, shows she was very aware of the 'law' 2Corinthians 11:3, 1Timothy 2:13-15,

Genesis 2:23, He 1st named her ' woman ' interestingly Jacob also seems to do the same when GOD changed his name to Israel he continues to be referred to as Jacob, also. Genesis 32:28, Genesis 35:10, Genesis 46:2,5,

It doesn't say their children would be a punishment, Genesis 3:16, pregnancy & childbirth is difficult, painful, with distress. Woman also have hormons that magnify crying 'sorrow'. Explaining the curse also. Why, seems to be explained in Gen. 3. Revelation 12:2, John 16:21,

Genesis 3:7, fig leaves, will decompose & provide no warmth, It's a temporary, hasty, bad choice. Genesis 3:21, compassion, provision, love, mercy, knowledge, wisdom & protection, is why GOD made coats of skin for them. Remember they were no longer allowed in the protected environment of the special garden. Genesis 3:23-24, Ephesians 2:4,

"how, did GOD make skins from animals for them & why" It appears to be the 1st animal sacrifice to cover "mans sins".

    Romans 5:14, John 3:15,16, 1Corinthians 15:22, 1Corinthians 15:45, 1Chronicles 1:1, Luke 3,

    Proverbs 7, Romans 8, Hebrews 10, Matthew 13,

This is a fascinating thing. I heard a sermon one time saying the words spoken about "if someone sees the face of GOD they cannot live" he said "they cannot live, the same" Is this the question you're looking deeper into? Genesis 32:20,30, Exodus 33:11, Exodus 34:28-30,35,

    It would be very interesting to do a study on the words. Exodus 3:6, Exodus 33:20,23, Numbers 6:25, Deuteronomy 5:1-5, Deuteronomy 31:17,18, Deuteronomy 32:20, Deuteronomy 34:10, Judges 6:22, 1Kings 13:6, 1Chronicles 16:11, 2Chronicles 7:14, 2Chronicles 30:9, Psalms 13:1, Psalms 17:5, Psalms 22:24, Psalms 105:4, Isaiah 54:8, Isaiah 59:2, Jeremiah 21:10, Ezekiel 20:35,

Perhaps it's the word "man" that the emphasise is. Romans 8:14, Galatians 4:6, Hebrews 12:7, John 1:12, Philippians 2:15, 1John 3:1,2 , 1John 4:15, How sad it is when a living father says "see his face no more" or turns his face.

Genesis 3:8-10, interestingly, in this translation it says they heard "the voice of the LORD" they "hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God"

What's amazing is: Genesis 4:16, it appears even though they were cast out of the garden GOD's presence was still with them.

    Psalms 139, Job 4:15,

    Hopefully this is helpful

Genesis 3:8 seems to indicate that Adam talked with God in the cool of the day along with Eve. The earlier communication in 2:15 seemed to be a command from God. The animals named by Adam were due to God bringing them to him; not necessarily indicating that anything was communicated as a directive for that event. Then once again; God was the sole voice in His declarations to Adam; Eve and the serpent. Evidence of the Godhead is in the word "Elohim" in the beginning of Genesis; and after the fall when He said that man would become "as one of us" (v. 22).

As to which member of the Godhead was talked to; Exodus indicates that no man spoke face to face with God as Moses did ( Exodus 33:11; Deut. 34:10). It would appear that the preincarnate Christ would have been the one who can be approached; and certainly even in His case not in His full glory. Only the back of God could be revealed to Moses ( Exodus 33:12-23).

It should be noted that since man had not yet fallen before this; that there could have been a closer fellowship before Adam hid from God. There was only one restriction before this; and after man was doomed to his fate and eventual physical death after that spiritual death had occurred; the only further restriction at that time was preventing man from taking of the tree of life and living forever in a fallen state. Genesis 3:15 shows God's spiritual provision; and the skins from the first killed animal the outer provision or covering ( Genesis 3:21).

It seems clear that God spoke throughout the process that the Biblical canon was developed; and in fact since Creation. There were lapses; likely before the flood when all but Noah and his immediate family were saved; and later during the time of the Judges according to scripture. There was probably another long lag in the intertestamental period. The sobering thought is even Balaam spoke to God and Judas Iscariot was in His presence. Better to believe what is unseen than seen ( John 20)

    To Mike

They did have the authority, as they did in fact eat. If they hadn't had the authority, they would have been physically unable to eat.

1 Corinthians 10:23 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not."

In Exodus 20, the ten commandments are spoken by God in an ordering voice: "Thou shalt not commit adultery.", for example. And yet people still do commit adultery, so they have the authority. Whether it is convenient or not, well, I don't have to spell that out for you.

The serpent deceived Eve in telling her that she wouldn't die despite God saying that they would:

"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

Sure, they wouldn't die immediately, which the serpent based on this his "half-lie": "Ye shall not surely die"; but they certainly did so eventually, as for God one day and a thousand years are one and the same.

Genesis 3:20 "And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living."

1 Corinthians 15:45 "And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." I repeat: The first man Adam

Another observation, though this is but speculation:

There is only one tree of the knowledge of good and evil, so the fruit it bears might not have seeds as it doesn't multiply.

Judah's firstborn son Er has died, killed by God for an unnamed wickedness. Since Er died without leaving children, Judah has told his second oldest son, Onan, to take Er's widow Tamar as his wife. His responsibility is to have children with her, raising those offspring on behalf of his brother. This was a strong custom in the region at the time, and it would be part of God's law for the nation of Israel ( Deuteronomy 25:5-6).This would ensure that the departed man's line could continue. It would also provide for the woman's care, giving her children to support her as she aged.

Onan doesn't like the idea. According to this custom, the children will legally be considered heirs of his dead brother. The time and resources Onan must provide caring for them won't be part of his legacy. Some portion of his future earnings and estate will go to children who are legally and culturally considered someone else's sons.

In response, Onan deliberately avoids conceiving children with Tamar. If that meant avoiding intercourse with her, his choice would merely have been callous. The later, formal version of "levirate marriage" would include a way for the surviving brother to avoid taking on the new wife ( Deuteronomy 25:7-10). Instead, Onan takes advantage of both the situation and of Tamar. He uses her for sex but interrupts the act at the very end to prevent conception. This is not a single event, but a pattern: it was Onan's choice "whenever" he had sex with Tamar. For that, God will strike Onan dead ( Genesis 38:10).

This sin and its dire consequences inspired the term "Onanism." This word is most often applied to what modern people label as "masturbation." A common assumption is that God punished Onan for self-gratification, or for having sex simply for pleasure. Strictly speaking, however, Onan's sin was how he used Tamar for sex while deliberately avoiding taking the responsibilities
