Discuss Amos 2

    Hi Cheryl,

This is a tough scripture, the sons of God and the daughters of men. Some consider the sons of God to be the line of Seth and the daughters of men the line of Cain. Then if we throw in what Jesus said in Matt. 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven, wow.

There is no need for angels in heaven to marry, they are immortal, and no need to reproduce as we will be after the resurrection in the kingdom on the new earth. Angels are called sons of God in Hebrew b'nai Elohim in Job 1:6 Job 2:1 Job 38:7.

Through scripture angels take on human form, they eat and drink Gen. 18:7-8 Gen. 19:3 and physically wrestle with man, Gen. 32:24. If they eat and drink would that mean they have all the organs of man on earth? Scripture tells us there are devils/demons and fallen angels on earth along with Satan but there is another group of angels. These angels are different, they are locked in chains of darkness in the bottomless pit until judgment. 2 Peter 2:4-7 Jude 1:6-7. We see in Rev. 9:11 this pit has a king, and this is where Satan will be locked up for 1000 years.

They left their first estate, heaven and in 2 Peter and Jude it says making them an example, (going after strange flesh), they corrupted God's creation Gen. 6:5-7. Even though there are fallen angels roaming the earth this set of angels God made an example to the others they will be locked in chains of darkness until judgment. We see the devils in Mark 5:9-10 were in fear Jesus might cast them down to the bottomless pit.

We see that this happened again after the flood, Gen. 6:4 "and also after." The description in scripture is clear these are not just tall people. 2 Samuel 21:16 Joshua 12:4 Numbers 13:33 Deuteronomy 2:19-21 Deuteronomy 20:17 Amos 2:9. This is just a small amount of information but may it will help in your study.

    God bless,

Job 30:19, no, I believe it's referring to Job 2:7,8,

    Amos 2:1, 2Kings 23:16,20, 2Chronicles 34:1-6 as prophecied in 1Kings 13:12, & Ezekiel 24:9-14,

The other references comparable are 1Samuel 31:12,13, 2Samuel 21:12,13,14, they weren't completely consumed as described in Amos 2:1,

    Hopefully this is helpful

Remember to pray for wisdom: James 1:5, 2Timothy 2:15

1Samuel 31:11-13 note 1Samuel 31:9-11, 2Samuel 2:5-6, 2Samuel 2:4-7, there is no contradiction here notice the difference Amos 2:1, 2Samuel 21:12, 'stolen' translated word 'ganab' meaning= to theive, take away, get by stealth, ) they took, 1Samuel 31:12, I think it is to emphasise cover of darkness 1Samuel 31:12, dangerous 'valiant men" stole 2Samuel 21:12 because it was in the possession of they enemy as spoils of war. 1Samuel 31:7-10, Ecclesiastes 3:1-3,

1Kings 15:5, 1Samuel 24:21-22, 1Samuel 18:19, 1Samuel 21, = Matthew 12:3-12, Jesus words. 2Samuel 21, notice David honored his oath 2Samuel 21:17, No contradiction, notice : 1Samuel 18:21, 1Samuel 19:17 Saul, his own daughter, same daughter Saul didn't value her life? Adultery was also punishable by death, stoning! You pointed out Saul gave David's wife same woman to another blatantly adultery, I was more surprised by David's mercy by restoring her position, sparing her life from death penalty & also sparing the lovers life. 2Samuel 3:14-16,

Remember Saul's 1st daughter? She was promised to David, before the people, again this too could be considered adultery, treacherous, etc. 1Samuel 17:25-27, 1Samuel 18:17-19,25,

1Samuel 17:25-54, weird but again we see 'spoils of war' also, 1Thessalonians 4:8,

    2Samuel 24:1, GOD moved him, Job 12:16, 2Samuel 2:16, 2Samuel 2, why wasn't she there, rejoicing in the LORD? 2Samuel 2:19,

Again pray for wisdom, hopefully helpful

    Hey Lee1960,

You are right, this is hard to understand so we need not be dogmatic but humble. The sons of God are in the OT only 5 times Gen. 6:2, 5 Job 1:6 Job 2:6 Job 38:7, and Daniel 3:25. The times in Job and Daniel are clearly angelic beings, so how do we take the meaning in Gen. 6. It says, "when the sons of God saw daughters of men", The Hebrew word for men here is h-'-m/adam meaning mankind. So, is this distinguishing a difference in the sons of adam/men?

There are words that we may overlook, "and also after that". We see giants/Nephilim after the flood. 2 Sam. 21:16 Joshua 12:4 Num. 13:33 Deut. 2:19-21 Deut. 20:17 Amos 2:9 and more. Are there any NT scriptures that speak to this?

2 Peter 2:4-6 and Jude 1:6-7 both are talking about angels who sinned and "which kept not their first estate but left their own habitation", the Greek word is used only two times translated habitation is oiktrion, the other place was in 2 Cor 5:2 the word house. Peter and Jude both compare what these angels did the same as in Sodom and Gomorrah, strange flesh.

There are fallen angels along with Satan who are active on the earth today and still have access to heaven, but these angels did something even worse because God made an example of them and locked them in chains of darkness in the bottomless pit, until judgment. I do not know of any man in the OT who was ever called or referred to as son of God, I may have overlooked it, but my understanding is Nephilim came from these angels that God locked up.

    God bless,

What the Bible says about Burning Bones of King of Edom ( From Forerunner Commentary ) Amos 2:1-3 Moab's major transgression was the result of a long-burning feud between Moab and Edom. Out of spite and anger, the Moabites dug up the bones of a long-dead Edomite king and threw them into a fire.

This is another example of taking advantage of someone who is weak and defenseless. Can a corpse fight back? The principle here is that every sin has a boomerang. God noticed the sin, burning the bones of the king of Edom, and promised to avenge it ( Deuteronomy 32:35).

    Hey Mark,

The times of Noah were horrendous as in Genesis 6:11. As you said sons of God are used 5 times in OT Genesis 6 Job 1 Job 2 and Job 38 all referring to angels. It is used 6 times in the NT John 1 Romans 8 Philippians 2 and 1 John 3, my understanding is referring to those who have accepted and have faith in Jesus.

There are many opinions on fallen angels, devils/demons. There are evil beings on this earth today, we see in Daniel battles that may be going on that we are not aware of, Daniel 10. There is a set of angels that were different and for what they did, God locked them in chains of darkness until the judgment 2 Peter 2:4 Jude 1:6, and others can still roam the earth.

In verses 6:4 daughters of men having children, they became mighty men of old. The Hebrew word for old is m-'-w-lm, meaning defined as long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, or world. It was translated everlasting 110 times, forever 136 times.

Giants we see before and after the flood as said in Genesis 6:4 "and also after that". The word giant is Nephilim and also the Rephaim (or Rephaites, the terrible ones), You can find them throughout the OT and their descriptions are not just a tall big man, Numbers 13:33 Amos 2:9 and more.

When God created everything the seed is after his kind, a dog will have a dog, a bear will have a bear, and so on, a man and woman may have a tall big man but it will not be a giant. Angels can on earth have a body that can eat, and drink, Genesis 18, fiscally wrestle Genesis 32 and we are told how we should entertain strangers because they may be an angel, Hebrews 13.

Just a few things you may look at. If an angel left his first estate and came down to earth could he mate? Was that why God locked them in darkness and other bad angels and Satan can still roam the earth? After the flood, there were only 8 where did these giants come from?

    Interesting subject,

    God bless,

Dear "ButtersxChan". Amos 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Acts 2:17-21 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

The only thing you can do dear friend is trust in Jesus Christ. He is the same today as before. He will never leave you or let you go. His blood at Calvary made us clean once and for all. And rest in the Lord that He teaches you so that you will understand. No one puts a small child in the middle of the road and expects it to fend for itself.

Therefore when you wake up sweaty and paralyzed by dreams so horrible. Thank Jesus Christ for the dreams. Know that Jesus' blood will wash them away for you. He Is and knows of everything. Forgive and confess your sins to some Christians you trust. There may be revealed or hidden things that the Lord knows about, let Him guide you beloved. Love u in Christ

    Waline A Anthony,

In Genesis 6:4 it talks about the giants, "in those days; and also, after that", We see in those days and also after that we have giants (Nephilim). We see when Israel went into the promised land God gave them a command Deuteronomy 20:16-18. The word giant is Nephilim, which is also in Numbers 13:33, giants after the flood.

The question this raises is, who are the Nephilim and how did they survive the flood? Were these more fallen angels that created more giants? If the Nephilim were indeed half-human/half-angelic then it may explain the many ancient religious views after Babel with demi-gods (half man half god), but we do not find it clearly in scripture.

Also, in the Old Testament, there is the Rephaim (or Rephaites), and the context describes them as giants. The name of these people means "terrible ones" also, refers to departed spirits whose dwelling place was the abyss.

Here are some scriptures that may help your study, Joshua 12:4 2 Samuel 21:16 Also read Joshua 13, 15, 17, 18, 2 Samuel 21 and 1 Chronicles 20.

We do find giants of considerable size. Is there any scripture that tells us where these giants came from? There were not just one or two, but there were many. The descriptions of these giants appear much larger than 8-9 feet tall, a small number of people today.

    Numbers 13:33 Deuteronomy 2:19-21 Deuteronomy 20:17 Amos 2:9

Many struggles with there being giants but all over the world history records similarities of myths of giants, were they real? Whatever the case, there is the biblical evidence, plus written accounts outside of the Bible, that giants did exist.

Are the Nephilim and Rephaim the offspring of angels and human women that became demons and evil spirits after the flood that we see in the Bible? In the Bible there are angels which kept not their first estate, but left their habitation and are locked in chains of darkness until judgment.

Study for your conscience may this help, God bless.

There are two primary views on the identity of the sons of God and daughters of men. They were godly descendants of Seth intermarrying with wicked descendants of Cain. The major support for this interpretation is Genesis chapter 4 describes the ungodly generations of Cain, and 5 is the godly Seth line and the righteous line of Seth.

Cain and Seth are both descendants of Adam and Eve so if the descendants of Cain's daughters were fair, so the daughters of Seth would also be fair so, godly vs ungodly would have to be the difference. Nowhere in scripture are the descendants of Seth called "the sons of God", but more as an adoption, "shall be my son" as Solomon and us today, who receive Jesus and are led by the Spirit of God are the sons/ daughters of God. ( 1 Chronicles 17:13) ( 2 Corinthians 6:18)

The other view is angels who left their first estate and mated with women. Angels are called sons of God in Job, ( Job 1:6) ( Job 2:1) ( Job 38:7). Some say angels can not mate because of what Jesus said in ( Matthew 22:29-30). But all through scripture angels take on human form, they eat and drink and if they left their first estate it is possible. Scripture does not give a lot about this; we have 1656 years from Adam to the flood in only 7 chapters of Genesis.

Scripture tells us there are devils, demons, and fallen angels but these angels are different they are locked in chains of darkness in the bottomless pit until judgment. ( 2 Peter 2:4) ( Jude 1: 6). The bottomless pit comes up in Revelation, another study.

Also mentioned are giants/ Nephilim/ Rephaim "in those days; and also after that", before and after the flood. Whether these were offspring of angels' scripture does not tell us. The description in scripture is clear these are not just tall people. ( 2 Samuel 21:16) ( Joshua 12:4) ( Numbers 13:33) ( Deuteronomy 20:17) ( Deuteronomy 2:19-21) ( Amos 2:9).

This is just a small amount of information, maybe it will get you started in your study.

Hello James. As far as I know, the Bible is silent on this topic, probably because it was not a practice of God's people, rather more in line to what the heathen would do. The references that come up are found in the Old Testament: 1 Samuel 31:11-13; Amos 2:1; Leviticus 20:14. However, Israel generally resorted to burial in a tomb, cave or ground: Genesis 23:19; 2 Chronicles 16:14; Matthew 27:57-60.

So, the Church is not given a specific direction on this, as ultimately, the body returns to dust "from whence it came" ( Ecclesiastes 12:7). It then becomes the decision by the family of the departed to have a burial or a cremation, depending on preference, costs, or availability. My choice would always be for a burial, in line with what was practised by Israel.

Jehovah God raised up the sons of Israel to be prophets and the young men to be Nazarites, but the people told the sons not to prophesy and gave wine to drink to the Nazarites, who were not to drink wine. This is what Paul warned would happen in the last days, they would not endure sound doctrine, but would heap up teachers with itching ears. Alcoholism has destroyed many from preaching the gospel, as Paul told the young minister Timothy, to drink a little wine, for his stomach. Today it is not done in moderation and many are being defiled. May God use us to say thus saith the Lord, as Amos did and say we must obey God and not men. When we do this we will be able to preach the gospel in season when it is wanted and out of season when it is not desired. May God give us the grace to heed the call of the souls of men and women who need Jesus the only Mediator between God and man.

    Ungodly Influences

In this chapter we see the Moabites influencing Israel to worship Baal even though they new God's Word concerning this issue. In making application we see the importance of not yoking or being influenced by the ungodly but to simply trust the Word of God. How about you? Do you see the how the ungodly try to influence the redeemed through their actions? Let us learn from our text today and the life Amos to see that the wicked will attempt to influence those who serve the Lord so let us hold fast to the Word of God so we will receive the blessings of God.
