    Dave,

I'm not sure if your question was about GOD or man. I will try my best to answer it. Ironically " ambiguous " meaning double meaning._._

I think that GOD's WORD the Bible is clear, when we study, & pray for wisdom. James 1:5,

1st GOD gave people dominion: Genesis 1:26,27,28, = power, dominion ect. Within 2nd Generation & continued; 1st crime: Genesis 4:6-9, & Genesis 4:23, dominion with disregard for others, even anothers very life. Genesis 6:5, Exodus 1:8,13,16,22, even disregard for life of children

Even then though GOD doesn't disregard HE repayed. Exodus 12:29, Exodus 13:15, notice the whole chapter of Exodus 12, points to John 3:15,16,17, Again people with dominion & power disregarding life of innocent: Luke 22:1,2,7,20,54,63,64, continued; Luke 23:1,2,15,21,33,34,

Also: they killed their own children, Leviticus 18:21, Leviticus 20:1-8, that GOD had destroyed nations for that sin! 1Kings 11:7, 2Kings 23:10,

Jeremiah 32:35, ( how? ) it's unimaginable even to GOD ALMIGHTY ! Jeremiah 7:31, Jeremiah 19:5, 2Chronicles 33:9, 1Kings 11:1-12, Deuteronomy 6:14, Deuteronomy 7:1-8, why? Was it because they destroyed the children, had disregard for innocent lives of their own offspring? Images of GOD

Psalms 82:6, in context Psalms 82,

    GOD will Judge: Matthew 25:31-46, Matthew 18:5,6,10,14, Matthew 19:14, Mark 9:42, Luke 17:2, 2Peter 2:7-9, Psalms 9:7,

If your question is regarding "us" "believers" Luke 12:32, Revelation 21,

There will be suffering here on Earth but promises to those who endure, Matthew 24, Mark 13, Revelation 10, 2Timothy 2:3, Revelation 6:9-11,

    Hopefully these are helpful

BEFORE I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Do we get a free pass on Judging Gods Workmanship? Because this child was born blind, this child was a rapists seed?

A better question: do we judge God for not making us the definition of perfection, because: our nose is too big, our ears too small, stubby fingers_not long and tapering?

Who is in charge of our beginnings, the variables?

Only a Loving God, only Our Savior, can look into a womb and see perfection, possibilities, future of the next generation.

If all we see are imperfections, no one would be born; given a chance to make the world a better place.

Instead of abortion clinics, why not sterilization instead?

God said in Deuteronomy_Choose Life that You and Your Seed shall Live. Our God is very very Wise.

Hi Robert. This passage in Leviticus, particularly verses 27 & 28, was a warning to Israel not to mimic the activities relating to the dead. Those of the heathen often cut or whipped themselves expressing sorrow for their departed ones; the Muslims (the Shia sect) even today, whip themselves with barbed rope or cut themselves with knives, as they visually demonstrate sorrow for the death of Mohammed's grandson in battle - this they do in a special parade of commemoration. Likewise, the heathen marked themselves, both with paint & knife cuttings/blood letting, as part of their idol worship or expression of sorrow.

But Israel was not to do such things or disfigure the body, which was made in God's Image. Rather they were commanded to bear the emblem of God's Creed, the Mosaic Law, having phylacteries which were to be bound as "a sign" upon the hand, and as "a memorial" between the eyes "that the Lord's Law may be in his mouth" ( Exodus 13:9,16).

If we bring all that to today's times, any cutting, painting, tatooing, or disfigurement of the body stands in violation to what God has made & given to us. For the unbeliever, it may just be a fad or harmless decoration - to the believer, we should not get caught up with modern trends, rather continue to present ourselves, inwardly & outwardly, as holy vessels fit for the Lord's use & a testimony of His Creative Work & our submission to His requirement for holy living.

Thank you Mya. I see your point. I was meaning that they needed to be strengthened for battle and for the 40 years of wandering. In Egypt they most likely went home each night and rested for the next day. The wilderness journey included all-nighters and the need for stamina for the long term. But I do admit that the men were probably strong because they were the workers of the brick making most likely. The women perhaps had other assignments, so may have needed to gain strength for the journey. It is interesting that when things got hard in the wilderness the Israelites complained and said that it would be better to be back in Egypt. That is why I said that they needed to be made stronger.

This amazing chapter in Exodus shows us the awesomeness of God's ability to turn nature upside down to deliver His people.

In the first few verses, we are told how YHWH instructed Moses to take a certain path into the wilderness. Moses most likely knew this area well in his 40 years away from Egypt. But YHWH was not going to have Moses decide the route. Sometimes our own knowledge seems best to follow, but it is always best to follow the directions of God. I was reading on a couple Christian archeological sites concerning the most likely route taken by the Israelites when they left Goshen and where the ities mentioned may be located. This was interesting reading.

Many of us learned the "traditional" route of the Israelites and location of Mt. Sinai at the southern end of the Sinai peninusla. Many of us were taught that the Israelites crossed the sea as the freshwater lakes of reed in the Suez canal area (where they or the Egyptians could have just gone around them) or at a place south of Goshen along the western shore of the Gulf of Suez.

In Chapter 11:37 it says that they traveled from Raamses in the Egyptian Delta to Succoth (believed to be east of Raamses but still in Egypt. In Exodus 13:17 it says that they came to a pass and the LORD would not let them go north through Philistia as it was near. So it makes me wonder if there was some type of pass over the mountainous terrain between Egypt and Philistia. The Bible says that this route was the shorter route. But YHWH was taking the Israelites by a circuituous route for a reason. Ex. 13:18 says that YHWH instead lead them around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. journeying from Succoth to Etham. In Etham they camped at the edge of the wilderness. Perhaps they camped along the shoreline were there was a sandy route between the sea and the wilderness going north and south.

So God knew what Pharaoh was going to think ahead of time. Knowing this already, He lead the Israelites to a dead end.

All the first born males are God's because He purchased them with the lives of all the first born Egyptian males . Exodus Ch 13 V 11-15 .
  • GiGi on Exodus 13 - 2 years ago
    .....continued

The text says that God did not lead them via the short route, through Philistia. This most likely for several reasons:

    1) YHWH wanted to develop the relationship between Himself and the Israelites.

    2) YHWH wanted to grow the faith and commitment of the Israelites to YHWH.

    3) YHWH wanted to strengthen these people as a unit, not as individual tribes, so that they will fight as one people

    4) YHWH wanted to give them His Law so that they will know how their society is to live together and among the other nations.

    5) YHWH wanted to test them in various circumstances so that they will learn to depend on Him.

    6) YHWH wanted the Israelites to experience the many astounding miraculous workings for YHWH.

    7) YHWH wanted the people to be away from Egypt and alone with God long enough for them to not want to return to Egypt.

    8) YHWH wanted the people to learn about the lands outside of both Egypt and Canaan before they entered the Promised land.

    9) YHWH wanted to train the people for battle by making them physically stronger than the lushness of Egypt had softened them .

    10) YHWH wanted the Israelites to be purged of the idolatry of Egypt and commit to YHWH now and when they enter Canaan with all of its idolatry.

Moses taught the people how to move in orderly ranks. This is important when leading such a large multitude of people safely. No one was to run ahead, get sidetracked on another way, or lag behind and become separated from the group. They went in the direction of the Red Sea, east into the wilderness, from Succoth to Etham. YHWH led them by a pillar of clouds by day and fire by night. His presence was within the cloud and the fire and He was always with them. He led them. He was in charge. he directed the way. He stopped them when He wanted them to stop, and began moving when He wanted them to go from where they stopped. The Israelites were to submit to God and subject themselves to His directions, not by their own reasoning or concensus. God ruled.
  • GiGi on Exodus 13 - 2 years ago
    ... continued

Moses says that they are to remind themselves of YHWH's deliverance in this month every year when they enter the land promised to Abrahan, Isaac, and Jacob. This was now the land of the Canaanites, the descendants of Ham, not of Shem, who was most blessed by Noah. The many peoples they will encounter in this land are all Canaanites, not people of God's promise.

Moses describes the land of Canaan as flowing with milk and honey. It was fertile, pleasant, and suitable for living. At our time in history, most of the middle east is desert. But in this time in history, it apparently was less so. It is said to have forests, wilderness, pasturelands, and more flow from its waterways. Wells were dug all over the area, so the water table must have been near the surface, easily accessed. History does not document how the climate changed in this portion if the world or when, but maybe, with study, something can be found out concerning this. Every year at this time, in the spring (mid-March to mid April) the were to keep the service to God of the Unleavened Bread it was a 7 day feast. Bread was purged from the home and only unleavened bread was to be eaten. Then on the 7th day there would be a feast to celebrate the last night the Israelites were in Egypt. They were to feast as a memorial to the last meal they ate in anticipation of the imminent deliverance that night from the LORD.

Moses instructs the parents to teach their sons (perhaps all children, but maybe the firstborn) the importance of this feast and the reason for it. It seems that this is when the practice of phylacteries were begun. The fontlets were a headband of remembrance of the Law and on the hands were another item or writing to remind them of God's deliverance and the importance of following Him in all things. Moses introduces the setting apart of the firstborn and thy why of it.

How important it is for us to actively teach our own children about the God. I should have done better at this.
  • GiGi on Exodus 13 - 2 years ago
Yeah! YHWH brought the Isrealites out of Egypt, just as He had proclaimed to Abraham hundreds of years before. This chapter opens with YHWH speaking to Moses about the necessity of consecrating the firstborn son of man/beast among them. As the first born of the Egyptians were killed by the final plague, the firstborn of Israel were spared death. So, now that the Israelites were taken out of Egypt by YHWH and the firs born spared, now in the wilderness, the firstborn was to be separated out to the Lord as a reminder of this mighty act of God. Whenever a woman/beast gives birth for the first time, it should be a reminder of how God spared the first born in Egypt. Vs. 2 says that the firstborn "are Mine" even though the whole people of Israel are His people, but apparently the firstborn would be especially set apart for God. Perhaps this is a test to the Israelites to see if they would even be willing to set apart their first child (male) to God and do whatever He says to do with him, just like Abraham did with Isaac.

Next, Moses speaks to the people, starting out by saying "Remember this day". The day was the last 24 hours in which YHWH had spared the firstborn and they had left Egypt in haste by the strength of God's hand. They are to remember that it was God who did this. Not Moses, not Aaron, not Pharaoh, not their leaders, but God brought them out in a great deliverance that should not forget about over time. It is important to remember what God has done for us.

Next Moses mentions the month, Abib, which later became Nisan. It was spring. The heads of the grain were green, new, not mature. The nation of Israel at this time was like Abib, spiritual infants, newly budded, not yet mature or ready. The Israelites have just begun this relationship with YHWH. They had not known Him long. They were just babies in their faith in Him. At this time of year, remember your deliverance from Egypt. Never forget. Never lapse in your memory. Remember.

    2 THINGS:-

    1. Believing without repentance in the Gospel of John

    2. Repentance can be a bad thing - Exodus

    GOSPEL OF JOHN

The gospel of John, as it ends tells the reader that he is writing the book for people to get saved/ believe. He says in John 20:30-31 ---> And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But THESE ARE WRITTEN, THAT YE MIGHT BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, AND THAT BELIEVING YE MIGHT HAVE LIFE THROUGH HIS NAME. It's the ONLY book that brings people to salvation, because most books in the NT are written to the church. MOST. But Gospel of John is written so that people might believe..

    YET,

Nowhere in the whole gospel of John do you encounter the word "repent" . If its a book that claims to get people saved, you should at least get word repent even one time but its not there, but guess what! the word "believe" appears in the gospel of John 46 times(if my counting is correct). Look at some verses:-

John 1:7 - The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

John 1:12 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 6:69 - And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

John 11:27 - She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

    REPENTANCE IN EXODUS

Exodus 13:17 - And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

Here repentance is a bad thing because they would "turn" back to Egypt when they see war..
  • Chris - In Reply on Nehemiah 10 - 3 years ago
Chuck, from what you've written, I believe you have misunderstood this passage in Nehemiah. This was a commitment that Israel made before the Lord. It began when Ezra rehearsed the Words of God before the people (Nehemiah chapter 8) & the people repented because they had strayed so far from God. (9:1,2).

So they separated themselves from the heathen (10:28), & entered into a unified oath (a curse: which they pronounced upon themselves if they failed to do according to their oath). And part of that oath was that they would not intermarry (v 30), they would honour the Sabbath Day (v 31), they would contribute to the various offerings (vv 32,33), to bring in the firstfruits (the first of their crop, their sons, their animals as an offering to the Lord (vv 34-37); but bear in mind that their sons were NOT sacrificed (see Exodus 13:2, where the sons were sanctified (separated) as consecrated to the Lord)).

Israel had strayed very far from the Lord, so this renewed vow & commitment as a result of the reading of the Law by Ezra & the rehearsal of Israel's history by the Levites (chapter 9), was a turning point in their history, at least for some time.

Also once you get married you should try to stay that way. Divorce can be only done if one of you commits adultery.

Matthew 19:9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery
  • Cyrylkrotev - In Reply on Exodus 13 - 3 years ago
I dont see anything wrong with kissing, hugging, cuddling if you're trying to get married. The bible doesn't say they are wrong ( Romans 14 Paul also states that all things are premissable for us yet not helpful, in the proper context, which is things that are not stated as sins) Sex before marriage is fornication which is the sin.

The bible doesn't say that you gotta have papers done to get married, unless its 100% mandatory in your country. Its one man one woman that just decide to get married or become "one flesh" as Jesus said. Adam didnt have to sign papers as far as i know or other people in the bible, nor a ceremony.

If its that hard just pray to God that he allows you to get married as fast as he wills. If you need to you can just get married by law and after a while have a ceremony. It can be done in a few hours i think.

    Hope this helps.

Romans 10:9-10 is how you can get saved.

  • Chris - In Reply on Exodus 13 - 3 years ago
To learn that answer, one would need to go back a fair bit - back to Genesis chapter 37. You probably know the story, or can read about it from there, but in a nutshell, Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers to the Midianites who took Joseph into Egypt. When in Egypt, these slave traders sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer to Pharaoh. Joseph served him faithfully except when Mrs. Potiphar accused Joseph of attempted rape & so Joseph also became a prisoner.

In time, Joseph, being blessed by God was called to interpret the Pharaoh's dream which resulted in Joseph being honoured with a high position & even given an Egyptian wife. Joseph was still a young man at 30 yrs of age when there was a general famine throughout, but Joseph had the wisdom to store up grain for such an occasion so even other countries round about came to him to buy grain. With that, Jacob, Joseph's father, sent his sons (Joseph's brothers) also to Egypt to buy food, & they didn't realize who they would have to deal with: their brother whom they sold into slavery. But Joseph forgave them their sin & even Pharaoh invited Joseph's family to move over to Egypt & settle there. However, Jacob was old & died & in time, Joseph himself died at 110 yrs of age & was buried in Egypt.

So Egypt became the home for Israel (= Jacob), but the old Pharaoh also died & a new Pharaoh came into power, "a new king that knew not Joseph" ( Exodus 1:8) & instead of continuing to enjoy freedom & prosperity in Egypt, all the children of Israel became slaves to the Egyptians & even harder bondage. But God still had a plan to free Israel from bondage, so Moses comes onto the scene, even avoiding death as a baby by God's providence. And you know the rest of the story.

How did Israelites become slave in Egypt?
  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 10 - 3 years ago
Paul was referring back to the old days when the children of Israel had left the bondage that they were in at Egypt, and were being led of God from Egypt towards the Promised Land, Canaan. God ministered to them in many ways, including supplying food & water as well. However, God used a (very large) cloud to guide Moses & the people by day & a pillar of fire by night: Exodus 13:21,22.

And when Israel stopped to rest & set up camp, that cloud from God went behind them & near the pursuing Egyptians, so that Israel had light, while this great cloud covered the sun & gave darkness to the pursuing Egyptians, so that they too had to stop since they couldn't see where they were going: Exodus 14:19,20. In this way, God maintained a separation between Israel & her enemies, thus keeping her safe.

So the point that Paul was making here, was that how wonderfully God had taken care of His people during those difficult days (40 years) of trekking through the desert because of their murmuring & disobedience to God, so the Corinthians also should use that event as an example for their own lives. God had dealt severely with Israel for their sins & so we too should be careful in our Christian walk & live carefully before God, lest He discipline us according to our waywardness & sins. The Corinthian Christians were living amongst an idolatrous people & were being tempted to live by their standards (even as it is today with us), but Paul's warning to them was to beware of living like this & learn from the serious example that the Israelites in their wanderings, had set for them.
