Discuss 2 Samuel 18

Hi Dara Susan. In 2 Samuel 18:21-33, the 'Cushi' mentioned there was a messenger of Joab (David's military commander). In Hebrew, this name appears 'as one who is descended from Cush, hence 'Cushi'). And you can see the name Cush in Genesis 10:6-8 (a son of Ham, the son of Noah). So in the 2 Samuel reference, Joab calls to the Cushi, or the Cush-ite, without stating his name. Maybe, because of his origins & his lower position before Joab, first names weren't used, as was done for Ahimaaz who also wanted to take the message of Absalom's death to David. So the meaning of 'Cush' is unknown, maybe because it was an area of the Nile delta in Egypt.

That's possible Mark, though I believe that 2 Samuel 18:7,8 refers more to the 'wooded areas' or countryside. As the battle was in "the wood of Ephraim" (v6) & "scattered over the face of the country" (v8), it seems more likely that factors such as hunger, thirst, exhaustion, wild beasts, etc. may have taken their toll on the men, more so than the sword or arrow.
  • Mark on 2 Samuel 18 - 1 year ago
Could 'the wood devoured more people that day than the sword' also include those killed by arrows (made of wood)? We know that archery was used by king David...

This chapter shows the fulfilment of the word of God that vengeance is His. David did not want His son to be killed but the wrath of God was on him as he rose against his father and disobeyed the Lord. it is also a lesson for us to take the word of God as it is, an never to choose fame and conspire against the anointed as God always fights their battles.

2 Samuel 18:9 Proves what people would ignore an even hide in most cases, the children of Israel an the Royal House of Judah are indeed a Negro people today the same exact people to a T. So called Black woman are under the curses of Isaiah chapter 3 an this here is without a shadow of a doubt a large thick Afro. There's no way it's not. Only our hair is thick to this extent that when grew long enough it can very much get caught up in branches. Unbelievable. This is beautiful!

Did you notice? David feared GOD & would not lay his hand on GOD's anointted & felt remorseful for cutting Saul's garment.

    1 Samuel 24:4,5,6 , 1 Samuel 24:10,

Saul also ripped Samuel's garment 1 Samuel 15:27 however 1 Samuel 15:28-29. Even after remorseful repentance 1 Samuel 15:29,30,35

Do think the significance of the clothing was a factor? 1 Samuel 2:19, His mother's sacrifice 1 Samuel 1:28

Saul pursued David to kill him: 1 Samuel 19:1,10,11,15,

& Saul ordered the prophets of GOD killed, possibly unarmed, their families, livestock & nursing babies included.; 1 Samuel 22:17,18,19 Same Saul that left the enemy King & livestock alive in disobedience to GOD's orders. 1 Samuel 15:1,2,3,8,9,

    Psalms 105:15

    David's mercy 2 Samuel 9:3-7,

    David's sin & judgement: 2 Samuel 12:7,9,11,12,14,18, 2 Samuel 13:1,6,7,8,12,13,14,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,28,29,30,31,32, after years 2 Samuel 14:25,30,31,32, 2 Samuel 15:6,10,12,13,14,16,23,30,31, 2 Samuel 16:3,5,6,7,8,11,13,22, 2 Samuel 17:21,23,29, 2 Samuel 18:5,7,9,10,12,14,15,17,20,27,32,33, 2 Samuel 19:1-4, "the sword did not depart from his house" etc. There were more scriptures about his consequences _.

Queen Vashti, consequence Ester 1:19, Ester 2:4

    Saul then 1 Samuel 28:3,7,18,19

David has Psalms of remorseful repentance, gives glory to GOD ALMIGHTY, shows mercy & humility at times. With Saul he shows remorse but didn't read much of repentance, etc.

However the Bible says: 1 Colossians 1:20,

    Job 12:16

Hopefully these are helpful in your study.

    DARTS

    2 Samuel 18:14

Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

    2 Chronicles 32:5

Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.

    Job 41:29

Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.

    Ephesians 6:16

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

NOTE: the word Corona is not in the Bible. You can Google, but

If you are referring to the Sun or the corona virus, there are 3 scriptures that DO name China and the Middle East Palestinian nations as places where plagues have come from:

3 PLAGUES IN THE BIBLE FROM ASIA & MIDEAST

    Revelation 9:14-18

    Matthew 24:14

    Isaiah 49:12

China gave us Swine FLU. SARS virus, and Corona virus; which has killed before. I got a feeling that corona virus isn't done killing yet.

So sorry Vanessa that you've suffered so.
  • Vanessa on 2 Samuel 18 - 4 years ago
It's shows not to rebel against your parents. Absalom was filled with wicked ways. David mourned because his son not only rebelled against his parent, but God as well, he wasn't yet saved, he denied God. David wanted him alive there would still be hope for him to repent and turn to God. It is sad to watch children deny God. trust me I know, the guilt it brings to a parent GB

Sometimes it don't tell what happened to this person or that person. exp: What happened to Joseph the husband of Mary, Jesus's Mother. It never said that he died or if he's still alive.
  • Stephen Botts on 2 Samuel 18 - 6 years ago
David did not weep over the baby he lost due to his sin concerning Uriah the Hittite. (Even after fasting for a week). However, he wailed over Absalom. Why? Because he knew that little baby was with the Lord Jesus ( 2 Samuel 12:23 ) and he would see him again. And he also knew that Absalom was not a true believer in God. David affirms his love by saying, "would God I had died for thee".

"And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!" David was a good man with normal feelings of love for his son, that didn't change because his son was evil; but his heart was broken inconsolable when he lost his son. Love will be hurt.

Ren; that's a good question. Is it like in Matthew 1, where there are three generations omitted from the record of Jesus' genealogy? Because Jehoshaphat made affinity with Ahab by joining their children in marriage, the result was that apostasy, rebellion and wickedness threatened to put out entirely the Light of the house of David, through whom Christ was to come. Absalom's rebellion omitted him.

2samuel 14 vs 27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance. It just said Absalom had children so what happen to them?
  • A disciple on 2 Samuel 18 - 6 years ago
Absalom had no children. His tragic and short life is like so many evil children of godly parents; they have no idea, that all their intense selfishness and heathen ways, causes so much unbearable grief to those who love them; and then they are taken away by a catastrophe! No monument that makes for himself, can make his life's character and doings any better in God's view in the day of judgment.
  • Stephen on 2 Samuel 18 - 6 years ago
The pillar was placed before Absalom had children, or perhaps the children died in youth. They are not mentioned in the genealogies.
  • Mutt on 2 Samuel 18 - 7 years ago
Dewey J, perhaps all of Absalom's sonnes were dead by that time?
  • Victor on 2 Samuel 18 - 7 years ago
The wood devoured more suggests divine intervention in the battle. God would help us to fight our battles if we invite Him in total submission.
  • Dewey J on 2 Samuel 18 - 8 years ago
Brenda, my sentiment is precisely. The Scriptures said he Absalom had three sons and one daughter who he named after his sister Tamar. It's a mystery for him to say such a thing. Glory be to God in the highest through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ amen!

God is so serious about His children to the extent that He kills those that plan to kill us irrespective of blood relation because He said I will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you

Absalom had 3 sons and a daughter, so why did he say he had no son in remembrance of him? I understand David 's grief. We raise our children to the best of our ability and yet sometimes they still stray.
  • Tommy on 2 Samuel 18 - 11 years ago
Gods word is true; because of Davids sin, God allowed judgment on Davids family. God forgave him for his sin, but David still had to reap what he sowed. So let that be a lesson to us! For the wages of SIN is DEATH!!!
  • Timothy Wayne George on 2 Samuel 18:33 - 11 years ago
We wept with all the parents at Sandy Hook, as David wept for his son Absalom, and only God can comfort those who have lost loved ones in such a time as this. We must look to heaven from which our help comes from, for God is the God of all comfort, and He comforts those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from Him. God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, so that who ever believes in Him would not perish, but would have everlasting life. Thank God that death is not the end, because Jesus is the first fruits of those from the grave. One day we will see our loved ones again, and we will rejoice to see that day come.

@ Woah awesome perspective on Absalom's death. I would of never thought he built the pillar to glorify himself but that makes a lot of since.
  • Yarie on 2 Samuel 18:18 - 12 years ago
The real reason for building a pillar himself was because of prideful arrogant wickedness. He was in love with his beauty and wanted to immortalize himself through history. Which lead to his indignant death.
